Z has been having some slight constipation issues. Partly because he only eats mostly fruits and apples and bananas are his favorites. I want to get him drinking more water, but it's a struggle getting him to drink it. Any sippy cups have been failures and he pushes it away in a bottle and only takes a few small sips from an open cup.
Thankfully he loves prunes and they definitely get things moving. I've actually taken to feeding him a small amount at least every other day to help him stay regular.
Good suggestion about the watermelon. We have a mesh feeder and that would be perfect for that. He unfortunately will only do purees. I tried some banana pieces last night and you would have thought I was poisoning him.
I guess I'll just keep offering and I'll try different temp water to see if that makes a difference.

My kid won't drink from a sippy but enjoys banging it around at each meal (which is apparently the first step to them figuring it out from what I've read). That being said, we use prunes as you've mentioned or pears when he's a little backed up. The pears have a more mild effect.

If banging the cup around is the first step to figuring it out, then by now Dani should be able to sip hot tea from a fine china cup. So. Much. Banging.
I should have noted, I've not seen any hard stools, but there have been a few times when he looked like he looked like he was straining but only a small amount of firmer, yet still semi soft poop came out. I just am trying to prevent full on constipation.
Also, London I wonder this too. I've given both tap and filtered water to make sure he is getting fluoride. I've read to avoid too much bottled water(unless you have well water or another source that isn't safe for drinking) for kids. I should probably make some filtered and keep it outside the fridge since he doesn't seem to like it super cold.

The more solids they eat the firmer poop gets. I've definitely noticed F "pushing" more to get poop out.

Maybe I'm worrying over nothing? But I do want him to drink more water as we head into summer and him needing more water during hot days. Plus just a good habit to start.

Why should we avoid too mock bottled water? That's all I've been giving Oliver so far.. Should I be giving him something else?

Yes it's definitely good to start them on water. I need to be better about it. Just letting you know the more solid poop is likely pretty normal as his body adjusts to solid food.

I can't find the actual study, but he's a lick discussing the information. The worry is that only giving bottled water, a kid may not get enough fluoride and may see an increase in tooth decay in their baby teeth.
We do the silicone tip sippy cup. Both kids have taken to it after a month of trying when it has just clicked for them. Keep trying the water and most "p" fruits get things moving: pears, peaches, prunes. We also do a lot of blueberries and green stuff to keep it moving.
Oh yes - blueberries + spinach are a potent combination for this. I should've mentioned that earlier. Be prepared for the diaper if you give that combo...
It took M about two weeks to really get it. We just gave the same sippy at mealtimes and showed her how to use it and eventually it clicked.
If he likes fruit and veggies, try watermelon? Or cucumber cut up really small? It helps with hydration, I think.
Pears and broccoli always get the girls to poop.
Just a FYI - Arthur choked today on cucumber. It was cut really really small and he's an excellent chewer.
Still - it's very hard.
So scary! I wasn't sure about cucumbers as we haven't really tried them yet, so thanks for the heads up. I just know we give them to A a lot in the summer.
We don't have fluoride in our water & it tastes gross out of the tap. So my kids drink bottled water. Val got her prescription of fluoride drops at her 6 month check up which is standard around here, DS got his at the same age. He recently got a chewable one he takes before bed that he likes.
I keep reading mixed things about water. Some things say up to 2 oz is okay, and others say BM provides more than enough stressing the risks of water intoxication. How much are you giving your lo's and how often?

I'm really bad about offering water but now that the weather is getting warmer & we're spending more time outside I need to be better. When they're out in the sun and heat I think they probably need that water for extra hydration. I guess you could offer BM instead but they need to learn to drink water. I think I'm going to start offering a little with every meal and then carry some when we are going to be out in the heat.
With Val I fill up a straw cup with water. That's her water for the day. She never finishes it. She will get close on a really hot day if we are out at the park with DS. I offer the cup anytime she eats solids. The days she eats solids she tends to drink more water. We don't do solids everyday. She is pretty good at letting me know when she is done with it. She would rather BM over the water so when she refuses the cup I will nurse her.

This is exactly what I've been doing, offering a little with every meal. She's still BFing every 2.5-3 hours as well and by the look of her pee, I believe she is getting enough. I'm more worried about giving her too much.

I think you would have to be giving A LOT to give water intoxication. If you stick to around 6-8 oz/day that's probably sufficient & she probably won't even drink that much. I think the 2pz rule is for under 6 months. Once they're eating more solids I think more water is fine.

We've been offering a little water at meal time. Sometimes we put a little in a bottle and sometimes we spoon feed it to him. He still hasn't quite gotten the hang of the sippy.
