BabyStandish thunderstorms freak me out and I've been in TX my whole life! Really when we lose power and have a tornado warning it's worse. Plus our house doesn't have an interior room on the ground level either, so we have to huddle in the 1/2 bath with our 2 cats... which is on an outside wall but our only option.
I don't let our cats outside, it's too dangerous in our neighborhood, there are a few feral cats in the neighborhood (2-3 which hang out in our yard frequently) which I don't mind but I mostly want to bring them inside and feed and snuggle them.
I have an outside cat. It showed up as a stray. I took it to the vet, had it fixed, got vaccines and took it back home. I do not want animals in my house. DH feeds her every night on the back patio but she'll never be indoor. I didn't choose to have an animal but since she showed up hungry, I couldn't turn her away.
I want a smoothie so bad today. It's storming pretty bad and I don't want to leave for one. And the closest place to my work is 15 min drive. I'd pay for delivery if I could..
setsuna17 one of the bigger "better" hospitals is "baby friendly". I'm refusing to go there because of that and the fact that it's a catholic hospital.
I guess my UO is two fold: I don't agree with the term baby friendly- if it really was "baby friendly," they'd encourage the mom to do what is best for the baby. I also don't agree with catholic hospital systems in general when it comes to women's health. I know there's a lot that would put the woman first in dire situations but the horror stories of women not being able to do what they need to do because "pro life" turned me completely off them.

BabyStandish and icedtea, I like cruises only because I feel like I can disconnect better on a cruise than on any other vacation. But 'm very prone to seasickness so I don't go on many cruises. I really thought I would freak out a bit the first time being in the middle of nowhere with no land but it was oddly freeing. Also, the best sleep I ever had was on a cruise with an inside cabin - no windows and a curtain you could pull at the end of the bed so it was pitch black. It was awesome.
ETA: I live close to one port and within driving distance to 3 others so cruises are cheap vacations for me. I would not fly somewhere just to go on a cruise. Unless it's Alaska - I really want to do an Alaskan cruise.

hpnegirl, I am against Catholic hospitals because there are so many of them. I saw a story on them and in some areas, the only option is a Catholic hospital. They won't do any kind of birth control, so no tubal ligations, and the fact that many will automatically put the unborn baby's life before the mother just puts me off.
I agree you can be pro-choice without wanting to have an abortion yourself. Kinda like you can be pro gay marriage and not want to be in a gay marriage. People should have the right to choose.
Our hospital rooms in with babies. I agree it would have absolutely sucked if DH wasn't there with me. I could barely move after my csection. We had one crappy nurse when it came to breastfeeding. DS kept falling asleep while feeding and she wanted us to pinch him to keep him awake. No thanks.
I hate the whole "breast is best" because it is at a point where you feel like a failure if you can't or choose not to.
I don't think I could do a cruise. We took a ferry from Athens to Santorini and I hated being on the water not being able to see land.
BabyStandish I also loooove storms. And Twister is one of those movies for me that if it's on tv I need to watch it. Love. But I'm also not in a tornado prone area so that makes them way less scary. And I'm glad you're feeling better after yoga.
I also felt very bullied into breastfeeding. I planned to do it, but it was so so painful for me. Like...I dug my heels into the bed or ground every time C tried to eat. I cried so so many tears. I literally looked at the clock and dreaded the two hour mark. This was all while I was still in the hospital. Every nurse I called for help just took my boob and put it in C's mouth. Like that's great for this feeding, but this isn't really teaching me anything. My LC did the same thing. Not one single nurse offered me formula. No one even mentioned it. Everyone I asked for help just told me "it's hard but don't give up!" I just wanted one person to tell me "girl it's totally fine to quit this, just feed your baby". I got home, made it through one feeding. The second feeding I called my mom and sister in tears. They both told me what I needed to hear and 20 minutes later my sister was at my door with a laundry basket full of formula that she got by couponing. I'm considering not even trying it again with this one because formula worked out so well for C. But my experience in the hospital definitely changed things for me too.

We started letting our cat outside a few weeks ago. I originally wanted her to be an inside cat, but she kept escaping or at least trying her hardest to escape so we decided to let her. She'd sprint out the door as soon as we came home. She's outside maybe 2 hours a day and keeps mostly to our backyard. I see both sides and don't have strong feelings either way, but I figured our cat is happier now so I'm okay with it...plus she's getting a lot more exercise now and escapes the terror of our toddler. I have a lot more feels about outside dogs.

We are definitely a no outside cat family. I have a friend that has lost 2 cats AND 2 small dogs by letting them run free at her house and it drives me insane!
I also always struggle to think of UOs. Mine are either super controversial and not worth getting into or dumb. Lol.
We had our mw appt today which went great. I'm now waiting for my 6:30 class tonight at a different university from mine so I don't know anyone here... fun times!

