Ok. How do you get through the clusterfeeding with sore nipples. She's hanging out for 30 mins and it's killing me.
Oh I feel your pain, really. Your LO is how old? My nipples started feeling much better about 2-3 days after my milk came in, but I had to grin and bear it until then. My baby was (and still is!) a big cluster feeder. I used Motherlove cream religiously and in copious quantities, and those gel breast pads.
About 48 hours. They gave me those soothie things and they are pretty good. Hopefully milk in soon!!! She finally slept a few hours and that even helped immensely.

Oh this is the worst time!! It will be so much better when your milk comes in. In the meantime slather on nipple cream like every 5 minutes. You're almost there!

Well she's now lost 10% of her weight we are in new territory. I'm so frustrated that my milk isn't in yet. And she may have a tie. We gave her some supplement today which in okay with but feeling so overwhelmed. I think we go home tomorrow but I honesty don't know if that's better or worse.
One thing that stood out to me is the hourly washing of pump parts. A suggestion, if I may? I did not wash after every use, and we had no ill effects. I would rinse the parts and just put them in the fridge (in a ziploc bag) until next use. Then wash once a day. I swear on this for my sanity. Maybe it can help make your ongoing duties fewer?
I did the same thing. Totally worth my sanity. And the Medela steam bags are amazing!
If you can swing it, buy an extra set of parts too. I bought replacement parts for my original pump and insurance covered a new pump for this pregnancy as well. So now I've got three sets of parts. Makes it way easier then having to always worry about needing to keep parts clean.

Forgive me for asking what are probably some pretty obvious questions I have been reading up on pumping because I want to have LO start with the occasional bottle in a few weeks. My LC says it is a good idea to start around 3-4 to lessen the chances of LO refusing bottles later. Right now I think I have a good supply - LO seems to be satisfied and gaining and I'm not dealing with a lot of pain or engorgement. Does pumping once a day for now and slowly building a freezer stash sound reasonable? When DH starts replacing a feeding from me with a bottle I'll pump then as well. Does that sound right? There is all this conflicting info online and I don't want to screw up my supply by pumping too much or not enough.

vivela that's pretty much what we have been doing. I started pumping once a day this week (3 weeks). DH is giving one bottle a day and I pump while he gives the bottle, sometimes a second time first thing in the morning. I'm getting about 3oz when I pump, which is just about the volume he'll take out of the bottle. It's working well!

Yes that makes sense. Try and pump in the morning after your first nursing session because that's when you have the most milk.
Stringy, I don't have much advice but wanted to throw a big hug your way. Is there an LC there to help you figure all this out?
I'll also say that because of our situation, I started pumping within 24 hours of him being born to help bring my milk in so that might be something to consider. It wasn't super comfortable to pump when I was only producing like 2 little drops of colostrom but it definitely helped us get things started. I hope that things get better for you soon!

Thanks. Yea I've been pumping today and we just gave her some donor milk tonight which calmed her right down. I was seriously fine with that until I saw my wife giving it to her and then broke into tears cuz it's supposed to be my turn to be able to feed and comfort a baby. But no. I desperately need sleep though.

Oh man, that's rough. Try to get some rest and remember that you're doing everything you can right now. You're doing a great job and this transitional period will hopefully pass quickly.
FWIW, I try to avoid being the one to give C a bottle because I want him to associate me with bfing and my H with bottle feeding. I don't know if it makes a difference really, but it certainly helped my sanity and my pp hormones to rationalize why I wasn't able to feed him in the beginning.
Hugs Stringy. I definitely full on cried in front of one of the nurses in the hospital over feeding. Waiting for my milk to come in felt endless while the numbers went up and up for LO's jaundice. What and when we feed our babies is pretty overwhelmingly emotional. The lactation consultant I've been seeing says she got certified after she had her own kids and experienced how difficult and stressful the process is. Don't forget you've carried and provided for this baby for months, and you and your wife both have a lot of amazing bonding moments ahead of you Sending good vibes your way!
I pump in the morning and before bed (so I am not too engorged if I get lucky and she sleeps longer than 3 hours). It's working well and I've been able to freeze a good amount so far. We did a bottle yesterday for the first time and will probably do another one late tonight before bed time.
I totally cried in the hospital both times, too. They HAVE to be used to it, so I wouldn't worry about it!
Stringy hugs!! There is nothing wrong with supplementing. You do what you have to do. Your milk will come in and she will gain her weight back. Continue pumping to help stimulate.
Does it matter what position you pump in? Like somewhat reclined is okay?
I don't think so but is the milk able to drop into the bottle in a reckoned position? If you're getting milk out and into the bottles, I doubt it matters.

I'm mostly just pumping for my own stimulation not for milk. I barely get anything. I guess my blood count is low and that delays milk coming in too. Luckily the hospital has donor milk on hand so she's gotten some of that in the meantime.
An article with breastfeeding tips showed up in my Facebook feed, probably due to all the googling I've been doing about it. I clicked on it, and I found this section heading juxtaposed with this ad hilarious... Especially since I've been calling M "shark baby" because of the way he will suddenly open his jaws and lunge at my nipple when I'm trying to position him correctly
Has anyone else noticed that depending on the bra they wear they can't feel the engorgement as much? I thought I was doing great and took my bra off and my boobs were rock hard?
I caved and had a lactation consultant come today.... DS was perfect for her. She said I'm doing everything right.
Except we're somehow back to painful or shallow latches all evening . I'm so frustrated and feeling defeated.
I could've written this exactly. DS has such a shallow latch except when we saw the LC. And none of their little tricks seem to help.
Did they check for lip and tongue ties? P has a tongue tie that is keeping her from pulling the nipple as deep as she should. We have an apt Monday to look closer.

Soooo. My right boob is engorged. Just my right one. Rock hard, warm and tender to touch, uncomfortable but not super painful.
My sister has suggested I pump it to relieve it. Will that not make it worse and create an over supply? Should I wait until our LC appointment on Monday?
I know I probably sound like a dummy but I am so clueless.

carolinaheart pumping just enough to get rid of the worst of the swelling won't hurt. Or you can take a warm shower and hand express until you're more comfy.
Do you think a my breast friend pillow would help with back pain? I think I must be positioning myself poorly, my back is so achy.
I bought one after using one at the lactation consultant. The boppy doesn't work as well because it slides away while he is eating. Brest friend is not a cure all. My back still hurts a bit where it wraps around, but it has me way less hunched over when I'm feeding him compared to a pillow or boppy.
