Following because this is where we are now. He slept with one and would occasionally use one during car rides because he hates the car seat. He had one at daycare but he moved into the toddler room at 18 months and they don't let the toddlers have them. We decided that would be a great time to wean. He's fine during the day but harder at night and when he's struggling with sleep. It's so easy to give in and give it to him when he's sick or teething.
I just had to do it cold turkey (well, gradual cold turkey)...it took less time than I thought it would, but a bit rough at first
We started when DD started going to daycare in Jan. .... basically, we just didn't send it with her so that she'd be forced to have naptime without it while at daycare (sorry daycare!)...and then after she adjusted into her routine at daycare and was taking consistent good size naps (couple weeks), we cut out night time. It actually wasnt too bad....she'd whine and cry for a bit or keep asking for it, and we'd just keep gently telling her "button is all gone...go to sleep"
Cold turkey, my friend. That's how we did it. I had talked about wanting to do it but felt like I relied on them more than he did at nap time and bed time. It took a few days of him pointing to where we usually kept it. If he didn't see it, he was ok. So we just had to hide them and later throw them.
Trolling Beyonce is my fave because she could shit on the floor like that Flavor of Love girl and people would WK her. "That floor should be honored Queen Bey shit on it. I wish she would shit on me." - @arielmermaid
DS refuses to take a pacifier, but he insists on chewing his shirt sleeves.
Goddammit, this is exactly my DS too! And he's 5 now! So many chewed up soggy sleeves.... never took a paci, never had a particular lovey or anything... but now he's doing this
It drives my H even more nuts than me
I know it could be an anxiety/comfort thing (anxiety runs alllllllllll the way up through my family, including ME), but....yeesh.

My friend told me a cute story of how he was weaned. He must have been 4 or 5 because he remembers it. His mom told him that if he mailed away all his pacifiers to some address they would mail him back a ghostbusters car. They went to the post office and put them in a gigantic envelope and mailed them off to a made up address. The next day he got a ghostbusters car and didn't need the pacifier anymore. Imagine getting an envelope with 10 pacifiers in it and no return address?

My cousin did this when she was little except it was her collar. She would chew and suck on it then rub it on her lips. She even caused a callous but she eventually grew out of it and stopped.

A friend tied them all to balloons and her daughter released them "to the babies in heaven." The last part creeped my out but I love that like a dozen pacifiers landed in someone's cow pasture or something.
The heaven part is a bit morbid but the idea is very cute.

Please don't tell me I have 5 more years of this!
Actually, in my DS' case this was a habit developed later... so within the last couple years. So maybe yours will grow out of it as opposed to into it... there's still hope

Only DS1 used one. He was just a bit younger than 2, I think. We did cold turkey. We lost his last pacifier in a restaurant and just never bought another one. He asked about it for two days and then never mentioned it again. Good luck!
