The catholic elementary schools that my friends kids go to do have weekly mass. The non Catholics cannot take communion, but otherwise can worship with everyone else. I don't think there's an option to completely sit it out. The kids take turns reading scripture and things like that because I know my friend took off work to hear her son. Catholicism varies by parish, some are strict and some are not. Some are taught only by nuns. Most are not. Some are coed, others are separated by gender. Most wear uniforms.
I went to a private Anglican school and we started every morning with hymns and a prayer, we did a nativity play and carol service in the church every christmas and had bible readings at special assemblies. The education however was completely secular and religious studies class taught all religions. I need to remember that when looking at a top rated school for only $5k a year

Well, Catholicism is Catholicism. There are progressive liberal parishes and schools, but it's all centered around the same Catholicism.
I don't know of any catholic school that is all nuns anymore. There aren't that many nuns to go around!
I'm having feels. I gave my maternity clothes (not all, I kept some sweaters and tanks that I love and still wear) to a woman in the office next door. She doesn't have a lot of money for mat clothes and I see her squeezing into her regular clothes and looking uncomfortable everyday. She is my size and I know she'll be able to use almost all of it but it's sad. I know no more babies are in my future, but things like this just.... hit me in the feels.

I was feeling the same way when I bagged up the newborn clothes. I can't bring myself to definitely say no more babies.

It's still a really nice thing you did, though.
She was sweet when I brought them to her desk. And she graciously listened while I explained about the maternity and postpartum belts and the amazing sweat pants and the cute shirt.... she listened to it all. I feel good knowing they are appreciated and will get used.

This is a very high populated catholic area. There are two nunneries that I know of within 20 miles.

I know I was on here the other day preaching about throwing out/giving away everthing you don't need etc. Full disclosure I still have DD's baby blankets and zip up wearable blanket thing. I've given away most all of our baby stuff and my maternity clothes left right after birth but I just can't. I'm mostly okay with one and done but, but I miss baby days....

I'm the same way. It's why I turned J's blankie and favorite onesie of mine into ornaments. That way they still get used without the clutter or being stashed away in a closet. I know people who turn that stuff into pillows and teddy bears. I have enough pillows though...

This is why I saved every sleeper from her first year and am turning it into a quilt for her bed. Nothing fancy, just a fun crazy quilt.
My mom has a crazy quilt and it was one of my favourite past times as a kid to just rub all of the different material and try to find some that matched up.
I haven't been working on it after work and really need to crack down.
The turnstile entrance at my work is broke on first floor so they're asking people to use second floor until they get it fixed. There's only one elevator that will get you from first to second floor and they're extremely slow. You should hear the amount of people complaining about having to climb one flight of stairs to get to the turnstiles.

We have the convent right next door, but still only two nuns that work here. I think most of the nuns in the convent are retired. It feels like a nursing home when you walk in. From my understanding, a lot of them spent their lives doing a variety of mission work all over the world. Teaching just isn't a big focus for them anymore.

Have you seen the commercials urging paritioners to be there for the nuns in their time of need (they're all old) as they have been there for you? Such a catholic area lol.
Thanks emmagk and kittyriot for the Hue leggings recommendation. I bought my first pair and they fit the best out of all the leggings I've tried.
Woo hoo!! Glad you're liking them!!
Also, hi people! I've been taken out by the chest cold/flu. I am only now re-emerging from the land of Kleenex and no sleep and no energy. Hopefully I'll be able to visit more often.

LOL no I haven't but there's a billboard close to my house that's something about retirement for priests and nuns. Our students do a lot for the nuns when it comes to going there and spending time with them and we try to include them in things over here like judging spirit competitions and stuff. But TBH, the one time I visited the convent it was a little depressing. Like most of them have had really interesting lives, and now this is how they spend their final years.

I see this commercial. Also makes me think how few people are choosing priesthood and nunnery - ing (I don't know what the right word there is), since they make a point of saying that the population is mostly older and they don't have a lot of younger persons of the cloth.
I saw that a couple days ago and feel like there has to be something else to this. An up to 10% weight loss is acceptable isn't it? I can't remember the acceptable number of wet/dirty diapers though. I mean, it's completely heartbreaking either way.

I was also thinking this is awful and terrible that it happened. The baby was within the safe guidelines for weight loss, wets, and dirties. What they said about cluster feeding is true. I'm just wondering if it was one of those things where they met the medical guidelines but for this baby those guidelines were not protective enough. I think they said 1 wet and 1 dirty on day 1. And not much more required for day 2. I remember my first pooped a ton and lost like 8% weight. We supplemented anyway but he was considered normal.
I have 2 new employees working on the unit today. One came up to me to tell me I had dirt on my forehead. I told her it was the Sign of the Cross for Ash Wed. Way to criticize your boss on day 2 of employment.

While they may not be very bright, at least you know they will tell you if you have toilet paper on your shoe or something.

I thought the same thing. From the info given in the article, there's nothing that would raise a red flag. Dd did not pee, that we know of, in the hospital. It was a big deal and they did an ultrasound of her kidneys and a catheter. They got cloudy urine out with the cath, so we did get sent home with a 2 day appt to check weight, jaundice, and follow up on the pee situation. I don't remember exactly, but I think she was right on the line if acceptable weight loss - ds was about 8%.
I would think with 3 wet diapers on day 2 they were thinking ok, he's getting something, and seems not dehydrated.
Sad story for sure, and maybe the hospital staff missed something, but from the info in the article I don't see why they would have suggested supplementing if she were a mom who really wanted to bf and they are a pro-bf hospital.
This story is heartbreaking. I wonder if there is more to the story. I think articles like these cause panic in a lot more people than it helps because it doesn't point out any red flags to look for. Most of the article described what could be normal newborn behavior and this scenario is so unlikely to happen under normal circumstances, baby friendly hospital or not.

Yeah they do say it's unlikely and honestly I never kept track of what the diaper numbers and stuff were or what we even had because I FF from the start. Just thought it was interesting that it came up after we had talked about it. They should have added something in there as to what to look for to show signs of problems.

Dh just got a call from one of the jobs that he applied to. He has an interview on Friday morning, but it probably won't actually turn into a job offer. The guy said that they are looking for someone with electrical experience, and Dh doesn't have any. BUT the guys likes his background, and still wants to interview with him in case none of the other people work out or they have something I'm the future.
We are possibly one step closer to moving back home!

Yeah. This to me either scares people away from BF or makes them completely discount her story because it doesn't add up. That many wets and dirties but no one was measuring input- just time nursed. A weight feed would have been good but this happened so quickly. We were told to go back at 1 week for a weight check and appt but this baby had basically a heart attack at day 3. Idk that anything would have prevented this tragedy. I wish it could have been prevented but I'm not sure how.
I took DS to the pedi for his follow up and thankfully he's all better. But when I was there, they had me make an appointment for his 3 year check up. Um, how do I have an almost 3 year old??
