Hi all.
I usually post on Parenting, but dipping my toes in here.
I have a 5 year old (8/30/11) and a 2 year old (8/23/14). I am 39, live in a suburb of NYC and I am a social worker in a non profit that services the developmentally disabled. We procure waiver services for our individuals.
My 2 year old was a late term preemie, born at 35 weeks due to a rupture. He hit all his physical milestones on time but we noticed his speech was delayed when he was around 18 months of age. At his two year appointment, his pedi suggested an EI screening, though she cautioned that it is rare in my county to get services at age 2 and even rarer when there were no red flags for other conditions.
He was screened and the ST determined his receptive was beyond his age, but his expressive was a 15 month old level. My county denied him the services, but the ST that evaluated him spent hours on the phone with the EI coordinator and brow-beat her into green lighting Patrick.
He has been getting speech since October and we have noticed improvement, but he is still pretty delayed. Apraxia has been thrown around quite a bit the last month. Everything I can find on apraxia is worst case. I am familiar with it, through my job, but the cases we see are extreme and not relevent to my son. The ST described it as his muscles not reading the communication signals that his brain is sending, but she stressed that she thinks his apraxia is fairly mild.
Does anyone know of any good resources where I can learn about the full spectrum of apraxia because Dr. Google is scary?
Thanks if you made it this far.
