DS is 12 days old- how long should a nursing session last? And how often should he eat? The doctor said keep feeding on demand, but I feel like it's all I'm doing. By the time he is done with a session it's almost time for another one. He just fed for 35 minutes, but it took almost an hour with having to wake him up and letting him sit to realize he is still hungry.
I'm ok with it. I feel bad for DH. I will think he is done eating, hand him over to DH and within minutes he is crying again. Poor DH said to me today "what am I doing wrong?"
DS has been so hard to put down because of the spitting up, I've decided to go all out with the burping. I burped him 4 times during the early morning feed and it actually took an hour less than it usually takes for him to go back down. Could this be a latch issue? It doesn't sound like he's taking in so much air, but clearly he is.

It's so hard for dads in the early days! Your baby's feeding habits sound within the range of normal. My son was the same (still is now at 7 weeks... I just nursed him for the third time in 2 hours, and he's usually at the breast for 20-30 min per session). One thing that we did to get my DH more involved was introduce a bottle of pumped milk at around 3-4 weeks. This was dad gets in on the feeding action and I get more sleep - it was a win/win for us.

I feel like we went through that too! And my DS is only about a week older. I feed him now about 8-9 times a day for approx 20 minute sessions. When there are only 2 hour gaps, he nurses for about 15 minutes. With longer gaps between nursing he will nurse for about 25 minutes to 30 minutes. That's just us though, from what I read, babies could be efficient eaters and get done quick or inefficient and take awhile no matter what.
But also the whole nursing sessions usually do take on average like 45-60 minutes. especially at night, having to wake him, feed him and change him etc. I think it continually gets a little quicker each time for us though.
Kevinmac i was wondering the same thing. DS has been feeding pretty much non stop today. But we just got the hang of breastfeeding today so I'm super happy with him staying attached to me 24 hours a day for now. I can nap tomorrow.

MIL was just here to pick up the toddler for a fun morning out. She was holding baby when he started going ballistic. The following convo ensued:
MIL: is it time for him to eat? Me: always MIL: what?
H explains that he clusterfeeds in the morning and evening, so even though he just finished eating for 30 min, 30 min ago, he wants more now. And he sometimes gives me a break in the afternoon and MOTN, sometimes being a key word.
MIL: oh Bells (sympathetically)! Is this like a short term thing? Me and H: ??
Like I have no idea. This is what he does. It's been 4 weeks now, so. I'm glad she understands what his demanding cry is like and how hard it can be. But when will it end questions are not helpful. She was also astonished that he wouldn't take a paci, like we hadn't really given it a shot. Side eye.
I haven't chimed in here in a while. I always read threads especially at night but can't bring myself to have the energy to respond. I've been nursing in the bed and I just feel like I'm too tired and maybe I should get up and move around to wake myself up. I always fall asleep nursing. Well usually I'm up when she's nursing but have to hold her for a bit yo make sure she's sound asleep and then I fall asleep for an hour or so in the process. I feel confident she's really safe and I'm not sound asleep but I need to stop doing it because when I do finally get Her back in the bassinet she wakes up within the hour and wants to eat again.
Also DD1 never burped like ever. This baby burps a lot and it causes so many nighttime sleeping issues. It's always delayed. I try right away and then give up and put her to bed and the grunting and squirming starts and then finally the burp comes.
As far as nursing times. She's a 1 boob at a time kid and eats every 2 hours a lot of times more often but only eats 10-15 min per time.

The falling asleep after nursing happens to me all the time. DS needs to be pretty sound asleep to be put down, and after eating it seems to take forever.
