When are you starting solids? We hadn't planned on starting yet, but DS had his 4 month check up today and his weight percentage dropped. He is 14lbs which seems decent, but he went from 50% to 27% in 2 months. He also had trouble gaining weight in his first few weeks. He is mostly BF. I pump at work and am a little short for the next days bottles so he gets 2-4 oz of formula.
So the ped wants us to start solids to get some weight back on him. He recommends skipping oatmeal and going right for fruits and veggies. It seems early to me, but I do trust the ped. Has anyone else started yet?
We are waiting as LONG as possible. I hate the diapers afterwards, having to worry about another mouth to feed/what to feed, another kid to clean up after, more dishes, more food prep NEWP. Probably between 6-7 month we will start with combo puréed and blw.

Our ped recommends skipping cereals and oatmeal and going straight the veggies too. It's more nutrient dense than cereals/oatmeals. Would it be easier to supplement with formula until 6 mo?

Personally I would just keep BF and koko. Yeah babe took a dip but lots of factors can be at play and it's not really that huge of a dip. Did they weigh babe each time with a clean diaper (that can be the difference in 5-6 ounces). The difference in 50% and 25% is less than one pound. My sister has big babies- like 9 lbs. But she and her husband are petite adults. Her babes drop percentiles over the first year and never go back. I, on the other hand, have small babies who then by 1 become giant babies. My husband is a tall guy. If baby looks healthy to you, you see a little fat and they have wets and dirties, I would do food as you had planned to. Maybe ask if you can stop back in another month for a weight check and decide then.

I also have huge newborns but petite babies. Both kids stared in the 95th and trend downward. DS is now in the 25th and has been since around 3-4 months and dd is headed that way. I'm 5'7 and DH is 6'3. We were both slender children.

I think we're gonna be starting him around 5.5 months - it's Persian new year then, and since we're doing a combo of puree and blw, I'd love to have him trying his first foods around the holiday and around my family. At the rate he's going, he'll probably be sitting up by then.

mg0202 DS1 was at 10% for weight at 4 months and below the charts by 6 months. Being a first time mom, I thought I would bulk him up with solids. I did peanut butter, avocado, eggs, full fat yogurt, etc. Nothing worked. He continued to eat like a horse through his toddler years, and now at three, is still low on the weight charts. He's just a tall, skinny kid. And through it all, my doctor never had a concern. Also, fruits and vegetables are not going to help your baby gain weight. Just compare calories of baby food to formula.
All that being said, it is generally acceptable to start solids at 4 months so you can if you want to. I just wouldn't expect it to bulk up your baby. We will wait until closer to 6 months because we will try blw.
thanks ladies. Haven't really decided what to do yet. We leave on vacation Thursday for 5 days so we will decide after that. I wasn't at the appointment, DH took him. He did say the Ped wasn't overly concerned, but said we need to watch him and we will see how things are at the 6 month appointment.
becole, I think the bit of concern did come because they do always weigh him in a clean diaper, he wasn't gaining weight after birth, and he is on the low end for the amount of diapers per day.
erien22846, I was thinking that too. Is 1 oz of food really going to bulk him up? didn't seem like it would make to big of a difference to me. But I do trust our ped and he has never steered us wrong before.
