I'm still waking up with her 1-2x per night, but she's actually eating those times. I'm not really sure that it's even worth it to try to sleep train her since she generally nurses to sleep.
My kids all ate 1-2x a night at this age, sleep trained or not. None of them nursed to sleep by their own choice past the newborn phase.
Yes, for a while she wasn't doing it, but she's gotten back into it over the last month.
Me (30) MH (32) Dx: MFI (low all the things) M. 10/11. TTC Since 01/14 IUI#1-3(Letrozole + Trigger) = BFN Second Opinion. Changed RE's. IVF 09/15 Long Lupron 12R/9M/8F, Transferred 1=BFN. 4 frosties. FET #1 12/15 Transferred 1 (3 still on ice)
Right now H is out and both girls were sleeping. I tried to shower, and I heard the baby was crying when I turned the water off. I took it as an opportunity for some practice sleep training. Instead of leaping into her room all dripping wet I actually got dressed and dried off before going in there. I wanted to see if she would settle at all. About 6 minutes crying and, no, she definitely didn't settle.
I know I need to do something because she sleeps like 2 hours at the most right now. With DD1 we tried Ferber (several times) and it was just the worst. We never made progress. I am dreading sleep training this time...

Re: night weaning - DS's pediatrician told us he doesn't need to eat in the MOTN at all anymore. I don't think it's fair to cut that cold turkey though, so I'd just like to get us down to two feedings a night, since that's all I think he actually needs. Whenever he wakes up about 2 hours after a feeding ended, he just seems to suck a couple of times and then go back to sleep, so I don't think he's waking due to hunger.
Anyways, after 3 weeks of sleep training (during which DS would STILL wake up a couple of times before midnight and would fuss for several minutes before going back to sleep), he FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY started sleeping longer stretches! Two nights ago he slept 8pm-11:55pm, and last night he slept 8:15-12:40pm! I know several others whose babies have been sleeping better than this for months now, but for us, this is such a huge relief! He's also seemed to be SO much happier and less fussy during the day - I think he's getting more quality sleep at night without eating every 2 hours.

Any suggestions for sleep training naps? I'm losing my mind over here. I spend 30 min plus getting him down for a nap and he spends less than 10 min sleeping. And this after his sleep cues start.

Oh no, that sounds awful. I've never done it, but I think ST for naps is a good idea... I still have to spend a few minutes getting my toddler to sleep for naps. Wish I would have trained her earlier!

We did with ds1 and are now doing it with ds2. Do you have a few days where you can be consistent? We did night time and daytime in the same place (crib) to keep it familiar. For both night and nap, we'd put him in his crib and then do Ferber checks at 2,5,10 min until he fell asleep by himself. Daytime, if he woke after a short time we would keep him in there to try to fall back asleep on his own.
We have had a few days of being out but will now be homebound since he has pink eye. So, we will work on naps.
With ds1, I liked the 2, 3, 4 schedule. Wake up in the am - 2 hrs later go for nap. After wake up, be awake for 3 hrs then naptime. Wake up from nap, Awake for 4 hrs and then bedtime. I'll see how this goes with ds2 - he has been on 3 naps.

I am home during the day to try this. Thank you! How lo g did it take him to fall asleep on day 1? I'm trying to avoid the Ferber method, but after today I'm will to try anything.

With ds2 I didn't want to do Ferber either, but at 6 months, it at been 3.5 months of him only sleeping on me or dh in 45 min (at most) increments, and I was done.
With ds1, at nighttime he was falling asleep on his own without crying by night 3. Wake ups diminished as well. Naps took a little longer. I can't remember exactly, but it did eventually work. Ds1 fell asleep anytime we were in the car, so it was super hard trying to run any errands without him passing out and ruining the schedule.

I wanted to ST for naps too. DS is able to put himself back to sleep in MOTN and falls asleep on his own at daycare in a bouncy seat. But naps at home usually only happen if being held. Super annoying. DD still is a terrible napper and I'd like to avoid a repeat. I'm thinking I'll ST around 6 months but will still follow this thread.

DS sleeps wonderfully at night, only waking to eat once or twice, sometimes not at all. He's 6.5 months and I thought I was lucky because his naps were decent. Then the holidays hit and we had friends and family in and out of our house for 3 weeks. Now his naps are all over the place.

Skip sleep cues. They are unreliable at this age. Pick wake times for 3 or 2 naps (LO is over 6 mo., right? Could need either one). Put down at those wake times. Leave in crib for an hour for first two naps regardless of if LO is sleeping.
The leave for an hour assumes LO already falls asleep on his own at bedtime and to start naps. If not at bed always do that first. It is easier. Then after 2 weeks of bed you can do independent sleep to start nap. Then nap train by leaving.

You can address nap start times ASAP.
He's about 6.5 months (5 months adjusted). He does go down well at night, it doesn't take much. I just leave him in his crib for an hour? Even if he's crying the whole time? I tried CIO at a nap time today and he was screaming his head off 10 min in and I had to pick him up. I couldn't let him scream like that. I honestly felt like a horrible person.

With DD3 I settle her after 5 ish minutes of crying, but return to her crib. She gets the memo, goes back to sleep, and wakes up much happier than if I got her up.
That said my older two could not nap longer than40 minutes until 6.5 months. I rolled with it after trying to nap train a couple of times each. I also never had them cry to fall asleep at nap. Once they were sleep trained at night they just learned.
You are not a horrible person for giving your kid time to learn or relearn the skill of good sleep. Even if it feels hard. But you are also not a horrible person if you decide not to do it or to do it another way.

I've seen people say sleep cues are unreliable. Why is that? Wouldn't he be better able to recognize he's tired as he gets older? I mean, I yawn and rub my eyes when I'm tired...!

In my kids' case it is because they get tired out of habit at wake times that are too short for their age, then have a hard time falling or staying asleep. Once you push them to the new schedule for 3 or 4 days the sleep cues move too as the habit changes.
Once LO is on 2 and then 1 nap solidly things stabilize so much.
Interesting, I've been following DD's sleep cues but lately she's been acting tired after like an hour of awake time which seems too short, and ends in her taking 4 really short naps.
I plan to write the longest post ever, sorry. O is 6 months old in 2 weeks. She is a little angel all day, very happy and super active army crawling all over the house. (You'd think this would tire her out!) She is a great napper. I nurse to sleep for naps and it takes 10 minutes usually. Then I put her in her crib. Her morning and noon nap are 1.5-2 hours. Then she naps again in the afternoon, about 45 min to an hour. *I still wrap up her arms because it zonks her out quickly, and otherwise she'll grab at me instead of sleeping. I am afraid this is a big problem.
Ok but the nighttime..... Ugh. Both kids get a bath at 6:30. Then O gets a bottle from dad while big sister gets in bed. At 7 I start putting baby to bed. I loosely wrap up her arms and nurse to sleep, she goes into crib. Then she wakes up every 45 min to 2 hours all. night. long. I nurse back to sleep (problem, I know). Generally by 2 or 3am I am so tired that I just sleep on the couch with her, she side nurses. This is killer lately because of biting and sore nipples and it's not working for me anymore. Up at 6:30ish because that's when her sister wakes up and I have to go get her.
So..... What should I do?? Right now I think I need to set certain nursing times at night, even just to give my boobs a break. Didn't some people do that here? Maybe go all out and stop wrapping her arms and just CIO at bedtime? I hate this option, but at night when I'm going through this I am starting to feel like it's the only option. Help.

You can either just address bedtime or do bedtime and set feeding cut offs (say after 6+ and then 3+ and 3+ hours maybe?) or do bedtime first then feeding cut offs. The latter is what Sleepeasy Solution supposedly recommends. The former every other sleep source I know off.
You don't have to do Ferber. Pick Up/Put Down and Shush Pat from Secrets of the Baby Whisperer or the Sleep Lady Shuffle from Good Night Sleep Tight (CIO with you in the room) take longer but can work. Extinction CIO is an option too. You can pick a way that matches your family.

annbuhdan - I had been up every 1-2hrs with my DS all night long before we sleep-trained, so I feel your pain. I followed the plan/advice from the Precious Little Sleep blog & troubleshooted my routine on their Facebook group, and that's what worked for us. In a nutshell, CIO at bedtime, and for the first 4-5 hours after bedtime (if your LO wakes up then, which she probably will at first). This will hopefully help break the nurse to sleep association at bedtime. For the first few weeks you can then feel free to do whatever you were doing before after that 4-5hr cutoff time, even if that means nursing back to sleep each time. With my DS, he began sleeping from 8-1am, and I would feed him then and when he woke next at 4/4:30am. We're up for that day by 7/7:30. Since he no longer has that nurse to sleep association, he'll move around a little when he's in the light part of a sleep cycle but just stick his thumb in his mouth and go back to sleep unless he's truly hungry. The only thing is, your DD should be unswaddled for all this. You're probably close to needing to do that anyway. Oh, and on PLS they recommend working at nighttime first before trying to improve naps, although in my case DS started going down more easily for naps almost immediately.
Interesting, I've been following DD's sleep cues but lately she's been acting tired after like an hour of awake time which seems too short, and ends in her taking 4 really short naps.
This has been my last week and a half. Until leading to the nap breakdown yesterday.
I kept DS up for 2 hours this morning and he went right down for his nap, put him down drowsy and not a peep out of him. We'll see how long he sleeps. Fingers crossed for at least 45 min.
hummingbird125 How did your LO do with this plan? It sounds pretty much like what I had in mind.
I am nervous because she has never done anything even close to drowsy but awake...
annbuhdan - turns out she can self soothe even without her paci and the pedi's suggestion to start solids has improved her gas. So I have not needed to yet. Current plan is to wait until she shows signs of readiness to night wean and do anything then. Until then she typically is up twice a night to eat and one random wake between 9 and 11 that I cannot figure out.

Update? How did his nap go?
So, he took a 35 min nap, but he hung out in his crib playing with his wubbanub for about 10 min. After yesterday, this is progress, especially considering how well he went down for the nap.

Im lurking the thread since E is just behind the August babies and wanted to recommend the blog (and Facebook group) Precious Little Sleep. It's CIO/Ferber oriented but is fantastic for real-world advice and tips for sleep training. www.preciouslittlesleep.com/cry-it-out/
We did Ferber with my son and while it took a while with him (he kept getting ear infections that set us back) he became a champion sleeper (until recently but there are other issues with being a 2.5 year old causing that..).

Umm... You ladies are amazing! DS woke up after 35 min, as usual, and started playing. He then put his pacifier back in and went back to sleep. Apparently, he just needed a schedule with longer wake times. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You nay have just saved my sanity!
I so hope this sticks!
Eta: he's been out for 2 hours! Please tell where to send all my money for the advice!

Yeah, I went back to 2 hour awake times too and she went down for her naps much easier. They're still only 30-40 min though.
