joy - if you really are done BFing, please don't feel guilty! You now get to focus on spending even more quality time with your LO - no more quality time with your pump!

This. All of this. I couldn't have said it better.
What pumps do you guys have? I ended up getting the Spectra S2 which I really like. I bit the bullet & got a Sarah Wells pumping bag for work which actually is very convenient.
I'm still working on trying to eliminate my 1 MOTN pump. I am so engorged that at 2-3am (5-6 hrs since last pump) I get several more oz than I do any other pumping session that day. Last night I tried to pump just for 5 minutes. Mastitis was so awful I don't want to get it again. It sucks to get up & pump when there is a baby sleeping next to me. Seems like by the time I'm finally back in bed & truly dosing off she is then waking to eat.

katelm I have the medela pump in style and my SIL gave me her same exact one to leave at my office. My son was sleeping til 3am and I was getting up to pump at midnight. Same as you, so full, and much more output than daytime. But randomly he started waking at midnight and 3am for the past couple weeks. Have no idea why he's not getting the long stretch anymore but I kind of don't even mind since I would have to get up to pump anyways. I still do pump the side he doesn't take at each wake up.

I forget who mentioned this, but I remember learning a while ago from this board that you could press the let-down button to re-start the quick suction on the Medela PISA and that little tip has seriously improved my pumping output lately - so I just wanted to mention it in this thread in case it helps anyone else out! I wait until the milk pretty much has stopped flowing after my first let-down, then hit the button. This has helped me pump a 2nd let-down and has probably increased my output by an ounce!

Isn't it funny how excited you can get for one more ounce? I remember telling my mom the first time around that I never knew my life would revolve completely around ounces!

especially when you find out daycare or husband threw out the 2 oz he didn't eat... no!

Omg, I get so angry when my H doesn't follow my instructions for breastmilk. I think he finally realized to basically never throw anything out without checking with me, but he still needs to learn that if DS needs a little more than whatever bottle I left him with, don't heat up another full bottle - pour half an ounce or an ounce into a bottle and ONLY heat that up. Someday I'll get through to him...

It's huge! I used to only be able to get a max of 3oz at one time (both boobs combined), and often less. I just pumped 4oz for the first time and I'm ecstatic! He usually takes 3-3.5oz at a time now, but I'm hoping that if we can stretch out feedings a little more by the time I'm back at wrk (in 3 weeks) he'll be taking 4oz, so it's reassuring to see that it's possible for me to pump that much in one session.

katelm I'm also waking to pump while baby is still sleeping. She's been consistantly doing 5-6hr stretches this week and that's just too long for me and so painful. I'm up at the 4hr mark usually and then just give her one of the bottles I've pumped if she wakes at the 5hrs (I pump for 10 minutes and get 8oz total so that's 2 bottles for her). I've only had one time where I actually fell back to sleep after so I feel your pain.

I feel a lot of guilt. I wish I didn't. I had so much more confidence a few weeks ago in my decisions.
I have the hospital grade pump for another week and feel that I should at least finish out the time with it. I don't know.
Sorry. I'm just rambling as I grapple with this choice in the face of myself, my kid, and other outside influences (my mom, the pediatrician, etc).
It'll take time to come to piece with the decision. But you will, I promise. Hugs.
This was my experience with DD1, too. It was really emotional to quit, and I think I dragged out the decision too long. But once the decision was made, plus a little time, I reached a good place with it. You've worked your tail off already, and have sacrificed a lot for your baby just in terms of suffering migraines. Hugs, joy!

Yeah that is the downside that she may wake up sooner and then I have not completely re-filled enough to feed her. So then I have to give her a bottle and then re-pump after to get back on schedule. Blah
I was also getting something crazy like 6.5-7.5oz during the middle of the night. I'm trying to reduce the output by only pumping for a few minutes now. I really hope it doesn't affect my daytime supply

I'm struggling some with this. Since DD eats a 4oz bottle, I'm nervous to mess with the pumping (even though getting 8oz in 10 minutes seems like a lot) and impact my supply. Right now during the day she eats every 2 hrs (4oz). I also had a super painful clog that prompted me to start the pumping. Ugh for you have mastasis twice already!! I'm impressed you worked through that!

remylove1011 mastitis only once thank goodness. And it happened after I went 7-8 hours one night. 8oz in 10 min is a lot although if your LO takes in 4oz every 2 hours that's quite a bit too! Mine takes 4oz every 3 hours
And actually it seems like my supply starts to decrease in general if I "only" breastfeed but then it goes back up if I pump instead. My baby doesn't empty the breasts I don't think.

Oops, not sure why I thought twice! Yeah, DD's a little piggy. She's a pretty big girl already so I'm guessing that's why. I'm interested to see how it all works when I go back to work and pump multiple times a day.
