I'm pretty sure a few of these are not in Canada, but I think you can find most online.
I used mostly fitteds & covers for the NB stage.
Fitteds:
Kissaluvs size 0 and Green Mountain Diapers workhorses. The workhorses were my favs. You may be able to find some used in Canada or on the BST site in the US with someone willing to ship to you. I don't think they ship new to Canada (that may have changed, worth checking). Kissas went out of business, but same with finding used. If you can find them, get the snapless ones - they last longer. Even if you only get a few of these, they are great for overnight changes.
Prefolds or flats (half flats for NB) are the most economical choice - again, I like GMD but Osocozy and Imagine are nice too. They have Osocozy on Amazon US, so maybe Canada too.
All In One's - Blueberry nb simplex - pricey but oh so worth it. They lasted my average kid 12 weeks. I had 4 of them, mostly for the diaper bag or when someone else was helping out. Worth getting a couple if you can.
Kawaii P&N - great for the in-between stage. Won't fit right away, but great for bridging the gap between NB & OS - cheap as well. I got mine on Amazon. This time I'll be stuffing them with half flats instead of the microfiber inserts they come with.
Covers: bummis are pretty tiny. A lot of people say good things about Imagine, but I never tried those. Thirsties size 1 or the NB size are really nice. Rumparooz newborn is nice (but don't get the velcro - it rubs - snaps only). I'd get 6-8 covers.
36 changes should get you enough to wash every other day. But any amount will save cash over not using sposies all the time.
I learned during this time that I hate pockets and ended up with mostly covers/flats for the OS phase. Those worked all the way to when my son PT'd.
there are several threads on this on the CD board - feel free to search and look around there for other suggestions. This is just what I had that worked well.
