Might as well write this out while I'm stuck here!
Wednesday morning was very typical. DD1 and I went grocery shopping and then to the children's museum to play. Just before I put her down for her nap, I felt a small gush which didn't feel all that different from the pregnancy discharge I had been experiencing the last few weeks except it soaked through my shorts. After putting DD1 down I felt another fish and soaked another pair of shorts. I decided to call my OB office just in case and let DH know that he may have to come home. I became convinced it was my water when it continued every time I stood or walked. Water broke at 12:45 and we got to the hospital by about 4. At this point I wasn't experiencing any contractions that were painful or consistent.
Upon getting checked in and confirming rupture, the baby had a major decel below 70. All of a sudden I saw my doctor walk into the room (unusual because vaginal deliveries are done by midwives) and I was rolled to my side and given oxygen. Baby was then attached to the internal monitor so I couldn't walk around for labor like I'd hoped. After this episode we didn't seem to have any issues with heart rate.
I was allowed to labor on my own until 1am which was roughly 12 hours after rupture. Contractions were picking up but were long and irregular. At 1am I got the epi and they started me on low Pitocin. I was able to sleep for about 4 hours before the contractions started to become stronger than the epi and I woke up. By 7am I knew I hit transition because I threw up and could feel some pressure. I started my first push at 7:58am with a nice projectile vomit all over myself and Autumn Felicity was born easily at 8:10am on 9/15, just 12 minutes of pushing. 8lbs, 6oz and 22 1/2 in tall.
She had to be deep suctioned and was then put skin to skin where she did the breast crawl and latched on within 10 minutes to breastfeed. I had a minor second degree tear and only needed 4 stitches.
Things became complicated when DD2 tested Coombs positive. This means that my blood type and hers are different and so my body produced antibodies against her which crossed over the placenta and into her. She is having trouble fighting off these antibodies and this presents itself as jaundice and rising bilirubin levels. She was put on the bili blanket overnight in my room the first night and then admitted to the NICU yesterday morning for triple light therapy.
As of today she will be in the NICU until at least tomorrow night but possibly as long as Wednesday. Her levels are dropping very slowly and they are cautiously weaning her from the lights and monitoring her for relapse. I'm not handling this as well as I would hope. My hormones are out of control and I've been crying a lot. I was not preparing for my 40 weeker to need NICU time and I feel like it's my fault since the antibodies that are in her system came from me.
At any rate, she's breastfeeding really well and big sister is totally smitten with her. She's the cutest little squish.
