Hey all! So I posted on Sunday that it was looking like go-time since my water broke bright and early Sunday morning. Here's how everything went down!
So as you may remember, I was admitted to the hospital on 9/9 for high blood pressure and monitoring. Over the weekend, hubby and I discussed and decided to get my OB to either discharge me for at-home bed rest or to schedule a c/s, since that's what the OB was leaning toward doing for delivery. Well, we apparently have a decision maker on our hands because on Sunday morning, I got up to pee around 6:30, laid back down, and was trying to get a little more rest before nurses came in for their morning rounds. At about 7:30, I felt a huge gush, laid there for a second wondering if I was peeing, and then immediately started calling my husband's name (he was sleeping on an air mattress across the room). He finally woke up, I said, "My water just broke!" and he thought I was joking. Then he saw the puddle and called the nurse in. While I laid there in all this fluid, they started getting all the paperwork together. I think they finally let me get up about half an hour after my water broke so I could change into a hospital gown, and then they wheeled me over to L&D, probably about an hour after everything started.
At 10am, the nurse put in the cervidil, contractions weren't feeling great, but they weren't too regular. First cervidil fell out, so they replaced it and decided I was stuck with bed pans until 10pm when they would take out the cervidil. Except the second one fell out, too, around 7:30pm, and thankfully they didn't feel a need to replace it. Pitocin started at 10pm, and holy cow the contractions! The pitocin started working pretty immediately, and contractions were three minutes apart by about midnight. For some reason, I had 1am in mind for holding off on the epidural (some crazy shit about wanting to know what labor felt like). I only said I changed my mind and didn't want to do this anymore one time, though, so I'm pretty proud of myself. As soon as the clock struck 1, we called for the epidural, and I got that about 2am. Managed to get about 4 hours of crappy sleep before nurses were back in for morning rounds and such.
The doctor came in (first time I'd seen him in over a week because he was on vacation all week last week!) and checked me and I was 2cm dilated and 70% effaced. He said to keep up the good work, but that he wanted to change to internal monitors, which was fine since baby girl kept falling off the monitor and I couldn't get comfortable. Around 9:30, my two amazing nurses came in to check me again before upping my pitocin. I was 5cm and 90%, so they guessed it wouldn't be long. I decided to try to take a quick nap, and around 10:30, my husband sent my parents to our house to check on the dogs. I couldn't sleep well and finally realized I kept jerking awake because I was feeling so much pressure in my butt that I wanted to push. We let the nurses know around 11am, they checked me again, and basically said it was go time! We called my parents and told them to turn around and come back to the hospital. Thankfully we don't live far, so we were able to hold off on pushing until my parents and the ILs could come into the room briefly to see us.
I started pushing at 11:30. It was so strange because it was just me, hubby, and our two nurses. Not as hectic as I imagined. I pushed through four contractions (we chatted with our nurses about how we met in between contractions), and on the second push of my fourth contraction, they stopped me halfway through and said it was time to call the doc. I'd been watching in the mirror and saw her really crowning (holy crap was that amazing!), so I figured. I had to breathe through three contractions while doc got to the room and everyone got prepped (that's when it got hectic). Doc sat down on the stool, we saw a contraction starting, I pushed once, took a breath, pushed for I think a four-count when doc said, "Head is out! Oh so is she!" And when I looked up, I saw both of my girls for the first time.
Oli.via Ad.ele and Cathe.rine So.phia were born side by side at 12:04pm on September 26. We got to spend the rest of the day with both girls. O weighed in at 5lbs 2oz and is 18 inches long. C was 6.4oz, and she looked so beautifully peaceful. We said our final goodbyes to C this afternoon when the funeral director came to get her, and now me, H, and O are getting used to being a family of three plus one in Heaven. O is a bit jaundiced, not surprising since she was five weeks early. She's currently glow-worming under the lamps, and I'm having to supplement with formula and get going on pumping in order to make sure she's eating plenty to have enough bowel movements to get the bilirubin out of her system. We were hoping to go home tomorrow, but it's looking like Thursday or Friday is more likely. Other than the jaundice, she is perfectly healthy. She is so beautiful and we are completely in love!
And now for some pictures:
