When I'm sorting I have different piles. Keep Garbage Sell-high quality items like toys and clothes. At the end of the session it all gets posted on my fb buy and sell for a week or brought to Once Upon a Child and then gets donated. Donate-boxed or bagged immediately and put directly in the car, don't use clear bags because if you see the item again you may try and talk yourself into keeping it. Give away/return- items that belong to others or hand me downs. Bagged, labelled and put in the car. If they don't want it it goes to donations.
Just say no to yard sales unless you have lot of high quality items like furniture and sports equipment.

I struggle with paper clutter. XH made me just paranoid enough about identity theft that I can't just recycle shit with my name and address on it--which is actually a wise move that I don't fault him for but jaysus it's a lot of stuff. It's too much to shred and I don't want to buy a shredder because it's one more thing. I have a fireplace but it makes such an ashy mess.
I need to price out those places you can take all your shredding.
We just got a burn barrel. There's so much stuff we get rid of, and it's way faster than shredding.
Also, some companies have incineration days where you can take and they burn for you.
I find that buying used kids clothing makes it easier to toss/Donate. Once it's gone through 2-3 kids it has served it's purpose, especially if I only paid a couple of dollars.
I need this in my life. I have to climb to get to the back of my closet right now. There's a dresser in the back and I have no clue what's in it because I can't get to it. Too many clothes, books, other random crap. And four huge bins of papers that have been collecting dust for 10 years or so.
First world problem: Do you have the kindle version or the hardback? If I'm going to be flipping back and forth through it, I think I might rather a paper version. Or does that go against the Kon Mari way?

I'm going to need to know what's in that dresser. K?
I read the book a few years ago and am due to reread. I do fold my clothes shirts and pants so they stand on end now, but I do not fold my bras and underwear.
Does anyone actually unpack their purse every night like she does? I remember thinking that was absolutely nuts. Granted every few weeks I have to do a giant purge of random receipts and toys that end up in there, so maybe not the worst idea.
And is the sequel worth reading? She has a kid now, so maybe she will come out with tips for kids stuff, which is my downfall.
Paper clutter is my downfall as well. We have a file cabinet in the den that will need to be sorted and got rid of when we move. We're downsizing from a 4 bed house with attic and basement storage to a 2 bed condo. So shits gotta go

I bought the ebook and use the bookmark and highlights function

We do unpack DS's backpack M-F every night. He has homework in there and a folder that has communication from the teacher.
I bought a smaller wallet so no room for receipts so I do take receipts out more often now like 2-3 times a week. I don't usually have extra stuff in my purse so it's usually receipts. Otherwise if I have a lot of stuff to bring to and from work I have another bag for that. We have a restaurant spike for receipts so it easy to take it out and put it on the spike.

If you are using it- it doesn't go against it. When you are done unless it sparks joy then donate the book or pass it on.

Your condo/Kondo lifestyle is going to be so incredibly Maintenence free...you are going to have so much more time for activities!
I know I'm really excited! There's going to be less cleaning, less crap, no house maintenance! Plus on site gym and pool and I'm going to be working from home. MUCH. EXCITE!
I do not unpack my purse every day. The stuff in my work purse doesn't change and I don't have time in the morning to run around gathering all the stuff I took out of it the day before. My purse does have its own spot in the house though

+1
I keep everything in my purse so I know where everything I want in it is..I don't know where I would even put my wallet, since it belongs in my purse.
One of this biggest aha! moments for me with her book was not to tackle things by room, rather by item. So take all the books from everywhere in your house and then sort them.
Speaking of which, I'm off to go through my kids art supplies which are taking over my basement, despite the fact that we don't really do arts and crafts at home.
You guys have inspired me to read this book and use it as my guide. Any advice on what to do with kids clothing from A1 I'm saving for A2? Just labeled bins? What about things I'm holding on to for friends, like maternity clothes or baby clothes? I have a good friend here and if/when she gets pregnant again I have all kinds of shit for her. Do I just drop it off ASAP and make it her problem?
For kids clothing I only keep it if I would buy it again in it's current condition. Anything slightly stained or worn I get rid of.
I store it by item and size. So a bin of pajamas and ordered by size. I find it easier this way because sizing is off by brand and 6m stuff actually fits at 3m or whatever.
I offload immediately. If they don't want it donate it.
Just checked it out at the library. My H is the opposite of a hoarder so I'm sure he'll be on board. My closet needs tackled and so do the toys.
Not willing to give up baby stuff quite yet as I'm still holding out hope for another one, but that's just the clothes and larger items. These toys can go!

I didn't open this thread for a couple of days because I assumed Kon Mari was the name of a Star Wars character or something. Clearly out of touch with pop culture on all fronts! Anyway, I have 2 days home by myself the week after x-mas and I am going to purge so much stuff! Thanks for the thread and ideas.
For baby stuff, I was holding on to stuff incase we have another. But it's not certain we will and even if we did then we'd have to have another boy at the same time of year for all the clothes to be reused. I dropped 2 years worth of baby clothes at the charity shop yesterday and have been selling gear online for a while. Some stuff I keep for my sister and give it to her as soon as possible.

I never unpack my purse - who has time for that?? Nope. But I do go through my bag regularly to toss receipts / crap like that. Don't want to rifle through a bunch of garbage to locate my wallet.
Yes I do the same. Probably about once a week I go through it during a quiet time at work and take out all the junk from my purse and wallet
The first time I did a major overhaul I was disgusted by all the clothing I had. I barely wore any of it.
It really hit home when we tried to pack for vacation to open our suitcase to find it full of clothing from when we had moved into the house. I was pregnant when we moved so I didn't fit into it, but that fact that I didn't even know that all of those clothes were even missing gave me a new sense of urgency.
I haven't read the book yet but I love a good purge. I need to reorganize the storage area and it will happen before the Christmas decorations get put away. We remodeled our basement this summer and got rid of a ton of stuff last year. Now it is time for round 2. One of my biggest problems is that I have an almost 5 year age gap between my middle and youngest daughter and that makes for a lot of bins of clothes.
One of the things I struggle with getting rid of is old computer crap. I have 2 laptops, 1 desktop, 2 printers, and a keyboard that needs out of my house. Do I just dump them?
adelbert I am actually pretty good at only saving the stuff I love and is in good shape. Leggings, tee shirts etc all gets donated when DD2 is done with it. I save all pajamas though because those get better with age. At least as she gets older there will be less and less stuff because my older girls wear things longer so there isn't as much to save.

For printers & keyboards, check what your towns electronics recycling program entails. Ours requires you bring to the dump & put in the special electronics recycling area. I'm not sure about CPUs / laptops & how to wipe them of personal info first.
Looked it up and my city doesn't recycle electronics so they go to the landfill. I'm struggling with how to wipe the hard drives, I just have no idea

If you don't need anything off the computer, could you just open it up and destroy it?
