@boxerific thanks for the check-in! How are things going with you?
What's new with your big kid since last time? L is now on 20 mg of an ADHD med called Vyvanse and it seems to be working at school. The first week or so on the med was tough because we were still figuring out doasage. This week has been a lot better so far at school. My only issue with the medicine is when it starts to wear off at night. It's like every emotion and frustration he has had from the day just hits him and he has a daily temper tantrum during homework time. Its so hard because I know it's the medicine doing it.
L knows he is taking medicine for his distraction and we check to make sure he is feeling ok on it. I really want him to understand that the medicine is just here to help and shouldn't make him feel bad.
What areas of school does your big kid love? Math and science are his favorite.
What areas could your big kid do without? Reading and writing, it's like pulling teeth to get him to read and write.?
Has your big kid encountered any instances of bullying yet? We had a couple instances of bullying when he was in K. L watches My Little Pony (the new one is actually well written) and he let it slip at school in K and some of the boys made fun of him until the teacher put a stop to it.
QOTW: Do you have any vacations lined up this year? Not really. I had hoped to go camping but that may not be possible. It really all just depends on so many factors right now.

@boxerific, His appetite is ok at school but at home its lacking. We just got a note from his teacher yesterday saying that they would like us to up his meds again to 30 mg... I am really cautious about this because her only concern is that he is a chatter box, but to some extent that is just his personality. I am torn on what to do and have to call his pedi and discuss with them today or tomorrow.
What's new with your big kid since last time? Fynn has started basketball and skating lessons. He is doing much better than last year.
What areas of school does your big kid love? He loves to read and science, I think he enjoys the arts a well. He is a smart kid and thankfully likes school.
What areas could your big kid do without? I think he could do without world languages and theater.
Has your big kid encountered any instances of bullying yet? Just the usual kids stuff, nothing serious or perpetual.
QOTW: Do you have any vacations lined up this year? We are going to Romania/Europe in July. We are attending the wedding of DH's cousin in Romania and then we will travel around a bit but no definite plans yet.

@boxerific, thanks for the tag and invite!!!
What's new with your big kid since last time? My oldest, M, is 10. He's in 5th grade, in the advanced STEM program. He's really enjoying all the projects and such, but he struggles with self-control and keeping himself on track. My middle son, E, is in 2nd grade, and he's just awesome. He's struggling with being lazy, but I remember M doing the same thing at this age.
What areas of school does your big kid love? M loves science and math. M also reads a lot, and really fast! I've tried getting thicker, more difficult books for him, but he can easily read a 200-page book in a day. E enjoys math, too, but he really likes building things and taking things apart to see how they work - engineering, I guess I would call it.
What areas could your big kid do without? M isn't big into social studies yet, but I think he'll really enjoy history in the next year or two. E isn't a big reader. He can read and is on-par with his grade level, but he still struggles with some of the bigger words that chapter books have. He's in that awkward 'too old for kiddie books but not quite old enough for most chapter books' stage.
Has your big kid encountered any instances of bullying yet? Last year, both boys dealt with bullying, so much so that E came home with a large scratch down his side. This year, M hasn't encountered any that I'm aware of, but E has. E walks to school and home, and the same boys that bullied them both last year have cornered him a couple of times this year. I've talked to his teacher about it, and she has informed the administration and told me that if it got to the point where he didn't want to walk home, that she would stay at the school with him until I could get him (just 15-30 minutes after school lets out). Thankfully, it hasn't gone that far.
QOTW: Do you have any vacations lined up this year? Not yet. I just started a part-time job at the local chamber of commerce, and I'm loving it, but simply don't have vacations in the budget. Our pastor wants us to go to an overnight seminar in March, and we may take a trip to the beach over the summer, but no big plans yet.
sarcaztic10, what about splitting his dosage between morning and afternoon to keep him from having that breakdown? IDK anything about how those meds work, so I may be making a really dumb suggestion... I'm sorry you're dealing with that, but glad the meds are helping him.
@boxerific, Yay for no training wheels! That's always such a big deal for kids (and parents!)
mara005, I'm so jealous of your travel plans! I'm dying to go overseas! My work is hosting a trip to Tuscany in September, but it's so expensive!! I'd LOVE to go, though!

MoreThanSparrows I'm so glad you joined in! L's med is an extended release pill but it wears off. I talked to his Dr and she agrees that 20mg sounds like the correct dose and actually gave us an Rx for another med that only lasts about 3-4 hours that he can take right after I pick him up from school just to get through homework. We will try that med after school starting tomorrow and see how it goes.
