So admittedly, this year is a bit lean for us. We are in hyper saving mode and are skipping gifts to/ from each other and are not exchanging with adult sibs.
Kiddo is old enough to really anticipate it this year and is asking for big ticket items (hi, Barbie dream house).
What mid/ lower priced things are on your kid's wish list? So far I have a few board games and some dress up stuff but looking for some smaller things to fill in a bit.
LO wants Legos, Legos, and more Legos. In trying to get more ideas out of him, I started asking category by category (i.e. Do you want any games? Science kits? K'nex?). He is getting a few games that I found veeeery nicely discounted, books (one interactive one for his LeapPad and one "real"/paper), and a few Matchbox cars. I need to pick up a Lego set or two to be his "big" Santa gift. Since the LeapPad book, Matchbox cars, and two of the games will be stocking stuffers, I need to pick up a couple other smallish gifts to be from us, maybe a science kit and I don't know what else. I found some awesome deals here and there throughout the summer and early fall, but not really much lately to help me finish up.

Ds is getting the imaginext super hero flight city as his big gift. He has specifically asked for a robot dog (not sure what route to go for it yet) & the little people musical dancing palace. His other big 'gift' was the TV in his room but that's beyond his level of understanding that it counts lololol Also want to get him the step 2 desk. Hoping to score a used one on the cheap before Christmas which will pair nicely with another item on his list which was craft supplies & the like. I also got him a play doh set from kohls that serves as a mat & storage which is nice for Dh & I. Win win. Not sure what else will be coming.

DS is getting the meccano dinosaur set. That's his big gift. He's also getting some chapter books and a chemistry set. A couple small Lego sets.
His birthday is right before Christmas so it makes it tough. But, with the exception of the dinosaur (that I scored for $50) everything has been less than $20 each. I still have stocking stuffers to get for him but those are all little things too- usually a snow marker, yo-yo, new paints, etc.
Shopkins, splashlings, Lego sets (the smaller ones you can get for less than $20), puppy in my pockets, nom noms, calico critters. She is into all those little tiny toys. Most are fairly inexpensive...the exception being the calico critters.
We got her a some things she didn't ask for. With her birthday being right before Christmas time it gets crazy. I try to give out some of the things she asks for as gift ideas when our family asks.
Yes, DD is so into teeny tiny toys. Last year she was into shopkins but this year she did mention puppy in my pocket - thanks!
I have a few smaller gifts for him but have been waffling on the "big" gift. I got a Magformers set when it was 40% off on Amazon, a crystal growing kit, a Dory Play-doh pack, and some drawing materials for his stocking. I'll probably also get him some socks for his stocking and maybe some other crafty stuff.
DH said he wants to get him a bike but I think we should save that for his birthday in the spring. I also thought he might like a scooter better than a bike (he's just not that into riding things right now).
He's also really into the little tiny figure toys right now. He loves setting them up and doing pretend play with them. So I was thinking he'd really like a dollhouse. I would want to get a nice, gender-neutral color house, and I haven't started looking at all so I'm not sure if that will pan out.
I've also thought about a telescope or microscope but afraid he might not be quite old enough for those yet.

Obviously it varies by kid, but I have been looking at both for my newly 5yo even when I was Christmas shopping last year for him. I figured the trouble-spot would probably be focusing the microscope, so I was especially looking for ones that had one big viewing area instead of the two eyeholes or one that could hook up to a TV screen. I didn't get around to deciding on any model/models though, so not much help other than letting you know the idea of either of those isn't off the wall.

is there like a starter set or smaller sets of all the mini toys you guys mentioned? DS hasn't specified particular interest but I sort of wanna present them to him to see if they peak his interest. I don't think he even knows those things exist. I'm thinking he'd probably like shopkins but then again, I feel like he'd lose tiny toys.
I keep stalking the Barbie Dream house but the cheapest I have seen it is 149😁
I was going through the cartwheel app before my trip to Target and saw they have a 20% off coupon for the Dream House. Not sure what price it is at Target though.

Most of the tiny toys are offered in 2 packs, for a few dollars, you could try that

If you haven't found a dream house yet, you might check craigslist in your area. Perhaps someone nearby is trying to get rid of a gently used one. You could set it up in front of your tree with a giant bow on top.

Thank you!
I actually scooped it up at target with the 20% off cartwheel, thanks to this thread!
I also got her makeup (cheap kiddie makeup) and an Elena of Avalor dress up nightgown.
