Hey ladies,
Hit me up with your favorite 1 (maybe 2 syllable) girl first names.
I like uncommon. Long names.
DH likes short & popular. Like look at the top ten names in the US and those are basic his favs. The only name he's suggested (and obsessed with) is Kai for a boy.
Rose is out (DD's MN)
Marigold is my front runner for middle names right now.

I love Marigold! These are mostly 2 syllable.
Anne Marigold Anna Marigold Bree Marigold (This seems like it would be a nn,but it's actually a legit fn! Anglicized form of Brígh.) Clara Marigold Eve Marigold Freya Marigold Jane Marigold Kira Marigold Lyra Marigold Noelle Marigold Simone Marigold Thea Marigold Willa Marigold

If this helps at all DH just admitted that he likes Savannah and Molly.
But we can't use Molly because my cousin used it for her daughter.
And I'm put off by Savannah because of how popular it is and also idk if it's weird because my good gf's name is also Savannah. Even though I really like the name.

The thing about popularity is, even the top ten aren't as popular as the most popular names from our generation. When we were growing up, a MUCH higher percentage of girls were named Jennifer or Ashley, as opposed to Sophia or Isabella today. Then you add in all the different spellings of the same names, and some go up in popularity, while some go down. There was a recent thread on the actual popularity of names by spelling.
And of course, you never know what names are going to suddenly become very popular. We could have the next Twilight similar craze come out, and suddenly a relatively unknown name is shooting up the charts.
Or your kid could hate being the only one they know with their name, like I did. My name is fairly popular now, but wasn't then.
You just never know, and limiting yourself to such a small selection of names, especially since your H prefers popular names, is really doing yourself a disservice.
I started going through the baby name book last night and this morning and am trying to keep more of an open mind. I've got a pretty solid list for DH to look at
reginaphalange you'll probably think I'm nuts too (DH certainly does). I typically refer to any name in the top 1000 as popular.
That's good to know about Tess. It was the only one I hadn't looked up yet.
I will preface this by saying that you absolutely do you but I feel like your expectations are just a bit unrealistic. Finding a name you love out of the top 1000 is somewhat doable but finding one you AND your H love just seems impossible. Like I said earlier, Eve is in the 400s but that means that 0.035% of the babies born last year are named Eve. That is such a tiny amount!
Also, anecdote time, my name broke the 1000s in 1990 and then went out of the 1000 the year I was born. Guess what it's at now? 219... and I've only met two others in my whole life.

Savannah- Tossssssss!!!!! Alice- Keep!! This is my favorite name ever. Eve- Keep! Bridget- Toss. Maribel- Toss. Maybelle- Toss, then toss some more. Margaret- Keep. May- Toss. Eileen- Toss. Eloise- Keep! Heather- Toss. I feel this name is very dated. Holly- Keep. Vanessa- Toss.
Savannah- toss Alice- keep Eve-keep Bridget-keep Maribel-toss Maybelle-toss Margaret-keep May (would also be used as a nn for the above three M names) - keep Eileen- toss Eloise- keep Heather- toss Holly- toss Vanessa- keep
Savannah - toss Alice - toss Eve - keep Bridget. - keep Maribel - keep Maybelle - toss Margaret - toss May (would also be used as a nn for the above three M names) - toss as fn Eileen - toss Eloise - keep Heather - toss Holly - keep Vanessa - toss

Savannah: keep Alice -- keep Eve -- keep Bridget -- keep Maribel -- toss; really repetitive with the mn Maybelle -- toss Margaret -- keep May -- keep as a nn, toss as a fn Eileen -- toss Eloise -- keep Heather -- toss Holly -- toss Vanessa -- toss
I'm probably beating a dead horse, but names are getting more spread out (not counting various spellings) so like dreadpiratebuttercup said, children are going to be less likely to feel like everyone shares your name.To put it in perspective: In 1915, Mary was #1 (percent of total births: 5.6830%) and Atha was #1000 (percent of total births: 0.0043%) In 1990, Jessica was #1 (percent of total births: 2.2627%) and Louise was #1000 (percent of total births: 0.0089%) In 2015, Emma was #1 (percent of total births: 1.0519%) and Alianna was #1000 (percent of total births: 0.0137%)
If you are interested here is the link to SSA's data you can download for state-specific data. It has every state separated and information from 1910 on to 2015 down to names given to 5 children. Of course spelling variations are going to make a name feel more popular, and certain areas within the state may have its own trends, but I think it would be a shame to give up on a name you love just because it's in the top 1000.
