Just got a call from DC that a kid smacked DS1 with a big toy in the head. I guess its policy that they call and let the parent know with any bump or issue above the neck? They said he's totally fine, cried for a second but he's playing and running around. They said I don't need to come get him...they just needed to tell me.

And now I need you all to talk me down from a spiral of anxiety. My BFF's DD has sores in her mouth. We were all at that play date where the kid had HFM.
I can deal if DS1 gets it. It will suck....but what the fuck do I do if B gets it?
Are the kids contagious only when they have sores? I wore B the entire play date and was no where near the HFM kid but DS1 was.

I have a question for those sending their LOs to daycare. What type of clothes will you be packing in their extras and what clothes will you send them in?
I have never had a tiny baby in daycare and I know that it can be chilly there so my instinct is to just send him in cotton footed pajamas and also use those for extras but I didn't know if that was common or not... My only other choice would be onsies, pants, and socks but that seems like a lot of extra work.

melody330 I think it's contagious even wo sores. My nephew gave it to my mom, DS1, and me a few years ago and he only had the bumps - no sores. DS1 was only 3 months old when he got it, but it wasn't that bad. Even his ped wasn't too concerned. It just eventually went away on its own. So breathe. It will be ok! But I hope your boys don't get it!

B isn't in DC yet, but with DS1 I sent in an extra onesie, pants and socks. I sent it in a ziplock bag labeled with his name and the size he was in. They stayed at school until he outgrew that size clothes.
We dressed him like we would if we were going out somewhere for the day...so normal clothes. Onesie/shirt, pants and socks. What seems like a lot of work? No snark, genuinely asking.

melody330 kids can be contagious for months after the sores are gone. It can be spread by coughing, sneezing, feces (I know, ew) and the sores. My ds had it just before he turned two and it wasn't fun but it wasn't that bad. I think we had a mild case and neither Dh or I got it.

They're contagious before they have any symptoms and remain contagious for a while. Once it hits a daycare pretty much every kid gets it because it's impossible to stop or contain. The sores usually appear a day or 2 after a fever.
We started an outbreak at daycare because DD was there on a wed morning, but her fever showed up thurs afternoon. Also didn't know it was hfm she'd been exposed to until I told sil she had a fever and sil told me nephew had hfm.
Watch for fevers, and you can give infant Tylenol for discomfort. It will be a few days of crankiness and discomfort, but all will be ok. The sores don't always bother them much, but it can come with a sore throat too.

melody330 I was just thinking of diaper changes in zip up footie pajamas as opposed to wrangling a kicking baby back into pants after a diaper change. I guess it's probably only like a 30 second difference in diaper change time. Then I was thinking multiple pieces of clothing in a pants and onsie outfit verses just the one piece of clothing in a zip up pajamas.

I am probably way over thinking this.
You can always ask the teacher what they prefer. They never complained or asked for a certain outfit or anything.

I do pants/onesie/socks, footed sleeper, or footless sleeper/socks, with variations of those for extras in a labeled ziplock. I figure the teachers have seen it all and are pros at diaper changes. Just send whatever.

This. With DD1 I just had them keep a whole bunch of extra clothes at school for changes. She wore a lot of long sleeved onesies, pants, and socks. I agree that the daycare teachers are pros. No need to worry about what they're wearing.
f had his shots today too. Currently sobbing in his sleep on me
Awww poor guy. DS cried out once earlier. I had to give DD her first infant Tylenol when she got hers because she was so tired, but it seemed like her legs hurt too much to sleep. Of course I was able to put her down for naps, but I've just been wearing DS for fear he'll wake up like he usually does.

Speaking of shots, did anyone else's clinic offer the numbing gel first? We did it but won't do it again. The nurse put it on and then put clear bandages over the injection areas until it was time to administer the shots, which I understand is to keep the gel on the skin, but when she removed them, he cried from the adhesive pulling on his skin and cried even harder from the injections, so I just felt as if the steps to numb the pain negated the injection pain.

They're contagious while they're running a fever. My pediatrician said DD was fine to go back to school 24 hours after a fever even with sores.

I probably would have declined it but the nurse made it sound like it was completely the norm. Also, insurance did not cover it and it cost $30, so hell to the naw next time. He will be able to have Tylenol with the next round anyway so I figure that'll be fine. Hope your lil guy feels better soon!
