We need to buy a second seat for SO'S car. He will go get A's from daycare and drive him home which is 5 minutes away. Since it will be the only use we have for it, I don't want to pay another 350$ for a seat.
I think someone here recommended one of Graco's convertibles, but I can't remember which. I have the Snugride for our infant seat, and while it's styling and cushion material isn't as fancy as other, more expensive seats, it does the job. Evenflo Symphony is a nice convertible, however, there are many 'trim' levels, so I'd study up and be diligent about that.
You've got a giant baby, right? I think maybe googling for seats that rear face longer (weight/height) will be the way to go. Evenflo has a new seat that extends the rear facing legs, but I doubt that's their cheap seat.
I'm not much help. I might Google for you in a bit. Fridays are generally slow here for search requests.
We have a Graco My Ride65 and DD1 likes it. I think it's a pain to install. But its on the cheaper side
We also have one of these for H's car. It doesn't install as easily as our Chicco Nextfit that is in my car, but it is very lightweight compared to the Nextfit. I actually prefer it over the Nextfit in everything except installation.
Personally, I'd pay more for a seat that would last him a long time (since #giantbaby and all), which might take some research into height and weight limits. I know the Cosco seats are popular for second seats and air travel which might be convenient, but won't last very long since they have lower limits.
A quick search on BRU from low-to-high prices and it looks like Evenflo has a lot of seats that are less expensive, some look quite nice.

I love our Britax Marathon in my car which is the seat we will use for a long time.
SO's car seat is only for the 5 minutes ride to daycare so I don't really care is he's not top comfy in it (omg sorry baby haha)
I saw the Cosco one and found them kinda short - I need to do more Googling for sure
We also have a Graco MyRide 65. We bought it around Christmas and got it for only $80 I think. I would love to find a deal like that again because we need car seats for all of the grandparents cars since they watch C during the day. I think it's a decent car seat. I agree that the install is sort of a pain. And, compared to DH's car seat (Recaro Proride), I find the straps a bit difficult to tighten and loosen.

We have an Evenflo Sureride at the grandparent's and hate it - although it does rear-face to a decent height. The Cosco Scerena Next rear faces to the same stats (40 lbs, 40") and is cheaper. I think you'd have to spend lots of $$$ to get something with better stats than that. Even Britax only goes to 40 lbs rear facing.

This is what I've been finding too. It's hard to find a cheaper seat with bigger height/weight limits.
emejay, Cosco has some new ones out that look like they'd be more comfortable too.
We have this in my car for my toddler. I HATE it. The straps never adjust evenly and I have to practically get into the car to tighten them. There is nothing on the plastic crotch buckle and it gets really hot. I cover it with a burp cloth so it doesn't burn A's legs. It was crazy cheap on Amazon and the only reason I haven't replaced it is because we use my car so infrequently and Glen thinks it's a waste of money to buy yet another car seat.
