Hey friends! We welcomed #2 last week. Our pediatrician told us no major changes 3 months before or after, so we dutifully got him a big boy room in November/December. He loves it, but won't sleep in there quite yet. While we won't need the crib for a few months, I had a surprise c section and can't lift him in our out of crib. We will have to transition the crib to toddler bed and go from there. Any pointers?

Don't tell him he can get out. Some kids don't realize they can at first. So just say nothing about it until he does it.
Get the OK to Wake clock. Set the wake time and nap timer. Tell him to call you when it turns green. Works fantastically.
We just moved DD2 on Tuesday. She gets a B so far. No issues at nap but the occasional wee hours of the morning roam.
Sorry about the surprise c/s. Here's hoping for an easy recovery. Pro-tip: get a belly binder if you don't already have one. I ran several feet with a 26 lb. toddler in my arms at 3 weeks post c/s because I had to catch my preschooler...the binder made it a non-issue.

I am worried about this issue as well. We decided not to transition..he is just turning two in April (I'm having my c-section April 21st). He's also really small and has never tried to get out of crib. Baby will sleep in our room anyway for a while, in the PNP or RNP...then we will transition to big boy toddler bed. (I totally want to get a car bed for him!).

I'll second a lot of what gratefulgirl said. OMG the OK to Wake clock is worth every penny!
What stage of potty training are you in right now? If he's allowed/you need him to be able to get out of bed and go potty, you may want a second one for his room. Or practice going to the bathroom from his room then getting back to bed. J had to be able to go to the bathroom at night, so we had to practice that.
Also, maybe put a folded blanket on the floor next to his bed for a little while. Even with the toddler rail, J fell out a few times onto hardwood floors.
Get some cool bedding or sheets to help excite him about his new bed. It helped J and she loved sleeping in her Ariel bed LOL Target and Amazon have some inexpensive sets.
Good luck with the recovery. Support bands help a lot.

Congrats on baby #2, and I hope you're all doing well!
We transitioned to the toddler bed a month ago, because DH insisted. I was really worried about it, but it has gone well. Like @boxerific, we placed a doorknob cover on the inside of his door so he can't break out. When he wakes up, he happily reads books or plays in his room (sometimes quietly; sometimes not so quietly).
The big thing that changed is that he now wants to bring 100 things to bed with him (mostly books, plus a few animals), and we have indulged that for the most part.

Thank you for your advice and well wishes, ladies!!! We put the crib mattress in the floor of big boy room for a nap and he never got off of it, but didn't sleep either. He would not do it at bedtime or for nap the next day.
We were worried about transitioning to toddler bed for nap and him refusing it at night. Evenings are already hard enough and we just don't have the energy or patience right now to deal with it. A+ parenting right?
The solution is a shiny new 3 step stool and a tiny chair inside his crib so I can guide his climbing in and out. Maybe we will just get Ikea crib for the new one to put in the guest room with me.
