I can't believe I'm actually writing out my rainbow's birth story (while LO is asleep on my chest!). Apologies - may be a little long! (And many thanks to my labor buddy eaglewife for updating everyone and for sending such an incredible amount of support and encouragement!!)
TL;DR - Attempted vaginal birth after cervidil induction ended up being an unplanned c-section. Team Green turned...PINK!!! Mai.le Alli.son was born on 8/16/16, 11:54pm, 8lbs 7oz and 22in long!!
I was scheduled for an induction Monday night (8/15). Arrived at 5pm and was shocked & amazed I didn't get bumped! The on-call OB didn't place my Cervidil until around 8:30pm. The first two hours, I wasn't to get out of bed or eat/drink anything and after the placement & I wasn't allowed to eat/drink anything past midnight. So, this left me with an extremely small window to enjoy dinner.
At 5am on Tuesday, the Cervidil was removed and apparently, I had true laboring contractions on top of each other (every 2-3 minutes) starting around 3am. I didn't feel a thing. My OB came to break my water at 7:30am (which took awhile b/c she said I had a steel bag of waters that was difficult to break!) & asked if I was in pain or if I could feel any contractions. I told her "nope!" But of course about 15-20 minutes after my water was broken, my pain scale was slowly escalating to about a 5, so I went ahead and put in a request for an epidural. There were two c-sections back to back so the nurses told me I'd have to wait about 2 hrs before the anesthesiologist could come do my epi. I told them that was fine & got my epi around 9:30am.
The Pitocin was started shortly after my epi was placed and things were progressing pretty well - slowly but surely throughout the day Tuesday (before Cervidil, I was still only 2cm dilated w/ 60% effacement) and by 4ish, I was at about 8cm dilated. By 5:10pm, I was a full 9cm dilated and my OB was getting excited since it seemed very promising this baby would be here by dinner time! (Unfortunately, I was stuck at 9cm for the next six hours - this was getting me close to actively laboring for nearly 21 hours.)
The on-call OB shut off the Pitocin close to 10pm and explained to MH and me that the baby may not be reacting well to the higher dosage so they had to shut it off. They noticed a pattern that seemed like once the contractions were getting steady, baby seems to inadvertently go back up instead of wanting to come out (I was also at zero station for about seven hours w/ no progression). We tried different laboring positions & techniques to see if we could move baby down a little further & have me dilate to 10cm. Even tried inversion laboring (I think that's what it's called) where they put me on O2 and tilted my head back pretty low w/ my legs elevated (which was supposed to have baby want to move further down the pelvis). That didn't work and neither did flipping me side to side - at one point baby was transverse (just the head was looking out to the side instead of up or down) then a few flips later, the baby became posterior and I began having some back labor. While all of this was happening, my first epi dose was beginning to wear off b/c the contractions were coming in so strong and fast, the epi couldn't catch up. The pain was so unbearable - I kept asking the nurse when the anesthesiologist was going to get here b/c I felt like 30 min had gone by but really it was only about 3 min. Once he came and topped me off w/ something stronger, the pain quickly subsided.
Around 11pm, the on-call OB suggested an unplanned c-section would probably be the best option for baby and me since baby didn't seem to want to come down/out on his/her own. MH and I were totally fine with his recommendation and we began prepping for surgery. The nurses were super nice and tried to ease any concerns we might have had by saying things like "we're about to have a huge birthday party across the hall!" which I know MH appreciated b/c I think he was getting a little anxious.
The c-section went really well and MH got to announce the sex once the dr pulled baby out! Team Green had turned...PINK!!!! She's super healthy (with a generous set of lungs!) and we were able to do skin to skin in the OR in just under 10 minutes after she was born. It was incredibly emotional and just amazing - to witness that transition from inside to outside baby. They had me start trying to breastfeed immediately after we got back to our room and she latched on very naturally and has been nursing like a champ - which means we've had a ton of diaper changes already! MH has been getting a lot of practice since I still have slight sea legs from being numb.
Mai.le Alli.son was born on 8/16/16 at 11:54pm, weighing 8lbs, 7oz and was 22in long!! And here's a pic of my squish! PDNQ - I'll be "poofing" it shortly 😉
