I recently read a book called "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" and it was incredible. True story about a man from rural Africa who read books and taught himself to generate electricity with a wind turbine he made using old bicycle parts and junk metal/plastic. So amazing and inspiring.

I love Harry Potter! I've only seen the movies, (I know!), but look forward to reading the books with the LO.
I'm reading Shantaram right now. It's a novel, but written by the man who lived the life it's based off of. He escapes prison in Australia, and winds up in Bombay. There's a lot of philosophical revelations that intertwine with his life on the streets as a criminal. It's a very interesting and thrilling.
I honestly don't know the name of the book, but I read it when I was an exchange student in high school in Germany. It was the story of a Jewish man who had the perfect Aryan measurements, so he essentially became a nazi soldier to survive nazi Germany. It was a true story and we got to the opportunity to do a q&a session with the author.
I don't know that this fully answered the question, as it's not my favorite but it is definitely one of the most influential and memorable stories I've ever read.
Other than that, one of my favorites is the Jessica Darling series by Megan McCafferty. The first is called Sloppy Firsts. I read it for the first time in 8th grade. It's written like a journal and it captures life so well. It's hilarious and a series I will always come back to. I can't tell you how many times I have read it!
My favorite all-time fictional story is Harry Potter, hands down. I enjoy the notion of a magical world coexisting with ours, undetected. I typically trend toward magical/sci if stories because I like to have an escape that I can imagine in my head. I like to consider the way buildings and terrain are shaped, character voices sound, and I like stories like the Chronicles of Narnia (the whole box set) for similar reasons. And plus also I like FanFiction and I find these types of worlds are the easiest to write/read about for a furthering of the storylines.
My favorite nonfictional story is a book called Waiting for Snow in Havana. It's a memoir of a Cuban refugee who escaped Castro in 1959. He details his childhood in Havana, his relationship with his father and mother, and uses his experiences and lessons to define the existence of God in a sort of tongue in cheek manner (i.e. Lizards native to Cuba are one of the reasons). It really got me to thinking about the things in my life that I could pull meaning from, even if it sounds silly or trite in an outside perspective.
I love to read but I have been slacking lately... Harry Potter is also a favorite. A wrinkle in time was a favorite growing up as well. I don't want to take other's answers though! I loved this silly knitting in the city book series but the main reason is because I needed something light and sexy since becoming a mom. I can't take anything too heavy lately.
I love the mistborn trilogy but don't love the new western style continuation of the series.
My two all time favorite books are To Kill a Mockingbird and Alicia: My Story, which is an autobiography of a teenager who survived the holocaust. I first read it in 7th grade and it definitely influenced my perceptions of the world and also encouraged me to be a strong, independent person. I also love Harry Potter and the Hunger Games series.

I love the never ending story (movie)
I loved mistborn too but couldn't read the Alloy law

What's a story you've recently read or watched that you love?
Currently reading Stephen King's Dark Tower series and I am really enjoying it. Just finished book II. It is a fantasy epic with a western theme.
Some of my favorite books are The Hobbit and /LOTR, Stephen King's The Stand, and for nonfiction Tracks by Robyn Davidson. Some YA series I really enjoy are Harry Potter of course, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, Garth Nix's Old Kingdom series, and Diane Duane's Young Wizards series. Also pretty good are Victoria Hanley's Healer and Seer books, Kristen Cashore's Graceling Realm series, and Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness.
ETA: Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin, how could I forget you! I stopped watching the show awhile ago because I do not want spoilers for The Winds of Winter. Also, that show was really going downhill and by that I mean deviating from the books at an unacceptable level.

I started Song of Ice and Fire fifteen years ago and I just feel like a chump at this point.
I am beginning to feel this way about the King Killer Chronicles...

Another vote for Harry Potter books. I can't wait to read them with DS when he's older. One of my all time favorites is The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I've read it so many times and it still gets to me.
I typically gravitate towards thrillers/mysteries. I recently read Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter and loved it. I like the fast paced excitement of thrillers. I couldn't put that one down.

Have you read All the Missing Girls yet? It's told in reverse, and you still do t find out what happened until the end

I loved that series too!
That makes me so happy!! Most people have never heard of it
I'm also a big mystery fan. Some of my recent favorites are: Where They Found Her by Kimberly McCreight, Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll, Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight, The Good Girl by Mary Kubica, Invisible by James Patterson, the Rizzoli and Isles series... I could go on and on. Lol

@pianolove it is my second favorite to Harry Potter. Ever heard of the golden compass? That's the first book. The second and third book are extraordinary. I can't explain the entire plot well but it's great.
Oh I yes, GOT is an all time favorite series. I agree the show has strayed far from the books, but enjoying them both... if only Martin would sit his fat butt down and finish the series!!! I just got into The Expanse series by James S A Corey after watching the series on Netflix. So good for sci fi!
