Carter's for baby stuff. They almost always have 50% off plus a 20% coupon over $40.
I didn't really care for the kimono shirts...but if you want some I would happily mail you what we have just for the price of shipping.
For winter, we go through at least 1 onesie and 1 fleece sleeper each day sometimes more if they have crazy spit up. At 3 months now I put them in real clothes like 3 times a week. Newborn clothes fit for about 6 weeks and we just grew out of 3 month stuff right at 3 months.

Almost everything I've gotten has been from Carters so far. They have great sales and you can stack coupons with sales. And they have a rewards program so every $75 you spend you get a $10 reward. I always find stuff I like on the clearance rack (usually $3-5 clearance).
I think I'll have more luck actually going to Carters. Maybe this weekend I'll head out after I take a bit of stock of what we have. I was also thinking mostly onesies and sleepers for NB and then pants and long sleeved onesies for 0-3mos....at that point I'm thinking of heading out and buying more once I have a better idea of their sizes. Does that make sense?
I would go there. I have trouble shopping for myself even online but I always find stuff in the store. You can find bigger sizes spring clothes on the clearance rack right now. I aim for like 6-9 months there because I figure I can throw a sweater or long sleeve onesie on them if they end up not being the right size in spring and wear it in winter. I'm sure they'll be moving the winter stuff to clearance soon. They also sell lots of packs of patterned onesies (long and short sleeve) which would be great for early days when you're just at home and they don't need a full outfit. There's an outlet store somewhat close to me I'm planning on hitting up after the holidays.

Also hand-me-downs for the really small stuff. They wear it for so short that there's really no point in buying. Do you have any friends with kids you could drop hints to? I have like 4 boxes of used clothes I still need to go thru. Some of it even has tags on it still. I just go thru and pull out everything I like and doesn't have stains on it (formula stains yuck) and everything else goes back in the box to be returned or donated.

No! All of my friends have boys and/or are planning to have another child soon. But I should hit up some consignment shops as well.
lol I take boy stuff from friends too. I figure they won't know they're dressed in a puppy onesie.
I definitely dress Z in W's hand-me-downs (W is in 6 month clothes mostly, Z is in 3-month). We got most of their clothes from Kohl's on ridiculous clearance + coupon + kohl's cash and are now getting hand-me-downs from my nephew.
We also hated the kimono shirts, so I have a stash stuck away in case my sister ends up having another. (She's de-stashing everything little baby right now)

So Kohls is good? There is one near me. The Target near me had such a disappointing selection.
Ours carries most of what the Carters near us carries, only Kohl's will drop the price of their clearance clothes a lot lower. We are starting to figure out which brands work for our kids (NOT jumping beans - we have tall, skinny babies)
So far I haven't found a regular retail store where I really like the selection. Walmart and Amazon are good for some quick basics. I got sweatpants and plain white onesies for daycare backup clothes for R&G.
Most of my kids' clothes are hand-me-downs from a cousin, consignment finds, Goodwill (my mom has no self control), or Var.age Sale or Craig.slist. Ebay would be even easier than VS or CL since it gets shipped to your house. I'm not too picky about clothes as long as they're clean, in decent condition, and roomy enough that I can put it on them easily (check how stretchy the head hole is). If you're not picky, a quick way to get lots of clothes for a decent price is to find someone selling a clothing lot on VS or Ebay in whatever size you need. I also look for clothes with some stretch and that will never require ironing (usually t-shirt or sweatshirt type materials, including some fleece).
Types of clothes: I'm planning to use footed sleepers day and night for my upcoming LOs, possibly with a onesie underneath if they need more warmth. Small cotton bibs can save outfits when baby spits up just a bit! I ordered another 10-pack of them. I plan to still use footed sleepers 0-3 months (and possibly longer, depending on weather and baby mobility) because I want to keep their feet warm and socks are hard.
Also, buttons suck. They're way too difficult on a wiggly baby. MH likes zippers since he has an arthritic thumb where an old woman kicked him while swimming. I like snaps because I can open a sleeper from the bottom to change a diaper (snaps on the top keep the sleeper on the baby so I don't have to completely undress him/her).
I hated gowns. The elastic at the bottom just seemed too tight. We had one set of kimono shirts for the baby jujutsu gis (black belts included), so I have no opinion on kimono shirts. They seem to be highly recommended and I'm not sure why. They don't seem special to me.
Sleep sacks are awesome if you don't swaddle. R&G used those at night until they started standing. We got Carter's fleece sleep sacks (some used, some new) and just rolled up the sleeves as needed and sometimes wore a onesie underneath if their room was a bit chilly. There are also armless ones (might be some other brand) if you just want to add a blanket-like thing for some extra warmth on top of other clothes. The downside of sleep sacks is you can't strap them into a bouncer or seat or anything.
As far as brands, I find that Jumping Bean runs small, especially for my chunky baby. My mom got a bunch of non-stretchy shorts in 24m size for R and he stopped wearing them when he could still fit in 12m or 18m pants from other brands. The t-shirt type stuff is less problematic since it stretches to fit.
Random weird problem I ran into recently: knit two-piece PJs. One of the sets I got has arms like a Chinese finger trap. The arms barely fit Miss G and she's a petite little girl. If she were chunkier like her brother there would be no hope for getting the shirt on her.

