I kind of mind popular, growing up with the name Megan might have something to do with it! I used to manage retail and at one point had 5 Megan's working for me, yuck! To make it even worse I am over 6 feet so I was 'big Megan', awful! I just can't do that to my kid. We loved Emaline and Adalaide for years but I can't bring myself to do it with Emma/ Addie being so popular now.
I prefer names that aren't super popular, not classic (John, Michael, William etc) but also not yoo-neek or too odd/different. My boys are Dean & Hudson. Easy to pronounce, you probably know someone by these names but not 5 in every elementary school classroom. Names up for debate for baby girl are Callie, Lena, Celia, Maggie.
If you are concerned about having too many of a popular name in your child's class, I'm starting to think that having so many people opting for "unique" names and weird spellings kind of helps out with popularity in terms of how many of a certain name you see in a school. There are so many names that have been in the top 10 for years, and I still haven't seen a single one come through at the school I teach. Not so common names? Plenty. I thought popularity would be an important factor to me because I didn't want DD to have a bunch of kids with the same name in her class, but it seems like enough people are opting for less common names that it might not matter as much as I originally thought. We decided on a name that has been in the top 10 since 2001 and I've never taught a girl with that name before! :-)
Our names are popular, but classic. DS is Jack, which was my husband's grandfather's name. This one will be Violet, which is gaining in popularity fast but we love it.

I'm struggling with this actually. I am in love with the name Liam but it's becoming very popular. I really want to avoid my son being one of whoever mane with the same name when he goes to school but I also can't let go of the name! Hopefully DH and I can come up with something else that I feel just as strongly about!

Our girl name wasn't going to be a popular name. The only boy name we can agree on has risen in popularity in the past couple of years but I can't stand any of DH's other name options. So semi-popular name it is!
Popularity is tricky. My DD's name is rare (in the US), has never been in the top 1000. I like the popular classic names at the moment, but am inclined to count popularity against a name. I suspect that naming DS will come down to one classic that is currently in the top 10 (using a less common nn) and one unheard of, but supposedly ancient, name that feels more "in line" with DD. Not sure where we'll end up. I wish DS would hold up a sign during one of the ultrasounds that tells us what his name is...would be so much easier.
My name was very popular and is now a "mom" name. I liked meeting others with my name, especially if they spelled it the same way. At one point I was at a very small elementary school with only 50 students in K-8 and 4 of us had the same name. Still didn't bother me.
