So we had our 6 month ped appt. As I expected, E dropped in weight percentages again. We go back for a weight check in a month. I don't get it. He nursed frequently. Started solids and gets lots of food to his mouth. We do BLW so he's probably not actually consuming a ton though. comicSans how are things with you in the weight gain? Any tips? I am going to try more fatty foods, but that's hard w BLW bc I'm not going to force food in him. Ugh.
Welcome to my headspace. Sorry you're here too, as it is a place full or worry and frustration.
We're doing ok. He's nursing 6 or 7 times a day and I'm focusing on the higher fat food when he eats, but like you I have no idea how much he's actually eating. The diapers have changed though, so I know some is getting in.
I have no idea if he's gaining. We had a stomach bug last week so that was a set back. Yesterday afternoon he spit up every few minutes for over an hour - also not good.
I'm confident my supply is fine but I'm still doing best practices to maintain and build it. One lc suggested if he's distracted or loses interest after the let down stops, it wouldn't hurt to have higher supply so there's more "oomph" in the initial let down. I'm also doing my best to nurse him in his room so he'll focus more.
I still worry about it, but I feel like I'm doing everything I can. I'm not sure what the doctor is looking for at the weight check in 3 weeks, but I'll be happy if he's maintained his curve. After the stomach bug I'm really not expecting him to be climbing back up the chart.
rungirlrun here's a bunch of stuff that was suggested to me by lcs and some friends who had slow gain or failure to thrive kids.
Nurse in quiet, dark space w/ no distractions Compressions after letdown Switch nursing - switching sides multiple times to keep baby interested Eat good higher fat foods yourself - avocado, nuts, oils Eat oatmeal Drink beer Increase water intake
Foods to try with baby - peanut butter, avocado, eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, sweet potato, banana, mix a little coconut oil into oatmeal or other soft foods.
If teething is an issue, give him something cold to chew on - frozen wash cloth or bagel
I'm trying an oil blend to help too, and it does seem to make him or comfortable.
Sorry you're dealing with weight issues rungirlrun. I second nursing in a quiet dark place. I can only nurse Irene in her room now with the lights dim and white noise machine on to block out DD1's noise. I think this may be part of the reason we're up a lot at night feeding, because she can eat well then. But I'm trying hard to make it more relaxing and less distracting during the day.
We had our 6 month appt yesterday and S is steadily in the 16th percentile for weight but dropped to the 10th percentile for height.
L was always in the 90s for everything so having a short little guy is new for us.
I really try not to worry about his weight and height but it's hard when I see the percentages... part of me wishes they didn't tell me that stuff, just give me his weight and height and say he is fine.
ellebelle I've been wondering if thats our problem too. She's pushing 3-3.5 in between feedings during the day and then last night ate every two hours.
rungirlrun Sam dropped on the growth chart between 4 and 6 months from 25% to 16% and before the doctor came in I was worried about what she would say. Luckily she's in the camp of, as long as they are gaining weight and not plateauing or losing, they're fine. He also went from 50% height to 75% so he grew up significantly and is constantly moving, so she said that's most likely part of the reason he dropped. We'll see what happens at the 9 month appointment though!
Thanks ellebelle. I try to feed him in his room when I can, but it includes me trying to get his brother out of the room as he sings and is super distracting. I had to lock the door today which made me feel awful. I really want to night wean, but like you, I feel like I can't give up those peaceful feedings.
Thanks mcktymck. That makes me feel a little better. I think our boys are very similar in size (E was 27 in and 15 lb 8 oz at 6 months). The ped wasn't overly concerned, but I hate that he keeps dropping. Wish I could eat and eat and still stay skinny!
