Sorry, this ended up being pretty long.
I woke up Monday morning at 40w5d to what seemed like early contractions, but I hadn't had any labor signs other than losing my MP so I didn't really think they'd last. I happened to have a check-up that morning and was 3cm, 80+% effaced, and at -1 station. I was happy to at least have made progress from the 2cm. My OB did a membrane sweep and we scheduled an induction for the following Monday.
After my appointment I decided I was definitely having contractions about 10 min apart. I gave MH a heads up and told work I was finishing the day from home. Contractions went from 10 min apart to 6-7, back to 10, then back to 6-7 over the course of the afternoon. At about 4pm they jumped to 3-4 min apart and were getting painful. They didn't slow down again so we headed up to the hospital.
When we got to the hospital I was still only 3cm do they told us to walk the halls of L&D Triage for an hour. After 45 min I threw up a couple times so they checked me again and I was at 5cm. It was 8:15pm and at this point I was having really bad back labor and contractions that felt never-ending. I threw my desire for a med free birth out the window and asked for an epidural once we got up to the actual L&D floor.
I didn't get that epidural until midnight... In the meantime the back labor got progressively worse and my contractions were coming back-to-back with literally no break in between. Even the dr couldn't believe how many I was having without a break. The epidural was heavenly and MH and I tried to rest.
Around 3am they checked on me and told me the epidural had made my contractions somewhat irregular and started talking pitocin, but when they checked me I had progressed to 8cm so they let me be. By 5am I was feeling trickles and they confirmed my water had broken. Around 6am I was fully dilated but baby was still a bit high. They broke my water (apparently the trickles were only a partial rupture) and left me to labor down a bit.
Just after 7am I had 2 contractions where I felt my body start pushing on its own so we go ready to push. I ended up pushing for about 1 1/2 hours and watched my son come into this world using a mirror they had set up for me.
R.yan J.oseph was born on September 13 at 8:48am at 40w6d after 23 hours labor and 1 1/2 hours pushing. He was 7lb 14.4 oz and 20 1/2 in long. I ended up with a 2nd degree tear that required a few stiches.
I am so in love and so happy to have my perfect little rainbow baby in my arms.
