Get a baby gym like W's last photo! It may seem useless but we started using it at 2 weeks. Our has lights on the top and we would lay DS in it to watch the lights when we needed to do something. We did that for months
I'm gonna hijack some... the bourdreux's brand is amazing. If you cloth diaper, you'll need to put either a liner on or switch to disposables during use. For cloth safe diaper cream, I recommend Grandma El's or CJ's BUTTer
"Pee pee" covers are a waste. Throw a wipe on top of the boyhood until you get quick enough with diaper changes
OMG wubbanubs/pacifier holders. If you use pacifiers, get them. Buy them, buy them all
Swaddles: don't bother with the Carter's brand stuff. Go straight for the expensive 44"x44" or larger ones. You can find them at BRU, BBB, and target. I think sam's even carries them on occasion. To echo Willie, GET THEM!
We still use our boon lawn at 2 years.. it works well for toddler cups as well as bottle parts! The trees and flowers are great, the butterflies? Not so much
-- take any and ALL things from the hospital. Seriously. If they restock diapers, wipes, and blankets, put half in your bag and repeat when they restock it again.
Something to think of that will vary hospital to hospital - we were specifically told not to take laundry items (blankets and shirts). Any and all items that came into the room and could be opened (diapers, dry wipes, pads for mom, etc) were fair game, but don't assume they're ok with blankets walking out the door in your bags. Not sure they would actually do anything about it, but it was mentioned a few times to not take laundry type things.
Thankfully we had a nice nurse that hid a blanket in a bag for MH so he could take it home to the dog, but we weren't supposed to take it.

Related note to the above, if the hospital brings a pump into your room and it's the same brand you have at home, see what accessories you can take. They gave me a Medela Symphony to use in the hospital and it was wheeled in with a package of flanges, connectors, valves, bottles, and membranes. None of that can be reused so it all came home with me to use with my PISA.
In addition, the tubing connects to the Symphony in a special way to prevent backflow. If you take the tubing (which can't be used by another patient) from the Symphony and cut off the yellow plastic pieces on the end that connects to the machine (not the ends that connect to the bottle connectors) you can use the tubing with your home pump.

We weren't allowed to take blankets or kimono's with DS1 but everything else was fair game. I do wish we'd have snuck a blanket though as a keepsake.. trying to swaddle with those blankets was awful though. He constantly broke free and whacked himself in the face (therefore waking him up) if it wasn't done by a nurse

Thanks for the tips W! We got a few things at our shower yesterday I'm obsessed with and a few I'll be returning ($60 wipe warmer).
STMs: we got TONS of diapers yesterday. But they're all preemie-size 1. I want to take some back to exchange for bigger sizes. I'm taking all the preemie back. But how many size NB/0 and 1 should I keep as a stock pile? Remember two babies.
mustloveerica we went through those sizes really fast. You'll most likely move up when they hit the lower weight limit on the diapers. We did disposables for the first 2ish weeks and managed to go through all the NB diapers from the hospital and about half a box before rapidly trying to use them all since he needed size 1. We were in size 4 by 6 months but only moved up to size 5 at 18 months. We're still in size 5 but so rarely use them that I have a giant box of diapers just sitting around

DD is using newborn size diapers and probably will until she's eight lbs (so three weeks old?). We're halfway through a giant box but we took some home from the hospital.
The boppy is too small for me, I love My Brest Friend pillow though.
I warm up wipes in my hand or in my cleavage, no need for a fancy warmer.
Get a diaper pail that takes regular kitchen trash bags, saves money.

I have the my breast friend on my registry but we were also given a boppy, I'm not thin so I'm thinking the my breast friend may work better for me.

I'm usually a 22/24 and the regular brest friend was just a tad small, I had to use an extra tie on it to close it. I went for the twin/plus version this time and it buckles no problem.

I like the Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter.
I have that and Lansinoh Lanolin. Like W said, the Lanolin works much better warmed up. I rub some between my fingers to warm it up if I use that instead of the EMAB Nipple Butter.
I think the Earth Mama is what I plan on getting (I have my secret Amazon registry of nursing stuff).
I love the wipes in the cleavage idea.
Can you have multiple registries on Amazon, one public and one private? Or do you have a public registry someplace else?
I have public ones with babylist and BRU, not sure if you can have multiple ones on Amazon. I have it partly for the breastfeeding stuff, and partly to back up babylist (since they don't have a completion discount).
W - Thank you for this and the pumping thread! I love hearing all the real-life FTM experiences. For any other FTMs who have an outside baby reading this, feel free to start your own threads or chime in with thoughts!

PirateCat - I have a private Wish List on Amazon right now but am about to convert it into a registry. You can keep your registry private until you're ready for people to be able to search for it.

I am always in the minority when it comes to the wipes warmer. We actually went out and bought one when DD was 2 wks old and plan on using it again this time. We found cold wipes would instantly make her scream MOTN but if they were warm, she would stay in a bit of a twilight and go back down easier.
For diaper cream, I am a big fan of Triple Paste. Nothing worked well for DD when she would get a regular rash but that stuff worked. And for a yeast diaper rash (where you can see little bumps and regular diaper cream does not work), athlete's foot cream works great. DD got it a few times and the rx stuff would not clear it up but athlete's foot cream worked wonders.
Money and the size of your tub, but mostly money...
Honestly, we got one second hand. We used a ramp/sling type thing in the regular tub. You can also just put baby in the sink for a while. After about 6 months, we jumped to just using the ramp thing in the regular tub

@xamountofwords , My requirement for a tub is that it has to be able to grow with baby. I really liked the tub we had for DD and plan to get a similar one for this baby. We used ours up until DD was about a year because I liked being able to contain her in the small area rather than in a big tub. The one we had had vibration, which did nothing for DD so the one we plan on getting is basically the same tub without the vibration option. link
At first when DD was a newborn, we put the tub on the counter but we moved to placing it in the bathtub by 3 months when she started splashing a little more.

I didn't register for a wipes warmer but my friend sent me one when DS was a week old...he screamed less at diaper changes when we use it. I have the Munchkin Glow one, which is like $25 Canadian on Amazon, but I actually really do like having one. Necessary? Absolutely not. Useful, yes.
Ours has a sling for the newborn stage, an incline for when they're a bit bigger but can't sit up yet, and then an upright part for when they're bigger. We used ours until DS was about 10 months...then he started trying to climb out of it when he decided he didn't like baths. I liked being able to keep him contained and use less water even though he could have just sat in our regular tub by then.
Now I want to know about diaper bags, do you get one unisex one the share with your H or do you get a few and you both get your own? Also there is to many options and I would like to see what you prefer if you have the time. Please and thank . Obviously I don't need to complete a registry today, but I'm just exploring every thing