We live by people who have a lot of land, and have barn yard cats (mousers as they call them), that seems reasonable to me. If your in an area where your cat will be by a lot of cars driving around, you should just probably keep them inside.
My UO seems judgy but I wish more parents would stop giving their elementary and middle schoolers smart phones. Apparently all the kids have them, exaggeration I am sure, but I see kids with them all the time. I don't want my kids to have access to the internet all the time, I think they are way too immature for socail media, and I think they would be glued to them all the time. I am on my phone probably too much. Like now they are all either doing homework or playing, and while I am waiting for dinner to come out of the oven I though, hey a quick check. I need to work on not checking my phone as much, inagine someone with out a fully developed brain not being tempted to look it at it at school. One day when they are in high school they can have a smart phone. Right now they share a slider phone that you can text or call no Internet, it is mainly for my almost 13 when I need to communicate with rides and such. I plan on bring pretty annoying when they get in high school too. It will charge over night in my room, I will have socail media passwords, things like that.

Does she have somewhere to go if it gets very cold where you live?
It's hard to turn an outside cat into an entirely indoor one. I was glad mine had never been outside when I got them. I also miss living where there were lots of rescues. I've found a few cats new homes (strays and rehomes of acquaintances) and it's harder down here.

i agree on the phone thing. I also get sad when I see iPads at dinner table when I go out to eat. C doesn't behave like an Angel at dinner but she will never learn if I just throw a pad in her face to calm her down. I feel judge too, and I'm really to each their own but I admit it does bother me.

I live in California. Our cold here in the valley is nothing like in other parts or states. She has a little bed next to the back slider that she lays in. We have a very large covered patio and that's where she is at.
We had a cat show up at our house in February when we had a ton of snow and it was freezing cold. I have no idea how long he had been out and no one was looking for him that I could find. It took a lot of convincing to get him to come inside (we had to trap him and he was not happy about it) and for him to warm up to us but once he got settled in he showed zero interest in the outside world. He was so timid I have no idea how he ever survived outside. He turned out to be the sweetest cat.
I have no feels about phones and iPads. We take an iPad to restaurants with us and sometimes it's the only thing that will keep C from jumping around like a maniac while we wait for our food and other times she doesn't even glance at it. I'd rather you judge me for my kid quietly playing on an iPad than you judging me for having to leave a restaurant because my kid will not calm the f down.
Also restaurant is like the hardest word for me to spell for some reason.

We give DS a tablet when we go out (it's not often at all that we go out to eat)... he's not the kind of toddler to sit and behave so we have to distract him. It works for us

The catholic one in my area is buying up a lot of the hospitals. The other women's center in the area actually broke away from the hospital when the hospital was bought by the catholic system because they didn't agree with not being able to offer full women's care
setsuna17 OMG DeVos! Her confirmation hearing made me want to cry (angry) actual tears. You can NOT seriously be so uneducated and oblivious.
This leads me to an UO, and one that is my soapbox as an educator: I think if parents want to be allowed to homeschool, they should have to pass the state's teacher licensing test(s) and then have to show AYP just like we do in public schools. I got lucky....my parents are both educators and did s great job homeschooling me. But I know a ton of people whose parents were clueless and did them a huge disservice by homeschooling them. I swear to high heaven that if BD starts giving them federal money without proof that they can provide an appropriate and comparable education, I'm going to lose it.
Re: cruises - miserable! We took one in 2009 and I was seasick the whole time. Then we only had 3 hours at our destination. Cruises are since then a hard pass for me.
Also, when I checked into the hospital for DD's birth, I told the front desk, nurses and my OB that I didn't even want the LC to look my way and to keep her out of my room for the entirety of my stay. They did, and I was so thankful! DNW extra pressure and stress regarding a decision I have already made. Leave me alone!
mcp6286 I did the same thing when J was born. The moment I was in my room, I told my nurse I was going to formula feed from the start. I then told my husband to make sure she heard me. I was only asked why once, because the paperwork obnoxiously asked for the mother's feeding choice on arrival, post delivery, and at discharge (they're trying to get baby friendly status).
I'll be doing the same this time around. No need for the LC to even know I'm there.

mcp6286, I have a lot of feels about homeschooling and I completely agree that parents who homeschool should have to be qualified to teach, which so many are not. SIL was "homeschooled" her last 3 years of high school. MIL worked full time. No one was there to educate SIL. I find that ridiculous.
I struggle with the homeschool thing. Want to respect people's wishes to keep their kids home, but a number of people I know that do don't seem to have enough education themselves to do it. I know FB isn't a fair indication on English language understanding, but if you consistently mix up words like break/brake, accept/except, etc., I have a hard time believing you can reach your child to do better.
I know I'm not smart enough to teach my kid at a lot of levels. There's wisdom in acknowledging that. I feel like some people homeschool because of a few issues I don't agree with and it's detrimental to the kid in so many other areas. Could some of these people even pass a GED exam? Ugh.
