Ok, a little long - but I fully expect each and every one of you to give up every detail in your birth stories!!
I think my birth story starts at an OB appointment Thursday(2/12) when I had found out I was contracting every 8 minutes on a NST. I paid close attention to the contractions when they were on the monitor so I would know when it was time. By the end of the night I thought I was over thinking them because I could have sworn they were getting stronger, but they weren't getting any closer together so I tried to shrug it off. I had taken off work Friday(2/13) to stay home and do a 24 hour urine catch. The contractions still kept getting worse(but they actually became farther apart) and then it hurt so badly to pee that I would cry every time I did pee. I was becoming convinced that I was developing an infection or was having kidney issues and totally wiped the thought of labor out of my head. Sure enough, later that night at 12:30 am my water broke! (The pain when I peed totally went away once I gave birth. Still not sure what that was caused by.)
I called the nurse line at 1:30 after I made sure that I had a steady leak (I'm still disappointed I didn't have a dramatic gush, haha) and they told us to come on in. We arrived to L&D at 3 am and within moments of me changing into my gown my contractions went from every 8-15 minutes to every 3-4 minutes and unbearable. By this point the last time I had slept longer than 20 minutes was Wednesday night and I couldn't even fathom the med free birth I wanted to attempt. So in came the Anesthesiologist. I only cried twice during the whole labor and delivery - while placing the epidural and pushing. For those of you scared of the epidural, I did NOT feel the needle at all, it was so difficult because of the position she wanted me to sit in while she placed the epidural. I had to sit hunched over holding my calves. The nurse and DH were each holding down one of my shoulders to keep me in place.
Within ten minutes I couldn't feel anything and it was glorious. I slept for the first time in two days until it was time to push. By 5 am I was 7 cm dilated and at 9 am I was fully dilated. I didn't feel like I needed to push (and assumed that was because of the epidural) and the nurse said we would wait until I did feel like I needed to push. She said if I had tried to push when I couldn't feel it, that the pushing time probably would have been closer to two hours. So finally around 11:30 the time came. I pushed for 35 minutes and my DH was so wonderful. I didn't feel like he was reading lines from the script or anything like that. I truly believed him when he said I was doing a good job, I really felt like a team in that moment. It was amazing, out of all the moments between DH and I... I would say that beat saying "I Do."
I don't even know how to describe the feeling of holding your baby on your chest. I was so proud, I immediately stopped crying, I was so calm and in pure awe. Nothing sounded as beautiful as his cry. Padraic Donal was 37w0d and born at 12:23 pm on February 14, 2015 at a healthy weight of 7lb4oz and 20 inches long. Nothing will ever beat this Valentines day for me!
