I purged books yesterday. I had a giant gift bag full and another giant bag full of clothes. Not bad for just spending 30 minutes tossing stuff. Dropped it all off at Goodwill today.
This is a lot different than how I normally get rid of stuff. Usually I'm all over the place. Like my current box that I have out for donation (truck coming on dec 28), is such a random assortment. A tablecloth, some shirts, toys, a few books, a charger, and a few picture frames.
I'm excited to try this new version. Now my question:
First on the list is clothes. When you guys are doing this, are you just doing your clothes? Or are you also doing the kids clothes also? I'm not touching mh's, he can do that himself. Will get him to download the app too haha
I did just my clothes, but that includes shoes, purses, coats etc. I put all my kids clothes in boxes as soon as he outgrows it and then let my sister take what she wants when she visits. I just took all the leftover stuff to value village after storing 2 years worth but in future those boxes will be going straight out the door
tLex maybe you'll become Insta-famous and and start a blog $$$$
I wouldn't be mad.
I am mad that I missed the first ever KonMari consultant training session that started 4 days ago in SanFran. I might try to go to the next one. DH is really supportive.
Omg do it! You could make so much bank if you were the first in the city!
Ughhhhh I'm dying to do more today but I have to wait for MH! He's going to do his clothes tonight and I told him I'd help. (He has like no clothes as it is so this is not really a big job). In a beautiful perfect world he'd agree to start on books tonight but I don't think it's going to happen. I have to remind myself though that getting his buy in is a big deal and in the long run its better.
I might go look at some closet organizing stuff today. I at least need a new shoe storage system. I hate my current shoe rack with a passion and it had been the undoing of my closet many times.
Last preChristmas project today I want to attack MH half of the office while he is gone. Also, both bathrooms. Bathrooms aren't too bad, but still could use going through. Oh and my nightstand!
And I actually got rid of the stuff, didn't just move it all to another location like I normally would lol
Are you MH? He tells me he's tidied a room but in reality all he's done is gather the crap and moved it to another room. So i guess he has tidied one space but now another one is full of junk.
One thing I know I cannot Konmari is photo albums. I have a few from childhood and some my mum and MIL made of the family tree. I love flicking through them sometimes and I know I wouldn't get the same joy but putting all those photos online.
A few years ago my mum cleaned out her attic and shipped (yes shipped across an ocean!) about 7 packing boxes of all my childhood crap. Last Christmas I took a week off work and tackled all those boxes, i have hardly any of it left, nearly all of it went to value village or the dump. There was so much junk, like why on earth would she think i wanted to keep a few polly pockets that were missing polly!!
My public library will only take book donations of books printed in the past 5 years. This seems a little picky for fiction that is in excellent condition. It's not like the content is going to be outdated.

That is odd. Is there a senior center or an adult learning center that will take them?
it is odd, i'm going to take the box down there anyway because i'm not going to sort through them and look at all the publish dates. Anything they don't take I'll take to the food bank for their used goods shop. I'm guessing the senior centre isn't going to want my baby and pregnancy books. My city is weird
another example of how weird my city is - last year i called the women's shelter about dropping of clothes (women's, maternity and baby) and they told me they weren't taking any more donations and I'd have to wait until next month because their closet was full.

Me too. Photos bring me immense amount of joy. My goal with kon Mari is to organize them better and make sure they are in a place where I can access them easier.
same. I love my photo albums. When MH clears out these books and I've got some shelf space I want to have a spot to display them where I can get to them easily. They bring me so much joy.
We don't have a Babies R Us... does anyone know somewhere else that takes car seats? I'd like to do the BRU trade-in event and get another convertible, but BRU is an hour away & I don't know when the next trade-in event will be. ETA: its a bucket seat
If it's in good condition and never been in an accident etc then you could sell it online. I know it's the one thing everyone says don't buy used but the reality is people are always going to be trying to find cheaper car seats.

You could try your local hospital. Ours has small bookshelves throughout the halls with a cashbox. They ask for at least $0.25 per book but it is an honour system thing. It is a passive way to generate cash donations.
My cabinets look fantastic. I have one that's entirely empty now actually.
For those that are working on papers-- DS1 gets SO MUCH STUFF from school. A lot of it gets automatically recycled/tossed, but some it I feel like I should save. Does anyone have a system for saving the sentimental stuff or a way to release me from my mom guilt?
I take a photo, have a Flickr album for each school year, and recycle the hard copy.

This is what came out of two tiny closets and a small dresser. 6 trash bags and some assorted junk. I'm amazed. I honestly thought we were already pretty pared down and wouldn't have much to get rid of.
