When is everyone doing first bottle? We did it at 2 weeks with DS and never had any issues but I was planning to wait until 3-4 weeks this time since we've had some latch issues. However, now my supply is running low and I may want to up my pumping game to up my supply, so I may do one earlier.
I think DD1 was around 5 or 6 weeks. I was in my best friend's wedding and had to be away from her for a lot of the day. We did a bottle at home about a week before the wedding with no issue to make sure she would be fine. We never had issues switching back and forth though if I was around I usually nursed. I went back to work when she was 4 months and that's when bottles became regular and she was fine.

I've been planning on 3 weeks, which is Monday! I haven't pumped anything yet though. I just pulled out my pump this evening and washed the parts. I may try tomorrow. I still have no idea what kind of volume I'll produce though. I need to introduce a bottle soon for my sanity... Every 1-2hr feeds overnight is slowly killing me.
Well, he had a bottle of formula at 2 hours old so my game plan was thrown out the window before it even started. Since then, we've had to continue supplementing (using what I've pumped) so he's been going between me and a bottle since birth and we haven't had any issues BFing at all, excluding his very brief and very random football hold preference. :-)
I finally get my pump at my OB appointment on Friday (!) so we will be introducing a bottle then. For those of that have done it or are doing it how exactly does pumping work with BFing. Is there amount of time I wait after feeding her before I pump? Is there a set time I should be doing on each side? Is there anything else I need to know that I'm sure I don't? I'm sure these are stupid questions, but I just realized I have no idea how it all works!

Pump after a feed.nusually best first thing in the morning because you'll have more milk. Do both sides. I usually do about 15 minutes.

If you are able pump after her first feed in the morning. That is when you will have the most milk.

This is what I did this morning (my first pumping!) I got 2.5 ounces from both sides after he took his fill also from both sides. I think this is decent? I think I need smaller size nipple shield though... I have tiny nipples I guess.

We did one bottle this am. My milk is coming in and I was hurting. Pumped one side to see what I'd get, see how he'd take it and so DH could feed him. I got about an ounce. When DD is back to daycare next week, I'll probably keep pumping once a day (early morning) so I can rest and let DH take over sometime.

Same- Bottle of formula within 48 hours of birth, now going back & forth between bottle & boob no issues with BFing.
With dd1 I started pumping at 4 weeks in prep of returning to work at 12 weeks. I block fed (nurse from one side at a time, switched every 4 hours. She never needed to be offered both breasts due to oversupply)
So in the morning session I would feed from one side and pump from the other. I always got more if I pumped at the same time she nursed, although I felt like I needed 8 hands!

So I have been feeding from one side, then pumping the other. Tried to do this at the same time today & it was an epic failure. Milk errywhere and a very pissed off baby. Any pro tips?
Andrea, I tried to do this too and it was a disaster! With time, you'll become an expert though! With DS I would pump in the car on the way to work all the time (sounds crazy but I promise you couldn't see what I Was doing from the car over). I became very efficient about which stoplights I needed to turn the pump on/off/get a bag out, etc.
I am trying to up my supply so I've been pumping after feeds just to stimulate even though I don't get much. I'm also still waking up every 3-4 hours in the night so that my supply doesn't drop for now. Once I introduce a bottle, we will probably do our bottle then so I can just pump while DS feeds the bottle, but we'll see. I had an oversupply with DS so I didn't have to figure any of this out.

I'm definitely looking into car pumping for when I go back to work in August. I'll hit you up for tips when it comes up! I know I will have all of the questions.

I have lots of tips, so let me know! In the meantime, I would buy the car adapter. I think it's like nine bucks on Amazon!
I'm wondering if I should be pushier with the feeding? M will eat from one side, then he often falls straight asleep rather than wanting more from the other side. When I went to the LC she did a before and after weight and he took 2 ounces from one side during the feeding. But it was long for him, maybe 20 minutes? If he is falling asleep should I just take my cue from him, or try to keep him more stimulated between breasts so he'll eat twice? They tend to be short feelings as well, maybe 10 minutes.
vivela, I'm torn between following his cues and trying to wake him up between. Can you try changing him in between to see if he'll continue eating after being woken up?
I tried that approach last week and learned that he was usually done after one side so I haven't worried as much about it and have followed his cues since then.

I was doing the changing between sides thing initially, but he doesn't burp easily and he spits up quite a bit. Feeding and then changing right away means he spits up all over the changing table and himself. What goes in and what goes out and where and when is challenging my organization skills

Ah, then yeah, I would let him sleep and know that his feedings will probably be more frequent until he's a little older and is able to stay awake longer. Him keeping it down is more important! Also, if he spits up a lot making him eat more could make the spit-up situation worse. Trust that he's eating until he's full and you know he'll let you know when he's hungry again.
So when baby only eats from one side, do you guys pump the other side or just wait until the next feeding when you've gone 6 hours without emptying that side?

I just wait and let her nurse from the other side the next time.

txmommy14, I pump from the other side twice a day- for the other feeds I just alternate.
Just made my first batch of lactation cookies- not shabby!!!
Ok. How do you get through the clusterfeeding with sore nipples. She's hanging out for 30 mins and it's killing me.
I was supplementing with pumped milk so I would give him a bottle when I couldn't bear it any more. Silver linings of the weight gain issues. The little cooling gel things were also helpful in those small breaks I got. Huge hugs!

I clench my teeth and hope it's over. But ice on the nipples and keep the nipple cream on them so they don't crack. I feel ya though. I am just waiting for mine to go numb.

Oh I feel your pain, really. Your LO is how old? My nipples started feeling much better about 2-3 days after my milk came in, but I had to grin and bear it until then. My baby was (and still is!) a big cluster feeder. I used Motherlove cream religiously and in copious quantities, and those gel breast pads.
Now I get the appeal of co sleeping- still not for us, but I get it.
I hear Ya. But c-section. So can't do that quite yet!
We are a month out from mine. The LC at the hospital wanted me to try it but I was stop worried about my incision. Tried it for the first time this week and it's awesome! I think it's going to be part of our routine in the morning with that 6-7 am feed; to get some comfy snuggles before starting out our day.