I'm all about Carters as well and have lots of sleep and plays for NB and 0-3. I also got Gerber gowns and hats, they are so lovely for quick diaper changes. I am a member of several area mom swap FB pages and through them have picked up lots of girl and boy newborn and 0-3 clothes for a steal.

I try to be cheap and do the clearance shopping at target carters and kohl's. A lot of what my son lived in was the sleep and play, onesies (summer baby) and the gowns, they made for easier changing diapers. I also tend to hit up the good will for baby clothes, they seem to be in near perfect condition because they grow out of newborn so quickly and is cheap

I liked the kimono shirts for when DD was super mini and still had the umbilical stump. I felt like she was so tiny and squirmy then too that trying to get her in a regular onesie freaked me out.
Love me some Carter's, and I second letting the girls wear boys stuff, they really will not know the difference. Especially if it means free clothes! L wears a lot of J's hand me downs, especially because his pants (that I get from Carter's) are amazing and aren't thin like the girls leggings.
Yes! I much prefer the boys pants to the girls right now. DNW stupid frilly elastic at her ankles, give me a nice smooth, soft hem.
Another vote for Carters here. My twins are living in their zippered, footed sleep and plays or whatever they're called. I also bought a bunch of Gerber tshirts from Amazon, but it's kinda cold for just those now.
As far as types of clothing, I got super frustrated with buttoned outfits. I really don't understand how those haven't been completely replaced by zippered ones. And omg no to actual pants. I tried to get my daughter to wear them with a matching shirt the other night and she ended up in just the shirt and a diaper after about 5 seconds. It was quite the scene. I'm convinced people put pants on babies purely for photo ops, but maybe I just suck at dressing my kids .

I feel like pants got infinitely easier to put on at around the 4 month mark for us. It's actually harder to get them into sleep n plays now at 5 months than a long-sleeve onesie and pants. But as NBs, the sleep n plays (zips or snaps) were all we used!

I hope that's true for us too because babies in pants are freakin' adorable!

+1,000 for Carters. Their sales have been insane! I was there last week and the entire store was 50% off and they sent me a 20% off coupon. I also had $10 in rewards cash. I felt like they were giving the stuff away.
I'm all about ZIPPERED sleep & plays for my littles. I have a feeling this is what they will wear all winter too. I'm guilty of buying snapping ones, but I sort of hate them.
Also, I'm the voice of dissent here, but I love the short sleeve kimono tops for under the sleep & plays. But my babes are still both under 7!lbs. When those are all dirty, I will use a short sleeved onesie for the undershirt.
I had bought a ton of long-sleev onesies, but I find it really difficult to put those under a long sleeve sleep & play. I wish I had bought more short sleeve onesies.
Also, don't buy your Carters at TJMaxx or Marshall's. The prices are better at the Carters store, and you earn rewards.
Also, not sure if you live in a cold weather place, but I had to stock up on hats. I like to have the babes in hats anytime we leave the house.
Where do you find hats that are bigger than the 0-6 month gerber hats but smaller than toddler hats? I have yet to find something to fit my kids' giant heads.

