At S's 18 month appointment on Nov 22nd his pediatrician referred us for a speech eval through our local Regional Center. I got his hearing tested the very next week like the Ped told us to do. I had to follow up with the center a few times to get through to them and get the ball rolling. Finally about the 2nd week in Dec they sent out the speech pathologist and occupational therapiat. They both said they would recommend him for speech therapy. But that it takes a week before the RC's committee meets and makes the final approval. Ok, fine, I waited another week for the approval. The week of xmas eve I called and their answering service said they were closed for 2 weeks and would reopen 1/3.
Jan 2 comes around and my Dad starts having chest pressure amd shortness of breath....he gets admitted into the hospital and because I have a VERY flexible job I was the one who was with him most of the week. Well, that week the RC finally contacts me back and says S was approved but that I need to go sign paperwork to finally get thinga going...well, it was a shit week emotionally w my Dad in the hospital. The following week I played catch up frantically with work...and then the 3rd week of Jan my Dad was back in the hospital....so this whole time I am trying to juggle being a full time daughter, a full time employee and a half assed Mom....Finally I get my ass to the RC to sign the damn paperwork the last week of January.
S had his first speech therapy session the first week of February and I was SO HAPPY to finally have the ball rolling on his speech therapy.
AND then he got croup. So of course we didn't do therapy the 2nd or 3rd weetk of February. And the speech therapist said she needed a Dr's note releasing him. So last Friday I took him to the Ped, she saw him and gave us a note. No more cough or runny nose.
Well....the speech therapist called yesterday and said she wants to wait another 2 weeks....because she wants to be sure he is totally over his cough. So she doesn't want to resume until March. And she also mentioned scheduling may need to be worked out again....she had to cut her first session short because she arrived 30 min before nap time, and I told her nap time wasf at 12....but her only opening was at 11:30....and sure as shit at 12 he started rubbing his eyes, yawning....
So now I feel like we have waited SO LONG for this to all get going, and we still arent getting anywhere. And jeez, in another 2 weeks my kid may have caught something else!!!
And his damn speech has not improved at all, like AT ALL. He has less than 10 words, and has not added ANY words for months.
And yes, I am an overachiever and knowing my kid is "behind" and that I'm not sure how else to help him is making me NUTS!!!! We read all the books, I talk to him and describe things to him constantly.
Tl:DR I'm been trying to get my kid into speech therapy for the last 3 months....and I'm fruatrated.
Did my wellness exam at work. Had decent numbers, but my glucose was high. Not sure if it was because I ate a Girl Scout cookie at 9:30pm the night before, or because my hyperglycemia is getting out of control. Hmmm...
I dont know who set these parameters but 101 is not high. Not even close. It is basically perfect. A cookie at 9:30 the night before would not effect this either.
I was thinking the exact same thing. 101 is pretty freaking ideal.
corrys12 it sounds like he has only had one session of speech so far--and that is probably why you haven't seen progress yet. Once sick season passes by and he can be seen more regularly, you will see more progress. If you have been cleared by the doctor saying that he isn't contagious anymore then I don't see why she wants to wait the extra 2 weeks. I understand being extra cautious since I know I have some medically fragile kids on my caseload but if he has been cleared as no longer sick.... :/ Maybe you can talk to your service coordinator about it?
It sucks that the only time slot that the SLP has available doesn't work for you guys; I wonder if they can find you another SLP with different availability? Either way, hopefully things settle down soon. :/

J is in bed. DH is in bed. I'm catching up on work while I watch jeopardy!
My interview went well today. I'm still not sure that I want this job but it would cut my commute in half and the salary would be more than I make now. If they offer it to me I would have to take it. It would mean so much for our family life.

Not caught up. DD just had a screaming meltdown in the middle of dinner, over who knows what. It ended when she picked up her plate, dumped the remains of her food...then put the plate on her head, looked at me, and happily said "hat!"

Thanks, yes, he has only had one 30min session. But I would think he would have added maybe 1 more word to his vocab in the last 3 months just by listening to us read and talk and sing.
The speech therapist did say she had some sensitive kids so she has to be super careful.
I am just frustrated because I want to see some progress. I hate not knowing what to do.
corrys12, that's ridiculous. If she's concerned about spreading illness, wash yo' damn hands.
Also, are there any private SLPs that take your insurance? I feel like people aren't told this is an option and wait for the snook district to get their act together and it's just wasted time.
