OK, I retract my Hitler statement. Sorry to offend the Germans.
And we can all just agree to disagree on socialism. I feel it has no place in democracy. As I mentioned above, in a democracy the people lead the government. Under socialism, the government rules the people. When you start requiring people to participate in government systems (like government schools), without the ability to opt out, the people no longer have the power. The government owns you and your children. The idea of democratic socialism is impossible.
I lean very far left, but I am not in any way a socialist. I believe in the free market and industry. But I also believe there are certain services that can be better provided by the government then private industry because my government answers to me and my vote, and industry answers to the all mighty dollar. Some services I prefer the state handle include military, firemen, police, schooling, health care and retirement. And so I vote following my beliefs. And if my belief is the majority, than paths are made towards those things. If the majority swings the other way, then strides are made that way.
Socialism is when the government OWNS the industry, hires and pays the people, and takes care of them cradle to the grave. Nothing about what I wrote is Marxist, I don't believe Marxism is a way forward for either Sweden or the US, but I do believe that there are somethings I prefer a government that answers to handle. This is not Socialism and you don't get to decide what those words mean based on feelings, there is a lot of history and political theory behind these definitions.
