FIL sent this automobile building kit to DS and it has been a huge hit. It say 3 years and up, but it definitely requires a lot of supervision to actually build the cars. I will tell DS the next part I need and where to put it and he will do it. We played with it for hours the day it came.
For DD's birthday we are getting a swing set installed in the backyard. Family members have actually given money towards it for various occasions since her 1st birthday and we finally saved enough money. I'm excited because DH is going to put in rubber edging around it with enough room to put DD's playhouse and sandbox also so we'll have a nice play space back there. Between her kid party and family party, she'll get tons of other gifts to open.
DD is into all things baby. She has beds and strollers and baby carriers. She also has a bigger toy kitchen that she'll cook for them with and wash their clothes (has washer and dryer on one side). For her birthday I think we're getting her an outdoor play house. DH was going to build one but Sams club has a really nice wooden one for $300 so I've convinced DH to go that route. No idea what I'll suggest for others yet.
We got DS a train set for Christmas and he plays with it all the time with his Thomas wooden railway trains. Right now it's hard to get him to play with much else. He does like puzzles and still drives his cozy coupe all over the house.
For his birthday, we might possible get him a power wheel but it's still being debated... I don't want it to ruin him wanting to ride his bike because he absolutely loves that.

Why are these kids so old?
DS is obsessed with Magnatiles and tiny Angry Bird figures. He's also really into dinosaur toys and his tiny trampoline that's now in the living room til spring.

My DS asks for the Sam's club play house every time we're there!
Let's see Clara likes books, puzzles, her tea set, magnitiles, Lincoln logs, mr potato heads, drawing with her Spirograph Jr, drawing / coloring, play doh, painting, her castle, and pretend play with "guys" (stuffed animals and baby doll). I am really not sure yet what to get her for her birthday. She has a water table, mini pool, trike that we will turn into an actual bike trike thing, so a helmet.
DD loves coloring, drawing on her easel, puzzles, putting pennies in her piggy banks, the water table, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, her tool set and play doh. Some of the Melissa and Doug toys we have keep her entertained for quite awhile too: reusable stickers, cutting fruit set, magnetic car loader.
She really enjoyed playing with a toy shopping cart at our friend's house over the weekend, so maybe we'll get her that for her birthday.
I'm wondering whether to get DS a train table or a more generic activity table that he'd get more use out of and then get a board so we can use it as a train table when he wants to, kind of like this:
