For DS1, he was a grad student and got parental leave for the full semester. He then had an arrangement with his advisor to go out 1-2 days a month and stayed home with DS1 until he was almost 10 months and we enrolled him in daycare
This time around, he gets whatever PTO he has saved up, so he'll take about two weeks. He could get FMLA, but we can't afford for both of us to be without pay. He does have a special schedule at work so he works 7:30-4:30/5 for 9 days then gets every other Friday off.

He doesn't specifically get time off because of the birth. But he saved a lot of his vaca time from this year so he will take two weeks of vacation starting the day the girls are born or the day I'm induced (whichever happens first). He'll have another week left to use later in the year so he doesn't have to blow it all at once. His work is also pretty flexible with working from home so he may work from home a few days if I'm feeling overwhelmed.

Because he's in a residency program, my H only gets one week of vacation per quarter. So his Q2 (or Q3 if we go really late) vacation week will be his only leave. Thankfully other residents' wives have had babies or are also pregnant, so they are very good at being flexible and starting the leave whenever the birth occurs. The last one to have a baby in September started his on a Thursday and they gave him through the next weekend, so H is hoping if we have the same experience he will also get a little extra time. There's one more resident whose wife is due before us (next month) so we'll see what happens with his leave.

He's eligible for unpaid FMLA. He can take his PTO or flex his hours too. Not sure what he'll do yet. Last baby was born during holiday season so he had some built in time off and used a combination of PTO and gifted time off to take a few weeks here and there.

DH is starting a new job today so he won't qualify for FMLA. He gets 1 week paid paternity leave and up to 2 weeks of paid vacation time for a total of 3 weeks. They have unlimited vacation up to 2 weeks at a time pending approval of his boss. He also can work from home sometimes so he may try to do that a bit.

He gets 6 weeks paid FMLA and his PTO. He'll take a week off after the baby is here, then go back for a couple of weeks, then take his 6 weeks of FMLA.
H runs his own business so we are trying to get a sense of what he would do. For now, we are thinking he'd take two weeks off (and maybe going into the office once or twice to check in) and he wouldn't have to be totally off the grid. He will probably work from home a bunch more after that but we'll probably play it by ear. We are lucky that his schedule is flexible.

Technically, no. But his work likes him so they're allowing him to take a couple days. I wish it meant he got to take time off his externship, too, but alas. So he got today and tomorrow off and may be able to take Thursday and Friday but he's not sure.

So I read all the links on this and I'm a little confused. Is this paid through the state or my employer? Because if it's my employer they'll fight it tooth and nail. And since I'm untenured and rocking the boat I would not be the least bit surprised if they dumped me over something like this since they're strict as fuck about how and what they'll pay someone for maternity leave.
I'll definitely have to talk to my MIL about this. This is totally her area of expertise.
I really hate that the US just doesn't have its shit together and have some type of mandated leave. Like how are we one of the most powerful countries in the world but we refuse to pay a woman time to heal after pushing a human being from her body? Shit makes zero sense.

If he's already checked, ignore me, but I would look into whether or not he actually continues to accrue PTO while on leave under FMLA.

This was my case as well. If I'm not physically receiving a paycheck, I didn't accrue the time for that period. This time, I only accrue if I work 3 (I think it's three) days of the pay period or more, not if I receive a paycheck

I'll have been employed 13 months when baby comes so I doubt time would count against me. I just know if my district has to contribute financially at all they will attempt to deny the claim until they're blue in the face.

Yeah, this. I don't believe we have STD. I've never had it through a school system. Generally they tell you if you might want it someday to buy your own policy, like Aflac or something similar. But I'll ask my MIL, she would know. She does this kind of stuff for a living.
