We transitioned dd1 at 21 months because her baby sister was on the way. We talked it up beforehand to get her excited for it. We started with her nap because we thought she might be more comfortable during the day. We kept her bedtime routine the same but gave her a portable nightlight so she could turn it on at night if needed. We did tell her she wasn't allowed to get out of bed and it worked lol she still only will go a couple steps from bed and then run back in. For us, it was a simple transition. I hope it is for you too!

Maybe I can get some pointers as well. We just switched a couple of weeks ago because DD1 was saying she didn't like the crib anymore. We figured it was because she moves so much at night that she was bumping into the sides.
We talked it up, got princess sheets, and made a huge deal out of it. She goes down much easier now but she will not stay sleeping all night in it. Every morning between 2-4 usually we find her sound asleep on our floor half under the bed. She says now there is a mummy in her room and she's too scared but likes our bed so much. I have no idea what to do anymore.
Sorry to hijack! I hope you have a smooth transition!

Our transitions was smooth as well. She climbed out of the crib one night when I was up with L. I was going back and forth between L and E that night. It was by far the worst night I have ever had.
Once we switched, I told her to stay in her bed until mommy came and got her. She never leaves her bed. I have to get up to take her to the potty at night if she needs to go. She also no longer screams at bedtime. It just stopped when she switched to her toddler bed.

This might be a little late, but we transitioned E to her toddler bed (her crib with the front rail taken off) a few months ago. We're putting her in a twin bed after the first of the year, so there may be a little more difference, but she did really well with the toddler bed.
Her first sleep in it was for her nap and she did really well. We made sure to be really excited about it so she would see that it was a good step to move on to. The first few days she wouldn't get out of bed until I came in to get her, but she slept just fine. She takes toys to bed and some nights/naps she would sit up and play for a while before she went to sleep, but no more than maybe 10-20 minutes.
On the fourth day she got brave and got out of bed. This was ok for a couple of days, again she would play for a bit and then climb back in and go to sleep. But then one day I looked on the monitor and caught her in her closet, and she had gotten into a tote fill of diaper essentials and was just covered in baby powder. So I got a lock for her closet door. Prior to that I also locked the two drawers in her dresser that have medicine, sharp things, desitin etc.
I think the next day at nap she played for a very long time, and I ended up going in there three times and telling her to get back in bed and go to sleep. On the third time, I told her if she gets out of bed again, I'm spanking her butt. She stayed in bed and has never gotten out since.
I've seen her get up really quick, run to get a toy and then quickly get back in bed, but other than that the transition went well. This might be a no-brainer but make sure you don't have any hard toys or books on the floor right beneathe her. E has fallen out of bed twice in the toddler bed. The first time her guard rail wasn't locked and she fell out and must have landed on something hard because she cried and woke me up. The second time she was just sleeping at the end where the guard rail doesn't cover. But she fell out, sat there confused for a second and then climbed back into bed.
