I kinda did this with DS2. He refused to eat baby food for me, so I went that route. He got cereal & fresh garden purees from DC when there during the week. Just ate what we ate & still EBF otherwise at home.
I'll try some purees & cereal for his first times, just to be a gentle start, but give him really soft things while we eat. I really think BLW is why DS2 is so much more open to eating different foods & isn't as picky as my DS1.
I'm half way trying this. He's tried multiple pieces of fruit- apple, mango, grapes, kiwi, strawberry. I haven't tried any vegetables yet, mainly because I cook everything with spices and I don't know if it would bother him. But he mainly gets baby foods.

For the first few times, I gave DS2 canned green beans or other veggies since canned are so much softer. But only for the first few times & I felt he was good with the textures... didn't want to continue with canned for obv reasons

Combination of BLW and purees. So far she's had purees for dinner, but next week we're going to start sending purees to DC and giving her (steamed) pieces of things at home.

Combination. We started with purees and right now are on a rest because she got constipated. Next week will be more puree (sweet potato, carrot, green beans, prune) and probably steamed pieces of things when I am home for lunch with her... My mom is not too keen on BLW!

Good to see you around ladygray! BLW scares me bc I'm all like - omg, what if he chokes?? But I have been letting him gum on food while I hold it w a death grip.

We did BLW with DD1 and plan to do it again. It was so much easier than preparing her seperate food, feeding her seperate from us or during. We tried purees and she hated them (after I went through the trouble to make me own) so we switched to BLW and it was much better for us. It felt like she was more included in meals, she coked maybe twice but coughed it out on her own both times in like a second. Lots of gagging but you get used to it. They sort themselves out pretty quick.
"They" say BLW decreases chance of choking because they gets used to manipulating the different sizes and textures with their tongues right away instead of getting use to purees then having to learn a different way to eat.
We are doing BLW. He's tried avocado, strawberries, banana, sweet potato and carrots. We've also done some rice cereal and oatmeal, but stopped those because he had vomiting episodes afterwards last week. So we're holding off on grains for now.
We'll be doing BLW. We aren't planning to start until 6 months for real, but I've let him taste a few things so far. Grapes and strawberries. He's fascinated, but I think really it's just that the cold fruit feels good on his gums (he's working on tooth #2)

Were trying it at home, MIL is not willing to try... She has been grabbing at food and mad when everyone else eats for about a month now so we started back then. Started with steamed cauliflower and broccoli, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries. However she is a meat girl! She has had pork chops, steak, and chicken breast. We have done pears, peaches, break, bananas, pickles, tomatos (another favorite), apples, steamed peas, beans, cake, crackers, hard boiled eggs.
She still hasn't swallowed much but has gotten really good at chewing.
In the last week her new thing is sauces and condiments. dipping food in them.
Doesn't seem to mind any flavors or spices.
Were having fun!
Has had a few gag moments, but nothing traumatizing.
We were planning to do BLW, but started solids early due to reflux & feeding issues, so we're doing mostly purees for now and we'll start doing BLW at dinner time after I go back to work.
A big driver for us going to purees was that they weren't ingesting much (if any) of the food. They were mostly playing with it, which is fine, but I couldn't say that they didn't have a reaction to anything because they wore most of it. Now that they are interested in food and know that high chairs mean business, I think we can start adding BLW back into our routine.

We're waiting for some food readiness cues. If we don't see any before 6 months, we'll introduce then. We plan on a combo of BLW and purees, but we'll follow his lead and see what works for him.

Starting it in a couple weeks at 6 months! We did BLW with #2 and it was so much easier than doing purées, IMO. He ate everything for awhile, it was great, but typical toddler pickiness took over eventually. I like to tell him all the things he used to eat, ha.

We did avocado pieces last night. She tried so hard to get them in her mouth on her own. Her coordination just isn't there yet. So funny. She ate the pieces just as well as the mush. I am going to steam so many things this weekend.

diddles8586 wow, that is quite the variety. Are you having any issues with constipation? E can hardly have anything without getting stopped up. She's really about trying to steal basically everything we have but we have to take it really slow.

Planning on a combo. We're starting this weekend. Plan to give her pre loaded spoons of puree so she can try self feeding & slowly give more advanced textures/consistencies

LOL right?!? DD2 has only sucked on food and got constipated for a week.

Oh good, glad it's not just us. This is putting a serious damper on our solids game!!

Can I ask why everyone is letting their LO spoon feed themselves? They don't have the coordination for it right now and it causes them to get extremely messy. I waited (for these reasons) and DD wasn't behind in anyway as far as her ability to feed herself. I think for the most part, it enabled us to bypass the messy aspect of feeding an infant purées. Obviously, I'm only talking about purées. Other things they can lift to their mouth is different.
