I've had two very different experiences with Cytotec. My advice is to ask your doctor for narcotic pain killers in case you need them. For many people, Tylenol is just not enough, especially if you are further along. Keep your heating pad handy, take the whole day off work, and potentially the following day. And make sure someone is home with you in case you need assistance. And be aware that you may not pass everything until days later.
The first time I took Cytotec was to try to expel some retained tissue I had after a D&C. I took it orally, at night, thinking I could sleep through most of it. It caused the worst cramps I've ever had. I was in a lot of pain and luckily had some leftover pain killers from my D&C. Once I started bleeding, I lost a lot of blood very quickly. I completely filled overnight pads once an hour. After filling the second pad I went downstairs to get some water and nearly passed out. After that, the bleeding slowed down. Unfortunately I did not pass everything with the Cytotec and had to have a second D&C.
My second experience was much better. I was 7 weeks pregnant but only measuring at 5w4d. I took Friday off work and started my first dose in the morning. My doctor prescribed 6 doses (2 pills each time, taken 4 hours apart) to be inserted vaginally. I read that it helps the pills absorb more quickly if you get them wet first, so I did that. I had a hard time inserting the pills all the way so DH helped me. I owe him big time for that. My doctor said they usually work by the fourth dose. Around 4 hours after my second dose I started bleeding. The bleeding picked up after the third dose but I ended up taking all 6 doses because I never passed the sac. My bleeding was bright red, a few small clots here and there. I didn't bleed much on the pad, but every time I went to the bathroom, lots of blood would fill the toilet. I had some strong cramps, but nothing like my previous experience. They were managed well with a heating pad and pain killers.
The next two days my bleeding was fairly light and I still had not passed the sac. Monday morning I woke up with really string cramps and started passing thicker, darker blood with more clots. That evening I finally passed the sac. It wasn't painful. When I went to the bathroom I pushed a little and it felt like a large clot was passing. When I looked at it more closely I could tell it was the sac. After Monday I had a few days of moderate bleeding, then spotting for a few more days. My doctor is monitoring me until my HcG goes down to zero.
