Question for anyone who has had mastitis... Did it come on super quickly? I woke up to a slightly achy right breast out of the blue this morning. I thought I just pressed too hard when doing compressions pumping yesterday. However, over the work day so far today I have started to feel icky and fever-ish (with chills) and the breast feels warm to the touch. I'm going to check my temp when I get home but I just didn't think mastitis would come on so fast? Wouldn't I have felt discomfort from the duct being clogged before it progressed to that?
Yes, I've had it three times. Only once did I have a clog the day before.
The most recent time it happened so fast. Hours. I felt funny and a few hours later I had chills, high fever and the redness came last.
FX you don't have it....I'm not sure what time it is where you are but I wouldn't go the night without abx. My MW prescribed me something over the phone MOTN last time.
That's exactly what happened. I was out of it all day. Called my ob/gyn even before I got home to actually take my temp and they called me in a prescription. Got home and checked... yup, fever of 101.2. Sooo glad I called when I did.

Do you guys still take a prenatal vitamin? I'm in camp that vitamins are mostly expensive pee and not necessary for your average healthy adult. But I've always viewed prenatal ones differently and have taken one religiously since TTC. I took it when I was nursing DS1 but wonder how much of the vitamin is actually being transferred through my milk. Anyone have facts on this?

I don't have any facts for you, just wanted to say I'm taking a "postnatal" vitamin that's supposedly for breastfeeding moms and babies. When I saw an LC a while back she asked if I was taking one so I felt like that meant to continue doing so.
rungirlrun I am still taking one but I don't stress when I forget to take it.
+1 Everything I read says diet is complementary to milk, not definitive. Mother Nature makes up the perfect formula in our bodies to provide for our babies. The only thing I try to be diligent about is giving HIMthe VitaminD supplement drops daily since we live in a northerly latitude and don't get much outdoor sunlight time during the winter months.
I think the vitamins when breastfeeding are actually more important for YOU than baby. I do not know about all nutrients, but regarding calcium, your body will actually leach calcium from your bones to give to baby if you're not getting enough. Even if that happens, moms' bones usually recover quickly after weaning, but it's probably better to make sure you get enough.

I still take a prenatal vitamin but they aren't the super fancy kind I used to take when I was TTC and then PG. I am also of the thought process that it is best for the mother's health to have those added vitamins. I also take an extra dose of calcium since I don't eat any dairy and dont really get a bunch from any other things.
After dd I was sporadic with prenatals and she seemed to spit up more when I took them, so I stopped. When this kid became a spit up machine I stopped again. He's still very spitty so I probably should just take them.
I take magnesium regularly because my migraines have been very few since I started, and add in calcium before my period to combat a supply dip.
So I've pumped 6 ounces at work. 4 ounces the first time and 2 the next time. How the heck are you people pumping 10-12 oz??
I'm probably going to have to pump once at home to make up the extra ounces. It's looking like B will take 8-9 oz while I'm gone. Ugh.
My supply has dropped significantly. I had to go up to 4 sessions during my 8 hour day to get 9-10oz, and with the night time wake-ups this week I haven't been able to pump in the morning. I need to start trying to do that again. But +1 to hydrate hydrate hydrate!
How much do your babies take at daycare? R is only there for 5 hours twice a week and they give him 9 ozs. They are convinced he needs more than that too. He will be going full time in January and it doesn't seem sustainable, but I keep losing this fight

I was away from DD1 for 11 hours (6:30 am - 5:30 pm inc commute time) and she took 12 oz in that time. On rare occasion I'd pump more and send it, but she never needed more.

Mine is away from me 9 hours and he takes 10-12 oz. I figure 1.5 oz per hour.

I am away from S about 11 hours a day and he takes 12 oz. I send an extra bottle but he has not needed it yet. I only send 4 oz bottles because I know that after 4 oz he will spit up a ton. We did a lot of trial and error with H feeding S.

I hydrate like crazy and eat more calories than I should. I also eat oatmeal a lot and drink Mother's Milk tea. Our schedule is up 1239239843 times a night to nurse. Nurse at 7:30-7:45 before daycare drop off, then I pump at 8:45, 11:45, 2:45. Pick her up and nurse at 4:15 and then on demand for the rest of the night. I usually get 5-6 oz. at first session, then 3 oz., and another 3-4 oz. for the last session. I also pump once at night about 1.5 hours after she goes to sleep.
It could just be the stress for you and getting used to the schedule right now. Keep at it, I bet you'll see your output increase soon.SaveSave
I know he needs less, because he won't nurse till after 6 when I pick him up at 3
Could you talk to them about paced bottle feeding? My lactation consultant said even a lot of the best DC providers aren't familiar with it. Maybe he just drinks it too fast so they think he needs more?

This. I also printed out things from Kellymom and gave them to the DC. They said it helped a lot an added it to their packet of things they give to parents.

I will try again. So far they have not been receptive to anything I have said and when i tried to explain that I had researched it, they laughed at me and said all babies are different...

omg! Huge throat punch to them. I can't believe they would blow you off like that.

So if you complain about something on the internet, your problem is immediately solved, right? I picked him up today, and they were like "we tried doing it the way you said too, and he was fine" -- he ate 6 ozs! there was a bottle leftover!

I know this has been discussed before but can't remember when so maybe someone can help me out. My left boob is very tender underneath it on the inside. It's not red but hurts when I press on it. I can nurse fine and feel fine otherwise. Any idea what this is? Is this what a clogged duct is? Or the beginning of mastitis? I've never had either so I'm clueless.
rungirlrun I would assume a clog if there's no mark or redness on the outside.
I would only assume mastitis if it turned red, you had a fever or were getting chills along with the clog. I often get clogged ducts and it can be sore sometimes.