The Gerber hats were stupid small. We took SO MANY HATS from the nursery at the hospital, they were the only ones that fit them well ( I swear the way that knit stretched was magical). Check out Walmarts infant/toddler sizes- my kids have giant heads and can BARELY fit into the 2-4t ones
Born 5lbs each at the end of October, mine wore NB size for 2 or 3 months, FYI. Footed sleep & plays were the only thing I put them in. We got tons of outfits that were only worn once, when someone else dressed them. I prefer snaps (easy diaper changes), MH preferred zippers (I blame man hands). Whoever put buttons on baby clothing is stupid and evil, IMO. Onesies were really awkward & hard to put on when they were tiny, they are so floppy and I hated pulling anything over their heads. And mine had giant heads. I got a pair of kimono style shirts with magnets? Never worn and the magnets were messed up after one wash. At this point I try not to shop until we're close to moving up, we had so much short sleeved stuff that was never worn because it was too cold, and then anytime someone tried to guess at what size they'd be next season they were SO WRONG. I'm a total Carters whore. Do not ever pay more than 50% of their MSRP unless you are desperate- everything goes on sale in a 5 week cycle and there is almost always a 40% off coupon floating around (feel free to ask on here, I always have one). Sign up for rewards. Tell your friends and family to use your rewards number when they shop. OH OH! And they do a grandparent discount on Wednesdays I think? It stacks. Drag them with you (maybe they'll pay!?). I'm not against thrift shopping, in fact I was so disappointed the other day because I have a giant bag of hand me downs that I have to give away because they always use massive amounts of fabric softener. I soaked, washed, soaked, washed over and over and it still makes my daughter break out in hives. Just something to consider. Oh and I totally do Carters online

I have a clothing question....
Do babies wear onesies under everything? Like an undershirt? Like is it plain onesie with snaps underneath sleeper with snaps? Or is that overkill? I understand a onesie when you dress them in a shirt and pants like as an undershirt. But what about sleepers or the swaddle me things.

Another clothing question....
So I know you're supposed to dress babies in what you would wear plus one layer. So I wear pj pants and one of DHs undershirts to bed. Does that mean baby gets a sleeper and a swaddle me/sleep sack? Or just a fleece sleeper?
mustloveerica I'd only dress baby in more than one layer for extra warmth or to keep a diaper on or something utilitarian like that. More layers between me and a diaper change is bad, especially when someone is tired/sick/crabby (me or the baby). I did use a onesie under the swaddle me or sleep sack because it kept the diaper in place (diapers did slide off or unvelcro a couple of times ). Not with footed sleepers, though.
I don't put a onesie under a shirt. Of course, I avoided shirts altogether until recently (post one year) because the onesie stays down to cover baby's belly.

My FTM is showing again.
I think it's preference. I hardly used onesies under Pjs and sleepers etc with DD. Instead she was swaddled a lot in the beginning with a halo sleep sack
mustloveerica: I very rarely layered a onesie. I hated onesies until like 3 months. And then I just used them as a shirt. The plus 1 layer thing is really kind of arbitrary... Last winter (Chicago) I turned the heat up to 70 in our house and spent most of my time in a tank top and yoga pants, put the kids in just a cotton or fleece sleeper. At night, they wore fleece sleepers with a cotton swaddle- I wore my tank top yoga pant new mom uniform and had a light blanket.
Our pediatrician told us she'd rather our kids be a little chilly than too warm- overheating is a major SIDS risk. Old ladies will lecture the crap out of you, and everyone will obsess about them having cold hands or feet. Newborns, and especially preemies, have immature circulatory systems and cold hands or feet do not mean they are too cold. You should judge their temp by the back of their necks, which should be warm but not sweaty. My kids are hot boxes, so it was a CONSTANT battle with other people overdressing my kids
Sorry to hijack your thread @wineandcupcakes! I didn't think it was necessary to start another for little questions lol.
No apologies necessary...hijack away!!
ETA: I was also trying to figure out this exact thing! I have a cart full of Carters clothes of NB and 3mo sizes and I was trying to determine how to go about buying things not knowing their exact size and with the season change they will hit at this time!
Buy everything, leave the tags on, RETURN RETURN RETURN!!!
But worst case, they swim in 0-3m clothing for a while

I only put a onesie under a sleeper when it's chilly and they're wearing it to bed. For regular daytime, nah. Call me lazy, but ain't nobody got time for that.
