So when my OB did my first set of prenatal bloodwork at my 10 week they determined I had a B12 deficiency. My levels were apparently really, really low. I'm assuming they were never checked by my RE. I only learned about it at my 12 week appointment when we went over my lab results. My prenatal is supposed to have 100% of my daily value for B12 but I guess my body just isn't absorbing it correctly. What a surprise, my body is not doing what it's supposed to do. So bottom line, I have to start getting B12 shots. I got my first one today and while in the waiting room I made the mistake of googling and totally freaked myself out that this deficiency could have serious effects on my baby. I had to stop Googling because I was spiraling. So I'm just wondering if anyone else has experience with this? I know there's really nothing I can do at this point (I'm 13 weeks) except keep getting the shots but I'm just a wreck.

No experience with the B12 deficiency but wanted to say: Step away from Dr. Google! Did your OB mention any concerns when you guys talked about it at your appointment? I would suggest calling or emailing your OB with questions you have so you can put your mind at ease (if no one here has any info).

Thank you mrsrodgersaz and shytimes! My OB didn't seem very concerned at all, which is why I didn't even Google until I was in the doctor's waiting room waiting for the shot. My regular doctor (where I had to go to get the shot) acted way more dramatic about it than my OB, but she was more shocked that I hadn't had any real symptoms. But yes, I have definitely stopped myself from googling anymore.
Thank you jennykat! I guess my worry is more about any damage the deficiency might have already done in the early weeks of pregnancy. But I keep reminding myself that I don't have a time machine so I just have to do what I can to fix it moving forward.

cali no real advice, but Google is not pregnancy friendly.
FWIW, I have two copies of the MTFHR gene, which makes it so my body can't absorb folic acid. I take Metanx (natural folate and B vitamins) I have been on these since day 1, but my understanding was my body's inability to absorb these vitamins put me more at risk of a miscarriage, not necessarily birth defects. When I hit OB time, I met with 2 different OB's since I hadn't seen one in so long and wasn't sure where I wanted to go. One wanted me off the Metanx, saying it was TOO much of B vitamins, and the other wanted me kept on it the whole pregnancy.
Anyway- I was anxious about it until the blood test they do around 15 or 16 weeks, but all was fine!
Anecdote- My sister also has MTFHR and didn't even realize it until she was 14 weeks. (Was tested after I was positive) She was low on folic acid, and all B vitamins, and has a totally healthy 21 month old! easier said than done, but try not to worry! (((Hugs)))
