@unicornofthesea For your 2.5 year old you will need a lot of absorbency for night time. For DS1 we use a large flat or prefold and a hemp doubler. If you are just starting out and are not sure about investing a lot of $ I would start by using them during the day and disposables at night. If you are close to potty training you could also try a training pants system during the day. I have found the absolute hardest part of cloth diapering is finding an overnight solution for a toddler, so don't be discouraged! If you post a pic of the fit I may be able to help you troubleshoot.
I've bought two lots of OS pocket diapers now, and can't wait to get them. My lady is open to cloth diapers, but at least for now I think we'll keep him in sposies on the days he's with her. Not sure what to do about nighttime. Not sure - the pockets I bought will come to me with the original inserts included, but should I buy more / extra?
Depending on what kind of inserts come with your pockets you can add absorbency with a doubler and it might work just fine for night time. Otherwise fitteds are a good option at this age. DS2 uses sustainable baby fitteds at night but they are kind of expensive. DS1 wore them too so they were worth it to us.

The pockets I'm getting are Nicki's Diapers, Fuzzibunz Elite, and a few Imagine pockets too. And the inserts are just the original ones - so I'm assuming cotton / organic material? He's not a super heavy wetter, so I guess we'll just have to see. When he was NB, I did have a handful of the GMD workhorse fitteds, and I liked those a lot.
How long were the diapers used for when you bought them? I kept them from DD1 but the inserts were so beat up they weren't going to work well. You might need new inserts but she used them for 2.5 years.
@unicornofthesea, you prewashed them 3 times. Did you use soap each time? Did you fully dry them between each wash? If you felt it, did the insert actually absorb anything or did it all sort of just run out the sides? I'd make sure there isn't any soap left in the inserts because it can really mess up how much it absorbs.
@east I only had the 3 inserts at the time so I did use soap and washed them hot with other baby stuff. I dried them between each wash. Last night the pads were soaked and the pee came out the top. His waist line was wet. I doubled up the inserts amd folded them at the top, so he basically had 4x the pad in the front .
I did just run the water on the inserts from last night and the water ran off. It didn't absorb immediately. Do I need to wash them more?
Yes but not with soap. There is probably soap built up into them which will repel water/pee.

@unicornofthesea you might have soap build up but keep in mind that some materials like microfiber won't absorb water without some compression, so pouring water on the insert is not an accurate way to test absorbency. Run the inserts in a hot water wash without soap until there are no bubbles to get rid of any build up. Flip inserts are pretty thin which is nice and trim but not the best for absorbency. You can always try a prefold or flat in the flip covers if the inserts don't work out.
Do I never use soap? Ie just not when they're brand new?
Soap with hot water to wash. Then an extra rinse to make sure there is no soap left. I have to run a whole extra cycle though on "light" to get all the soap out.
You might need hemp liners for night though. We have been using disposables at night because LO is a belly sleeper and it seems less comfortable to have the snaps and stuff in the front for her. But we always used cloth with DD1, I just can't remember when she started needing hemp.

They seem to be mostly brand new. She says she had a very large stash (50 diapers) that they rotated through, so they've only been used a handful of times each.
Yeah we only had 28 with DD1 so they were well worn.
The wash instructions are: wash covers and inserts separately and don't wash them together with other clothes...
Does this sound right, or just this brand?
I think they mean to pull the insert out of the pocket before washing. I've never heard of having to wash the covers and inserts in different loads. You should be able to wash all of your diapers together, but I don't think they want you washing them with towels or jeans, etc. I'm not familiar with that brand though so maybe others have some insight.
@unicornofthesea, I use powdered tide original to line 1. What do they smell like coming out of the wash? What kind of washer do you have (top or front loader)? Do you have enough in each load for them to agitate against each other? In the extra rinse do you see bubbles? Sorry for so many questions, there are just a lot of factors to find the right routine.
I have heard that free and clear detergents aren't great for cloth but I don't know anything about seventh generation. If you have hard water you might need to adjust for that. The cloth diaper board on TCF is really good at troubleshooting diaper wash routines.
