That exciting about starting solids sophiegrace. Our appointment is Friday so we might try something this weekend if she says it's OK. I want H to be around for all his first tries. But as exciting it is to start, I'm not ready for all the added stuff. We still haven't made room for his cups, bowls and everything else.

Sorry about the crappy naps today dashook! It's strange - DS2 is a better nighttime sleeper than DS1 but a way worse napper. Will only nap if being held or in the car (in each of these scenarios usually an hour plus) otherwise if I set him down I'm lucky to get 10-15 minutes. I had to wear him so much to keep up with DS1 on maternity leave I attribute it to that. Such a bummer. ClassyMrsA - you are braver than me! I haven't attempted the grocery store with two yet! Wine all around!
AFM - started back to work yesterday. It is strange to be back and I have a shit ton to catch up on because they didn't hire anyone to cover my leave. Thanks guys.
sophiegrace he got the hep B for sure. I can't remember if there were any else. Maybe one other? Just looking at his summary sheet from today he got the:
Pediarx- dTap, IPV, hep b Rotarix (oral) Prevnar 13 (pneumococcal) Hib hboc 4 dose schedule (he gets this at 2,4,6 and 12 month).
Ahh, ok. She gets her third hep B at six months and her HiB is in the big combo shot. Pentacel I think it's called. I wonder what makes the pedis choose how they're going to do it. How's J feeling? This time is night and day from our two month. She's not phased in the slightest.
DH is in a better mood, I made delicious homemade chili, and the wine I bought is super yummy. I highly recommend it. I might have a 2nd glass after Lilah goes to bed.

Glad to hear it waitwhat! He mentioned teething when I was there three weeks ago with the fever. Her gums are so swollen and the drool is out of control. I'm not ready for teeth!
I'm going to look out for that white ClassyMrsA! I'm glad your H got out of his funk. I hate when that happens and then I spend the day wondering what his mood is going to be like when he gets home.
Well. We're already on our first wake up of the night. I didn't even get to pour my first glass of wine yet.
LTs for commiseration. We got hit with the gas monster tonight and it's been waking her up every 20 minutes or so. So so so much gas. I've given up and am just hanging out in my room with her now. FX the night gets better for both of us. I hope H is ok. He's usually a super sleeper, isn't he?

Yes, usually he is! I offer that as a sign of hope for everyone struggling with sleep on the reg. He was about as bad as they come until about 7 months and has been amazing ever since. I hope M lets you get some sleep tonight!!

These are my feelings too. I think it's going to be a ton of fun at first and then kind of be a PITA. At least I have a good push to get the pantry reorganized again. Do you think you'll do cereal or go straight to fruits and veggies?
That was me two weekends ago. It was the only reason I didn't completely lose my cool. Rough nights always suck, but rough nights following a rough day make me feel like a house is falling on my chest.

I asked about skipping cereal completely and going straight to purées. My pedi recommended doing cereal once a day because by 6 months the iron that they receive in utero starts to deplete and cereal helps to restore that along with other vitamins. This is for breastfeeding. I'm not sure about formula but I think because that has iron maybe it's different? Totally your call on what you start with! I just wanted to let you know because I asked this and wanted to share!
That makes so much sense. I am breastfeeding so she's not getting iron fortified formula. But the Pedi told me that he really didn't care what we did at what order, but to get through as many fruits and veggies as possible so that we hit the high allergen stuff hard as soon as she turns six months. Sooo...shit. Tinier portions of both cereal and a f/v? She has to get her iron somehow...
Re: solids. Just throwing in my anecdote about feeding them to DS.
Every baby is different and at 4 months I did not feel he was anywhere near ready for solids. He was not close to sitting unassisted, still had a major tongue thrust reflex, did not have a pincer grip, etc. But at his 4 month appointment his pedi said to me "he can start rice cereal now because he's 4 months" without any further explanation or asking me any questions about his development. So I would just say to trust your instincts and make the decision that is best for your baby. They can, but don't *have* to, have cereal at 4 months or as a first food.
With DS I ended up starting with whole food purees (his first was very finely mashed avocado about a week and a half before he turned 6 months) and we actually added cereal (oatmeal, not rice) later, as it was an easy breakfast to pack him for daycare (I would stir applesauce and cinnamon into it). We'll probably do something very similar with D.
dashook I 100% agree with all of that. And he did mention food after checking all her reflexes including how she took her oral vaccine, so I wonder if he suggests food depending on what he sees in the baby? Who knows. Can any of this be just black and white instead of a massively giant shade of gray?
waitwhat my Pedi told us that some people like to do color groups, some like to do all veggies then fruit, and others like to rotate between v/f. So I asked which is the right things to do and he shrugged and said whatever we feel like doing as long as we stay relaxed and have fun doing it. His relaxed attitude is a fantastic balance against my anxiety and he always has research to back himself up, but sometimes I wish he was a smidgen more rigid.

