DD's school is making big comments about dropping her IEP come triennial time this spring. Her current IEP is only for articulation b/c she hasn't had formal testing since she was 3 and her expressive lnguage was appropriate at that time. She is now meeting her articulation goals at n age appropriate level.
However, she is 6 now and still cannot construct sentences properly and it is driving me crazy that I bring it up every IEP meeting and it is rarely addressed. She cannot ask questions. She now uses question words occasionally, but when a question does not require a question word "Can I have dessert?" she uses a declarative sentence with a question lilt instead. "I can have dessert?". In addition, she drops less important words in sentences, generally only uses present tense, and while she picks somewhat appropriate pronouns, they aren't always quite right: "Him going over there." She generally sounds like English is her second language but now with correct pronunciation, lol.
I have listed this all before and it gets noted in "parent concerns" on the IEP. We did get question words pushed in to goals last year, but that was all that was addressed.
Does this type of language have a name other than straight expressive language, and how do I push for it being addressed? She cannot hold conversations like other kids her age, and it isn't just because she is uncomfortable.
Can you have her re-evaluated by a SLP? If the school district won't maybe one through a private practice? And then bring their report to the school?
She HAS a school SLP who she spends an hour with every week.
The SLP speaks English as a second language and also sometimes drops words, so IdK if she notices when DD does. DD has an appt for an indpendent comprehensive eval, because we have other concerns too, but it isn't until after her meeting.
Right, but it seems like school SLP is maybe not right on top of things. And also it sounds like maybe school SLP had not done a formal evaluation in a long time. I thought they would do formal evaluations yearly? But I guess I was wrong, which is why I had suggested an outside SLP- I did not word it exactly right though in my first answer.
Good to know your DD has another evaluation coming up. Too bad it is after the meeting.
Since she's up for her re-eval she should be tested for speech AND language. If you do not agree with the speech and language evaluation, please say so at the Team Meeting. You are a part of her Team. The school SLP should be aware of your concerns. In addition, sometimes the language concerns that a parent has aren't picked up on standardized testing because it is just a snapshot of what the child did that day. Please talk to the school SLP and ask her if she will do a language sample which is more comprehensive.
