I only sort of skimmed this thread, but for those of you with older kids don't forget about Duplo! My kids love playing with it and it really spans a large range of ages.
For the babies, Mega Blocks are great. My baby loves to take apart anything I build for her and DS (2.5) still likes to play with them. DD1 is probably growing out of the Mega Blocks at 4.5.
Blocks like this are great to tell family about, too. Last year I put a bunch of Duplo on the kids' wishlists and everyone bought it. All of it lol. We have a huge Duplo stash now and it's super fun.

We love everything Lego. Clara has shunned duplos already though and only wants the big kid sets. She and DH build them together.

I wish F liked duplos. He might play with them for 2 seconds once a month.
byjove Wow, advanced! My kids haven't even seen regular legos yet. That must suck with a baby, though. The pieces are so small!
I am not sure if it is advanced, but she really does prefer them. And yes, it does suck with a baby. DH has 3 huge container bins of all the legos he had from growing up that they'll play with and of course Margs wants in too.

What about waffle blocks, lincoln logs or magnetic tiles?
Waffle blocks are on our list! My parent's will get them for us. When we were little my brother and I would stand along the face and my dad would whip them at us like dodge ball. #dadoftheyear
