My kid got kicked out of preschool

Well, we've been struggling the last few months with Cade in his private preschool. He didn't seem to have any issues before winter break, but as soon as winter break ended we started having issues. He'd cry and have meltdown over silly things, like when they were learning about Penguins he'd cry all day for their giant stuffed penguin Pete. I thought once they got through that unit he'd be fine. Apparently not. We got his diagnosis in January and since then it seems like he's gotten worse at school, or that the school is more aware of his issues. I don't know. Either way the owner said his last day was this last Thursday and he's no longer going to preschool. Which sucks, we loved this preschool for my daughter. They were so good for her.

Now I'm having issues figuring out what to do. We're trying to get him into the special ASD preschool run by the school district, but that won't happen until next school year. In the mean time I guess we'll just pray for private speech and OT to start back up again? That doesn't cover his social issues, just his speech and OT ones. I don;t know, I'm just so defeated by this. I can;t figure out if its him and it wasn't the right place for him, or if the school just saw an ASD diagnosis and decided not to bother anymore. Any suggestions on what I could do for him in the mean time? Thank you.

Well that sucks. My gut reaction is that your son didn't change with a formal diagnosis, the school did. But if that's the case you don't want him there anyway. Sorry nana.

I'm so sorry. BTDT. I doubt your son changed but the school dynamics may have. It's a terrible feeling. Don't give up.

Oh man I'm sorry. I agree I doubt your son changed that much. The school changed with the diagnosis.

I'm sorry. BT and it sucks. On the one hand, yeah, you don't want your kid somewhere that they're not being appreciated and supported, but at the same time, it makes things so much harder to find alternative arrangements and deal with the emotions about all of this, too.

Assuming your child is school aged (3-21 under IDEA), have to started the process to have him evaluated yet?

If he's been evaluated by the LEA and given an educational ASD dx, they should find a preschool spot for him and/or offer an IEP with services scheduled. Not all district do preschool, some offer services at the local elementary for preschoolers or dually enrolled elementary aged kiddos. Even if you can't get a class placement, OT and SLT should be offered.

Social skills can be incorporated into speech services, but TBH, for a preschooler addressing dysfunctional behaviors is a priority because he needs to be available to access the social skills training. Mere exposure to peers isn't enough at this age, especially if behavior is challenging.

I'm sorry this is happening to you nana. The only advice the I can give you is the if you want to try it on private school again talk to the director if they allow to have the ABA therapy at school. That's what I'm doing for my kid, he has an aid ( ABA) with him, they help him not just to incorporate and participate in class but as well to help to socialize with his classmates.

Hugs. This sucks! I saw this happen to a kid we know. The school system took him within a month.

We're in the process (more like the waiting list) for eval from our school district. My hope is that we can get him into the autism specialty preschool the district runs.
