@tifga our dr office asks for the rectal temp if we call so we still do that most of the time I'm curious- what was the reason they gave for not taking a temp rectally?
It's the nanny's last day. I'm working from home and have soooooo much to do but she's super emotional and just wants to keep talking. I feel really bad for her. I can't remember if I told you guys, but she wasn't able to get a full-time position at her other job after all, and by the time she found that out we'd already hired her replacement (she still doesn't know we were already looking), so she's pretty much screwed now. Instead of getting a full-time job, she lost one of her two part-time jobs. She's been trying to convince us to keep her on and pay her and the new nanny to both watch C. Ummm... what? No? I do feel bad for her for how things played out, but it is what it is.

I may be being a little cold hearted here, but this sounds like karma biting her in the ass. From what you have old us, she screwed you over countless times by not working like she was supposed to. I don't wish anything bad on her, but you did what you had to do and hopefully this new nanny will be much better!

So I've been fighting this sore throat for a few days and this morning I take my flashlight and look in the mirror at my throat...on the left side there is a single white sore about the size of a pencil eraser. The area around it is red. I've read that strep would mean allover white spots. Does anyone know what this could be? Is it something that I need to get checked out or likely just a sore that will go away? It hurts so bad when I swallow and the pain has gotten progressively worse.

I would get tested for strep. I had it a couple of years ago and it only hurt and was red on one side.

I'm pretty sure R has hand, foot and mouth. He has a low temp, blisters and a rash and he just seems miserable. This is the third sickness in 5ish weeks. Poor little guy.
F stayed with my parents' last night. He'll be home later so it's probably only a matter of time until he gets it.

Ugggh. I may go to our on-campus clinic today if they can fit me in. Any other symptoms? The only other symptom I've had is that I coughed this morning and the tiniest bit of yellow-tinted stuff came out. It wasn't a lot and it wasn't very yellow, but it definitely wasn't clear. Another symptom?

thatgirlrachel , So you can get something called cobblestone throat (I'd never heard of it until the last year) from allergies or a cold- caused by post nasal drip. I've had them a few times now with a sore throat. Coughing up yellow mucous makes me think you might be having post nasal drip.
DoesItComeInPink , I think you could make a cake she can eat, have a cake only for adults, or do no cake. I think most people expect some kind of dessert at a birthday party but you do what you want to do.
geners, the girl is out of her effing mind. Why would she even think you would pay two people to watch C? Good riddance.
thatgirlrachel, that is what I had going on (the white spot on one side) when I had thrush. Apparently I had some farther down my throat too that I couldn't see. But it was terribly painful to swallow and got progressively worse. I took some medicine for 5 days and it cleared right up.

They gave you antibiotics, right? Not something I could grab OTC I assume?

byjove, we survived. I went with the stroller opposed to wearing the baby and that was the right choice. Both dogs have gotten fat in the last year and need to drop 10-20% of their weight...so I'm even more certain of our plan to change the type of food they're getting and we'll be making sure we get daily walks in addition to their 2-3x weekly runs.
I hate the doctor as well. So much so that I actually don't have a PCP. I had to go to the Urgent Care/Walk-in clinic. I never go but now with M I have convinced myself I need to be a little more proactive so I don't pass everything to him. Also, I thought my throat might close up permanently if I didn't do something. It took all of 10 minutes once I was there.

We are life twins. I don't have a PCP either and I might go to our urgent care once a year. When asked about a PCP, I always put down the urgent care doctor because that's all I have. I agree about being more careful with having a baby though. Better to be safe than sorry.

I am mostly this way too. A few years ago when I was having more issues with my arthritis, I had a concierge style doctor that I paid a membership fee to join and it was amazing. Definitely changed the way I saw visiting the doctor- a lot more of the way it used to be and should be. But I've dropped it because I can't justify the expense right now. I'd like to go back to that model eventually though.

This is where I'm at right now. She's brought up at least 4-5 times so far this morning that she really wants us to do this. To ease the transition, etc. etc. And asked to pick up extra shifts wherever she can, babysit whenever, etc. etc.. I get that she's found herself in a tough spot but that's not our problem and we aren't going to rearrange our lives and spend more money solely to help her out financially. She's acting like we just have unlimited money and we should bring her in when we don't need her just to get her some extra money. Uh.... no.
Also she told me when she got here that she needs to leave a half hour early. Already paid her for the full day, of course.
Gah. So annoyed. Just need to make it through today!!

What a entitled little B!#*%!!! I suggest the following steps:
1. Get through the day 2. Pour yourself a glass (bottle) of wine 3. Loose her number
PSA: I have no idea if this is a today only, week only, or just all the time thing...but LO lived in zutanos last winter and I expect they'll become a wardrobe staple again this winter/fall/spring the set of 3 on amazon is basically 3 for the price of 2...and if you have prime you get another 30% off...making it ~$35 for 3 pairs of zutanos. and the girls set has the cream ones that seem to be hard to find.
geners I know this may not be worth your time at this point, but if you were in the mood for a teachable moment - you may want to mention to her that the constant asking for time off, leaving early, showing up late, not showing up at all has caused you headache and you will be forthcoming if she used you as a reference. She needs a reality check. Please don't cover for her (at times) poor performance and have another family go through what you went through.
I got an e-mail yesterday that there's a spot open for us at my employer's daycare for 3 days a week. we don't need daycare right now...but H is *STILL* waiting to hear from the job he interviewed for a month ago if he gets it we do need daycare. they need to know if we want the spot by tomorrow.

Well, after a trip to our on-campus health center...I have strep. Whomp whomp. She said we caught it early and assured me that I can only spread it via kissing, oral sex (?), and just don't cough anyone. My boss is out today so if I leave, we have to close down which I don't want. So I'll stay today and play tomorrow by ear. Of coursed I kissed H and EG this morning so I am praying I didn't pass it to them.

I am with COCO on this geners. It seems as though she has always had someone cover for her in her life because she clearly sees nothing wrong with her behavior. It will probably go in one ear and out the other, with some excuse how you are wrong, but it might be worth just mentioning some of the issues that you have experienced. Or not, and just cut ties
I sometimes like to be an asshole to people who are "never in the wrong" and point out their wrongness when I can.

If you accept it, can you cancel down the line? I think this sounds too good to pass up.
