I feel like I called so much of it before it happened, but it was still so well done.
Seriously though - Kevin! Pick up your phone and call ANYONE to go check on Randall. I mean, I get that the show was getting us to see how Kevin has changed and cares for him now vs when they were teens, but seriously. How can you do that to everyone on the show??! Cal Kate. Call your mom. Call someone and say go check on Randall. But that's not as good of TV
Toby and Kate enough of the we are going too fast, let's slow down. Then let's try to really get to know each and then slow it down again. I feel like their relationship feels so forced and happened way too fast.
And now Jack is drinking again. Sigh. Stupid Rebecca.
Next week looks like I'm going to cry the entire time. A whole Randall and William episode. Bonding before he dies. Ahhh!! I better plan my snacks accordingly; looks like I'll be emotionally eating my way through that.
I just think in real life, people don't do something like that. Right? In real life you pick up the phone and say "Hey Kate, I'm about to go on stage. I just talked to our brother and I really don't think he is ok. Please go check on him." Then maybe he doesn't perform as well or something during the play because Randall is on his mind.
I feel so bad for Randall. Next week's episode with him and William sounds good though I will be bawling. But even though Randall needed him it annoyed me that Kevin ran out on his play. I'm glad Kate didn't hook up with the douchebag. I had liked her and Toby but they were kind of annoying this episode.

I was never a huge fan of Kevin's & him leaving the show to be with Randall gave him a huge point in my scorebook this week. Some tears were shed for that when Randall leaned over on him when they were sitting next to each other. He better not have some life threatening health problem though, I'm worried about him. I also got the vibe that Jack's death is coming with that final scene. Which would really suck given the circumstances. I hope I'm wrong.

I actually got the impression from this episode that Jack's death is by suicide.
When Kate and Toby are discussing his divorce she asks about him considering suicide (we'd also had suicide come up in Randall's Christmas party episode) and then when Toby asks about Jack's death he says something like I know that he died and kind of how but not really *how* which makes me think he's asking kind of like for specifics.
What if Jack dies by accident, but it ends up looking like a suicide? I know there aren't many situations that look like that, but maybe? Or the other way I'm thinking is he gets in a car accident after drinking. Maybe Rebecca gets frustrated with Jack about jealousy or drinking, and she goes over to Miguel's to talk to him about Jack because she's concerned. Jack finds out she's over there, flips out because he thinks there is something going on, storms off and gets in a car accident. That's why none of them have a good relationship with Miguel?
I guess only time will tell!
frankenboom That is a great point about what Toby said - "well I know how, but not how" I was trying to figure out what that meant. Your theory makes sense. I hope you are wrong though! I can't see him doing that to his kids. I just can't!

I hope Jack doesn't commit suicide, but i think those are good examples of foreshadowing so maybe. When he took that first drink, i was so sad for him.
I wish Kevin would have called someone to check on Randall. I wanted him to be awesome I the play. But i like that he finally accepted Randall and let go of his resentment.
I hope Toby and Kate stay together. And i hope she can finally talk about her dad's death.
I was also thinking suicide. I thought that as soon as Randall was sitting there at the end. I think that's why Kevin left, he was worried about Randall committing suicide.
In the past we've talked about how Jack always looks good and Rebecca usually doesn't. Today I thought maybe the flashbacks are from the perspective of the kids (or Rebecca and the kids). When you loose someone while you are young you sometimes only remember the good stuff. They also know Rebecca as adults so they were able to see her faults but they never saw faults in their dad as children so they still don't see them
I cried so hard for Randall it's so sad seeing him like that. Kudos to Kevin for dropping everything he worked for to help out his brother. That was so thoughtful and I'm shocked he was that selfless.
And seriously fuck Rebecca. I'm over her shit and I hope jack is too.

I understand the sentiment about Jack being "to good," but suicide isn't really something a person "does to" someone, regardless of how much they love them. I mean if Jack is suffering from depression or other mental illness suicide might make sense (in the story line), regardless of how good and loving of a father and husband he is.

I actually think Kevin walking out on the play was terrible. He's not just ruining things for himself, but for Sloane and every person employed by the production. And if there were other producers. He could be literally ruining lives by just abandoning everyone like that.
I also don't think it's as selfless as it seems- I think his ego couldn't take the idea of trying and failing. So he gives himself an "out."
Still love him though.
Also, did we know before tonight that Jack was an alcoholic?

Jack was drinking a lot when Rebecca was pregnant, or maybe before and she mentioned it so he stopped. They made it a point last night to show that he was sober. When Miguel asked him to go to the club with him he said Jack didn't have to drink. Then they kept showing him drinking water at Rebecca's show.
One thing i just thought of though, when he planned the big surprise for her in the last episode, there was champagne or wine. I wonder if he drank then.
I feel like I called so much of it before it happened, but it was still so well done.

Eghhhh as much as Rebecca is a pain in the ass, let's be careful about even partially blaming her for an alcoholic's relapse
Does anyone else think Jack's death will finally be revealed on the same episode that William dies? I'm not sure that I could handle them both dying at the same time!

I thought the same thing! They seem to shadow a current event with something of the past.
I was actually thinking Jack dies of a heart attack. At that point in the show, he'd be about 52 and he ordered a whiskey, eggs and a bacon cheeseburger. I also thought he would probably die that night.
I loved that Kevin went to be with him because I think that was a big moment for their relationship but would NEVER happen in real life. I agree with others that he would be texting someone to go check on him or would go after the show.
I still love Toby and Kate and I think Toby was right to say, hey we need to be able to talk about everything so if we're not there yet, then let's just get there first. But not in a really pushy way. I am not sure that they will actually get married; but he does seem to be a regular character so I'm hopeful.
I do not think I can handle next week's ep. But I think there is only ONE MORE after that. How will I go on?
Finally, I really do hate Rebecca. I think it's partially because I don't like Mandy Moore but I do also wonder if the way she's painted in the flashbacks is from the kids' perspective because Jack is always portrayed as the rockstar even when he's out every night drinking or having his Valentine's dinner alone.
thumbswayup I said awhile back I wouldn't be surprised if we go the whole series without knowing. Because the show is about so much more than how Jack dies. There's so much story during the past and during the present, and they hop all around. Maybe when there's no story left to tell, we find out.
Drinking has to have a role in Jack's death. They made it a point to show his prior alcoholism, and his getting clean. Then he relapses. That means something.
I never thought of the flashbacks being told from the kids perspective! That's a really good theory.
I also never considered the flashbacks are from the kids perspectives but it's a good theory!
I heard that details of Jack's death are coming in season 2. I wonder if this season will end with both William being close to death and getting the start of Jack's story.
While I'm definitely curious about how Jack dies I'm not feeling I need to know. I'm loving watching the story of their characters unfold.
I also don't dislike Rebecca. I feel she's just a real person totally overwhelmed with triplets and how much her life changed. I think she was totally devastated and changed forever by Jack's death.
just watched. I loved the sentiment of Kevin leaving to go to Randall, but also it's not realistic.
Next week should be interesting and will probably make me cry based on the previews. I'm interested in the bonding time with William. The last part of the episode Randall was kind of rude to him so I'm hoping they get to know each other a lot more.
I think the suicide theory is likely, but I can't imagine them actually doing it. I bet it has more to do with his drinking and maybe even Rebecca getting or seeing Miguel. Or maybe something happens on the tour?
I liked that Toby stepped up and said to hold off on the wedding until they can talk about the hard stuff.
