I agree it's important to push a kid with asd (or any kid really) but I definitely think it's a balancing act. Speaking of my kid, if she's pushed too hard it makes her more likely to be defiant. The other extreme doesn't work as well; if someone is a pushover and goes too easy on her, she will manipulate them into thinking she can't do x or y.

I also think sometimes waiting makes things easier on everyone. Like I'm sure I could have potty trained my kid at 3 but it would have involved a lot of fighting and tears. At 4 it was a breeze. In the grand scheme of life that extra year made zero difference. Sometimes it's worth delaying the battle because with more time there actually ends up being no battle at all.

I think this book is for kids the aré older, she explains the importance of letting kid to experience different things, for them to be able to be great in and adulthood.

Nudge yes, shove no. The balance can be hard to strike. And that goes for all parents, not just ASD or SN in general.

Also I think Dr. Grandin is wonderful in many ways, but she has a tendency to see things too much from her own perspective. As in, when I was a kid my mom did this so all moms should do that because it worked for me. Not that this is uncommon or unexpected for a person with autism.
