Thinking ahead to the birth: we are trying to decide when we would notify our families (in labor, after birth, etc) and what we want for visitors. I'd be happy if both families visited in the hospital and then gave us time alone. I'm also terrified of bring home a neeborn and having no idea what to do with just DH and myself.
Totally a personal decision as everyone else has said. The only thing I'll add is that if you're planning on breastfeeding, that first 24 hours is huge in establishing that relationship. You want to be skin to skin and feeding as much as possible. I let everyone come to the hospital and we were still struggling to figure out BF late that night. My milk was slow to come in and we really struggled as a result. It all ended up being fine (still BF at a year) but that is my biggest regret. If I'm lucky enough to do it again there will be absolutely no visitors the first 24 hours.
ttcbabyj we had a bassinet but then ended up using a RnP for a while because we were desperate for sleep, and it worked. But she started getting a flat spot (they can't really turn their head in the RnP) so we transitioned her to the bassinet at 3 months and she actually stayed bedside in the bassinet until 7 months. She was a terrible sleeper and I was working and I just couldn't imagine going up and down the stairs that many times a night. No real trouble transitioning from bassinet to the crib, but the transition from the RnP to the bassinet was miserable.
ttcbabyj our plan was to use a pack n play with a bassinet inset in our room for the first few months before transitioning to the crib. Best laid plans and all, Z will not sleep in the thing at all. Best theory we have is she still likes feeling something with sides around her, not flat. A rock n play was a lifesaver so we have that next to our bed for her currently.
I'm not sure yet when we'll transition to her crib, but I know the current recommendation from the pediatrician association is to have your baby in your room until one year. That said, I don't know think I know anyone who went longer than 6 months.
teachermomtobe I'm a bit late to the game on this but I second everything @ketchup said. In our case, I was able to hold everyone off until after we had been home about 5 days but when his parents came THEY invited more people. Also my mom was a nervous wreck during my delivery and despite specific instructions to the opposite, my dad was texting MH. I wish we hadnt even told them I was being induced.
Our visitors bossed me around (go take a nap, etc) they did not listen to my wishes (e.g. Take the baby out of the car seat inside the house WTF!) and overall it made things a lot worse for me. Hello grocery shopping just before labor for all those people who then have the audacity to ask if you made XYZ because they really like it. The only person that was helpful was my sister who came a month later and cooked like a mad person so we had a freezer full of food when she left. But even with that I still had to get all the groceries etc which was not fun a few weeks PP.
Everyone is different but heed the advice to be crystal clear with your SO and family and don't back down to be nice. You can do it either way.
Oh, +1 to the point about breastfeeding. In the few first few days, and at the hospital, if you are breastfeeding your breasts will be out so much. Don't invite any visitors to stay for long who might not be comfortable with seeing a little boob.
I had my NT scan today and a transvaginal u/s to check cervix length. Both looked good and no problems spotted.
About an hour and a half after the exam, I had a large gush of blood and passed a clot. The doctors attributed it to the transvaginal u/s. Anyone else had this or heard of this?
Anybody take FMLA leave prior to due date? Original edd is 3/28, I'm a teacher and physically and emotionally exhausted now. Growth scan edd said 3/17, though they aren't officially changing it up yet.
I'm a teacher as well and took a littl time before my due date mostly because it lined up with spring break. I know some people are able to go right up to their due date, but I thought it was nice to plan my exit and I was exhausted anyways. If you can do it, take the time. You won't regret it!

I worked past my due date, but I know a lot of ladies who went out before (my DD was 10 days late but i stopped working at 41 weeks.). Since I only had a specific number of days we could afford me not getting paid, I didn't take off early. That being said, if I'd been able to take off, I would have. It was exhausting working that giant and pregnant.

. I went on leave at 37 weeks with a C sec scheduled for 39 weeks. I'm in California though, and here they will pay maternity disability leave for up to 4 weeks before your due date with approval from your doctor. I had horrific swelling in my last few weeks and was not very mobile at all - I spent much of that 2 weeks off on the couch feeling miserable, but it was good to get the rest!

I'm in CA so I was able to take flma 4 weeks prior to my due date. I believe we can only get 12 weeks of Fmla so if you are ok with it running out after the birth or don't plan on taking it then, go for it.

School year ends 8 weeks after due date. So I'm already backing up to summer. I can't take the remaining time in fall, as then I'd have no sick days for the new school year.
Go for it!!! It was so nice to have the last few weeks of pregnancy to myself with no work.

I've heard is spotting but not large bleeds.
I haven't personally had this with the vag cam but I had a good bleed after my first cervical check. The ob warned me but otherwise I would have freaked! Similar but not quite the same so hopefully someone else will chime in.
Do you have a Doppler at home to check for heartbeat for peace of mind?

Thanks westiemom, and yes to the doppler. I used it this morning so that definitely helped.
I know the told me I could spot after transvaginal ultrasounds/cervical length checks. Hopefully just an irritated cervix. I'm glad things were good with the Doppler!

Yes this happened to me too but OB also warned me. It went on for like 24hrs too. Would think vag cam could do something similar.

Thanks @turquoisqueen!
Glad your OB warned you. I'm not happy with my MFM at the moment over how she handled my question about some spotting I had and for failing to warn me about any bleeding that I may have from this.

@wineandcupcakes, thanks for the feedback. And we clearly live in the same general area based on your weather this past week! I'm near Boston. Congrats on the babies!

Me too! I delivered at BWH. Are you delivering in the city?

I had twins, but I went on bed rest at 34 weeks so I stopped working then. I NEEDED that time off because just moving myself between the kitchen, bathroom, and recliner was exhausting.