I'm not sure. I might do cereal first just to see if he actually eats then start adding in some veggies over the next few days.
It definitely seems like there is no set way to do it. I read some articles about adding a veggie with the cereal and doing that for a few days straight before going to the next fruit or veg. Just to give it enough time to see if there's a reaction before switching. I need to do more reading and try to find a plan that I like.
Why are we even talking about food and solids? Big kids eat solids! I swear it was only two seconds ago that this baby was born. It's all going too fast.

Feels. I'm having them this week.
because it DOES go super fast. And I hate it. Speaking of which, we should probably think about first birthday party themes 😂
But in all seriousness, J is probably my last baby and I'm in so much denial that he's already 4 months.
Is it bad that I already started thinking about his first birthday party? He is a Halloween baby but I don't want every birthday to be Halloween so I might do Monster's Inc for the first.
goldenlove3 that's a cute idea! And trust me, I've already looked for the potential dates that we can do his first birthday. Knowing he's born so close to Halloween I wanted to make sure we had a date that wouldn't be a conflict with Halloween and Halloween parties.
I have a Pinterest board already. That's how I saw the monster's Inc and I thought it was really cute.
It's probably easiest to look it up goldenlove3, but the quick description is starting with foods in their whole natural state and following baby's lead starting at 6 months. No purées, no spoon feeding. Put cut or cooked food out and let them chew on whatever they want. No pressure. It is very much "food before one is just for fun" as they don't ingest much for a few months. They believe all necessary nutrition comes from breast milk or formula until 1. But buyer beware, you have to be comfortable with risk for choking and how to do back blows etc. O coughed a bunch but never needed back blows or anything.

hangry I really wanted to do BLW, but with all the wide ranging food allergies in our family we need her to actually ingest foods to get on top of any sensitivities asap. I'm hoping to do what danib did with C with FX that we have some success.
sophiegrace Starting solids is exciting, but also annoying. I think in general drs give the go ahead to start solids at 4 months. We gave Lillian some cereal at 4 months but she wasn't into it. Then we gave her banana on Easter right before she turned 6 months and she cried. In terms of motor skills she was ready, but she wasn't interested despite lunging at my food/grabbing at it. Generally speaking, I tend to lean towards waiting. For you, I'd probably say to go ahead because the research on food allergies says it's best to start introducing those before 6 months to reduce the risk of the child developing them. I wish it was more black and white, too. If it makes you feel any better, the research I've read indicates that there isn't much difference in health and development in babies who start at 4 vs 6 (aside from the aforementioned allergies for at risk kids). Oh, and eventually we all get here:
goldenlove3 I had Lillian's 1st birthday planned very early. Like by 6 months. Lol. Her 2nd I planned pretty early, too. This next one I planned pretty much before she was born. I had my 3rd birthday at a little kid amusement park with pony rides and toddler sized rides that is about 15 minutes from our house. So I decided to have Lillian's 3rd birthday there, too. It'll be My Little Pony themed.
