I know it's early, but we're already starting the financial planning discussions in this household. I only get six weeks short term disability through work. I am due at the end of July and really wanted to take off through the end of the year. I just can't see myself going back in November/December right before the holidays and all the emotions of returning to work- plus it's the busiest time of the year at work so I know I would hate it. However after sitting down and mapping out the finances, it's going to be really tough to swing that much time off work with our budget. So now my anxiety about maternity leave is already at new levels. What is everyone else planning for leave and how long are you planning to take off?

I'm not sure because I feel a little bad since this will be my second mat leave in 2 years, but my company offers 16 weeks unpaid and I'll probably take it all again. I get 6 weeks of partial pay through SDI and then another 6 through CAPFL. We were able to make it work between my PTO and the partial pay last time.
Something to consider for you is Fmla which just protects your job for 12 weeks (if your job applies; my company is too small). Though you could take unpaid for those extra 6 weeks, that wouldn't get you through the end of the year and going past the 12 weeks could give your employer grounds for letting you go. It is worth talking to your boss about it.

ker9171 - I agree that you need to think about FMLA. Past the protected 12 weeks, they don't have to hold your job for you.
I actually resigned back in Oct. (before I knew I was KU - not that it would have made a difference). I agreed to stay on thru the end of Mar. (a decision I regret). I'm just paying down credit cards thru Mar., and we should be ok with DH income. I didn't work thru my pregnancy and up until DS was 10 months old, and I love being a SAHM, so that's what we're going for here.
Sorry forgot to add that I live in a state that has a state leave plan of additional 12 weeks job protection so I have technically 24 weeks of job protection.
I work for my H so I'll be taking off work indefinitely. I work from home anyways, so I'll just be doing odd small things here and there. I can't wait to cut back on all the time and just spend time with little squish!
I've kind of been worrying about maternity leave too. I get 6 weeks through short-term disability (2 weeks have to be paid with PTO, then gets paid at 60%). After that I have the option to use two more weeks of PTO if I want to. I need to talk to my boss about working from home though, because there's no way I can take 6 weeks and just be off-the-grid.
I need to talk to HR because I'm at a new job since having my girls. I get 6 weeks at 60% through SDI but am unsure beyond that and don't know how my PTO will work with it. I didn't have benefits through my last job and so all of my last two leaves I took completely unpaid.
I'm a teacher and we have the 12 weeks FMLA. It's unpaid unless you have some vacation or sick time. You can take a year leave of absence and be guaranteed your position.
I will be quitting and after a while, subbing part time.

Most short term disability bans you from doing work. It's illegal to work on FMLA. This is to protect employees from getting coerced into doing work when they are sick or injured. Just throwing it out there because they need to be able to function without you.
I'm hoping to take my full 12 weeks. I have one paid week of parental leave, 5 weeks of SDI and a small amount of vacation. I should also be able to take my sick time but I'm not sure about that yet... DH is saving up so we can pay the bills during this time!

Agree - not sure what your line of work was but my company actually shuts down all my access to computer systems when i was on LOA last time, so even if I wanted to work, I couldn't. Also I didn't want to, haha.

I know you're technically not supposed to work, but 6 weeks of not doing my job at all would have some pretty crappy repercussions. I'm sure I can find a good balance without letting things fall apart.
I'm a teacher too so I'm taking the 12 weeks of FMLA hopefully. I can use sick days too but I've heard that if your leave starts over summer break, the whole thing is unpaid. I have to check with HR though.

With DS I was able to take an entire year unpaid off with my job being held, but I took 4 months and went back PT. Wanted to be SAHM so I resigned but then was hired again in a different position that allows me a lot more flexibility. So I am 99% sure this job does not permit me to take maternity leave, but I am able to not work for an extended amount of time and be okay. I will see how it goes and probably work a Saturday here or there until 2018 when I will have a more concrete idea of childcare.
Last time I took 20 weeks, but only the first 8 or so were paid (fully). Then my H took 12 weeks unpaid. We loved it and are going to try to do it again. This time around it will be more difficult to take that much time off of work since we'll be in the middle of a big project, though.
We have to consider finances though. We may need to pull DD from daycare during those months (she's 2), because it's $$$.
I'm worried about childcare costs for DD too. I hope to put her into PT daycare or preschool by 18 mo, but I don't want to lose our nanny. I don't know if I can afford to pay her during my leave while only getting 55% pay. We haven't figured that part out yet.

I am a full time student and not working so it will be a little different for me. I will be on summer break when baby is born but the fall semester starts in mid August so I will only get 3 or 4 weeks after baby is born. I am hoping to take mostly online classes so I can be home with the baby as much as possible.
I have 5 weeks STD paid at 80%, and will have almost 5 weeks vacation saved, for a total of 10 weeks.
I'm playing with the idea of taking two weeks unpaid.
I went back after 11 weeks with DD and it worked out well. I was a nervous wreck about it, but it actually helped my mental state (severe ppd/ppa).
I took two weeks unpaid with DS but I did them at different times so the missing half paychecks weren't so noticeable for my budget. I realize it's still the same amount of money but it felt easier with them split up.
I just found out that an in-home daycare our friends use and LOVE will have an opening when O is 6 weeks, which makes me so much more comfortable with going back to work after 6 weeks. We're going to meet her on Saturday but it would be great if we could get a spot with her.
I will take a year I think. My company does a 17 top up but after that we will be down to 55% of my salary for the rest of the year. We host international students in our spare bedroom and will do that to help cover the deficit.
