Hello again!!! I've been AWOL the past week due to being deep in newborn land, and now I finally feel able to come up for air so time to jump back in and update everyone. **sorry, LONG**
On June 27th, at 41 weeks exactly, I woke up at 3:30 AM with contractions. They were just painful enough that I couldn't get back to sleep, so I got up, showered, put on Netflix and timed them. By 7:00 they were getting more painful and were 5-6 mins apart, so I woke up DH. By 8:30 they were consistently under 5 mins apart so we headed to the hospital. Unfortunately, after 2 hours of monitoring the contractions were getting further apart, and a cervix check showed I was still at 3 cm, same as at my OB appt the week before. We got sent home, which ended up being for the best but was super discouraging at the time because of 7 hours of labour doing basically nothing.
By 5:30 PM, after labouring at home all day, the contractions were bad enough to head back to the hospital. That car ride was the absolute worst -- I said to DH that if they tried to send us home again we'd have to just walk the halls because there was no way in hell I was getting back in that car. Fortunately I was at a 5 so got admitted, yay!
By 8:00 we had a room and I got my epidural, it was pure heaven for about 2 hours. I watched the bachelorette! By 10:00 I was in transition, and I started to feel a ton of pressure in my butt. It was horrible and the epidural didn't help. Turns out I was at 9.5 cm - I ended up stuck there, not quite complete enough to push, for the next 4 hours.
The next 4 hours are a bit of a blur because of the pain/pressure, but during that time I got a fever, with horrible chills, (probably from dehydration but obviously there was a concern about infection, so I had to get IV antibiotics), and baby's heart rate started to decel a bit during contractions.
Finally at around 3:00AM I was ready to push -- pushing felt so good compared to just breathing through the pressure! Unfortunately the baby wasn't tolerating all this action well, so the decision was made to get baby out NOW. We were rushed to the OR, DH had to put on scrubs, all these extra people rushed in, it was terrifying. Turns out the plan was to prepare for a crash c section if needed. Thankfully, we were close enough that it only took 2 contractions, 7 or 8 pushes, and a vacuum assist and our sweet babe was born vaginally at 4:40 AM on June 28th. 7 lbs, 12 oz.
The OB held baby up for DH to see the gender (we were team green), and he announced "its a boy!!", to everyone's confusion seeing as she's a girl. lol!! He thought her labia were balls! Totally broke the ice after a stressful and dramatic delivery.
Anyway, we've been home for a bit and are so totally in love.
